Reenactors headed to 150th anniversary of Battle of Gettysburg
For two men who know they'll be on the losing side of a gun battle this weekend, Ron Crawley and Ed Harrelson are pretty optimistic.
They've waited years for this. And in a horse corral outside Crawley's home in Inman on Tuesday, the men looked themselves up and down in preparation for their more than 500-mile trek on Thursday.
Harrelson, of Tryon, N.C., is a Hendersonville, N.C.-based lawyer. Crawley is an IT project manager. But this weekend, they are privates in the Confederate Army – more specifically, the 2nd Virginia Cavalry.
The men will be among roughly 12,000 reenactors at the 150th Gettysburg Anniversary National Civil War Battle Reenactment, a four-day spectacle that highlights a year of anniversary-related events at one of the nation's most well-known battlefields.
Harrelson and his horse, Sadie, and Crawley and his horse, Calhoun, will be among a 400-troop cavalry, according to organizers. They'll be joined by 135 full-size cannon and watched by between 60,000 and 90,000 spectators during the four days.

I've always loved reenactments, shame the only one near me is a small little battle that probably is not even in a history book.
My cousin is going to that, hope he does alright in that heat.
I've always wanted to go one of these sometime, would be interesting to watch.
Reenactments are always sweet
Two of my friends are reenacting for the North, I was invited but I just don't have the money for the uniform.
My friend is going to this.

They're a lot of fun to watch, and to participate. I would recommend talking to some of the guys that reenact, you can really learn a lot!
I do WW2 reenacting and can confirm it is fun as tits
WW2 reenactor here also. :)
Everyone knows the real battle was the battle of Shrute Farms.

A good friend of mine is a WWII reenactor. He does German Artillery, what do you do? I'm personally planing on going into WWI reenacting.
Re-enactments sound fun, its like a less gay version of larping.

I dunno, US History would have been a lot less boring if the Civil War had wizards and dragons.

Me too! Russian infantry, 2nd Guards Rifles Division.

82nd Airborne but I am trying to start up a RKKA unit.
If you're in to this sort of thing, watch the movie Gettysburg. A lot of the extras were Civil War reenactors, who worked with the production team to help ensure accuracy. On top of that it's actually filmed in Gettysburg. The movie is 4 hours long but it's really fucking good.
Civil War reenactor. I'll be joining this march soon and participating this weekend. I do Northern Virginia infantry in the Confederacy. I'm actually on guard at a local reenacment now. We'll start the real battle tomorrow. Tonight is just skirmishes and scouts.
I also do 42nd Gordon Highlanders in Napoleonic and WWI and German 13th infantry in WWI and occasionally WWII.
huh, if i had to pick any war to re-enact though itd have to be ww1, trench warfare+hand to hand bludgeoning ftw!, though the 200th aniversury of the battle of lake erie is comming up in a few months and i think they are actually putting a battle on this year, thatll be sweet to watch

Gettysburg has been floating around on YouTube for the last few months in case anybody wants to see it:

(This isn't the actual extended version; the version I went to see when it was released in 1993 was like 6 hours long.)
It's too bad that after what happened with Gods and Generals, nobody was interested in making the Killer Angels anymore.
I want to reenact, but I don't know any places around here, or it's difficult to find.
California anyone?
I got airsoft quality fun but I never tried reenactments
I want to show up as Master Chief.
Its hard to believe that 150 years ago the United States almost murdered itself.
and get beat up

Every August or so there's a reenacment in Huntington Beach.

I wasn't even a year old when that movie came out.

There's no mention of a version of Gettysburg on IMDB that's 6 hours long. The extended version is 271 minutes.
Gettysburg did have an intermission in it though, so did Gods and Generals (which I saw in 2003.)

It was actually initially going to be a TCM miniseries that ran for two or three nights. When they were filming, they realized that they had something special and made it into a theatrical release.
