Well, It's not so much what he did, but what he did and said in the entirety of the movie. I believe that this character was not only a person, but an embodiment of America, circa Vietnam era. He was patriotic, brave, and willing to die (even though he didn't get to) for his men. And in the end, he really found spiritual and mental cleansing. He found his peace with god. That's why he really should be the all-american character.
