Israeli lobby to Congress: Make Israel aid exempt from sequestration and budget cuts
At a time when sequestration is about to take a big bite out of the Pentagon budget, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) will be sending thousands of its citizen lobbyists to Capitol Hill next week to make sure Israel is exempted from any spending cuts.
This could prove a very risky strategy at a time when millions of Americans will be feeling the bite of the sequestration debacle, from the defense budget to the school lunch program.
But not aid to Israel, which will be untouched if AIPAC gets its way.
The Pentagon is already requesting $400 million to buy Israel Iron Dome batteries. The Iron Dome is an Israeli project, the US is literally buying weapons from an Israeli company FOR Israel. Despite making cuts to the school lunch program, defense, (fully cut) military college tuition assistance and the secretary of defense cutting his salary, the Israeli lobby believes that gratuitous aid to Israel is a necessity, and should be prioritized above all those things first.
Aid to Israel should have been the first thing to go...
This resolution could easily backfire and damage Israel far more than any cuts in its very generous grant aid program.
My expectation.
The 13,000 expected AIPAC activists will be telling Congress not to touch Israel's $3-billion-plus annual security assistance and to vote for legislation declaring the Jewish state a "major strategic ally."
This should be cut instead of the programs the tax payers are benefiting from. Israel can defend itself.
"We are more important than your citizens"
I've never really understood why the US sends so much aid to Israel. They're doing just fine and they don't need it at all.

Apparently it's political suicide not to support them.

There's a powerful lobby and tons of Evangelical Christians support them because of the whole "chosen people" thing.

Because they're our foothold in the Middle East. Also because it's political and PR suicide not to bend over backwards for the Jews. 'Muh Holocaust!' and all that.
We shouldn't be supporting them due their flagrant disregard of human rights and constant killing of Palestinians for the heinous crime of trying to resettle in the that was taken from them. We've intervened in other countries for less, but we continue to overlook all of Israel's transgressions just because they're Israel.
Apparently it's political suicide not to support them.
There's definitly a sionist lobby pressuring governments.
Let them rot, we already supporting enough murderers.
Oh ffs Israel. Will you just implode in on yourself already you piece of shit.
Even if they were the nicest country ever and the whole Palestinian thing didn't exist there is still no reason to be giving them this much money.
Apparently it's political suicide not to support them.
yup, because our government along with Israel has managed to brainwash the dumbs into believing it's american and the right thing to do to support Israel, and if you talk bad about Israel you're un american and a terrorist
Why should we exempt them from sequestration cuts again?

I'm sorry but we have our own shit to worry about.
No. Fuck off Israel and deal with your shit yourselves. This is the point where the child says 'goodbye mom and dad' and heads off into the wide world on his own.
Israel receives a nice sum form the US that goes to other areas besides its defense, so they have a vested interest in maintaining the support at all costs. It helps that there are some pretty strong lobbying groups to this end, I doubt that there'll ever be much traction on targeting these programs. If anything we'll be lucky to prevent an expansion of them considering events in the Middle-East.
The US has an interest in pursuing this too though. Israel government has been more or less consistent in pursuing common regional policy for the Middle-East.
The money being sent to Israel isn't as bad as you think. The US Government gives free money to nations around the world all the time, it's just you hear about Israel the most because they're constantly in the news.
Since the US Dollar is so prolific, many places in the world accept it in addition to their own currency. But the thing is that once this money goes abroad, it almost never comes back to the US and is effectively removed from the US economy. This effect is called Seniorage, and it's a good thing to have. By removing dollars from the monetary system, you make the remaining dollars more valuable.
While some of the money sent to Israel is used to buy US goods, most of it stays in Israel and trickles down into the local economy for services rendered and materials.
While I don't think we should be contributing to a zionist nation, the free money is hurting our economy less than you think.
This is beginning to piss me off greatly because I'm certain it will pass. Israel is a parasite the size of Jersey and it's sucking us dry. Nothing can be done about it because complaining or talking about it in real-life is a taboo.
How ironic that only 100 years ago, almost everybody hated the Jewish for no good reason, and now almost everybody seems to love Israel for no good reason.
Hitler was right.
Why does Israel get aid again?
Why does Israel get aid again?
There's dozens of countries that get aid from the US. Israel just gets singled out because no one likes Israel.

Fair enough, but why?
Fair enough, but why?
Lobby groups tell Congressman that their employer nation is poor and sad so Congress gives taxpayer money to foreign countries out of sympathy and a secured future job as a lobbyist.
And there's about 3 pro-Israel lobbies in the US, all of which are rather large and organized as much as the NRA.

Maybe the no good reason is the little speed bump in Jew population growth known as "the holocaust" but idk.
Anyway, I think Israel should be helped if it was attacked - I mean, sure their government is dicks and the way they treat the Palestinians is fucking atrocious, but they're still a lot more liberal than the surrounding nations.

Israel has shown themselves to be militarily superior to all of their neighbors (at times, all combined) several times over.
They don't need our help to protect themselves.

Not right now, no, but if shit went down I'd rather see Israel get out on top than Iran (ignoring their geological position somewhat) or something.

why israel over iran? both are states of terror. one just plays sorta nice with the americans.
Why can't they support themselves?
