Im looking for a Barrett 50 cal air soft gun, I saw the Socom gear one but its fps isn't great, it's about the same as my m4. the SMGF one is spring and too expensive and the VFC is discontinued. =( Is there more still out there?
Socom Gear has a gearbox doesn't it? Just upgrade it or the wait for the new one i guess.
I believe there is the bolt action M99 out there for under $200. There's some stores in China that are selling them right now. Evike Pre-Order http://www.airsoftpost.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_48&products_id=31338 As for the Socom Gear, all you have to do is drop in a new spring and some reinforced parts to make it shoot harder. That or pick up one of those insanely pricey Systema complete gearboxes.
how would I upgrade it once I buy it? does the gearbox have to come from the same manufacturer? or The same gun model? Where do they sell them?
You must be pretty new if you don't know that, but I'll help you out. 1. To upgrade the gun it will require you to take it apart and remove the gearbox. After removing the gearbox you need to remove the screws on the gearbox and split it in half, being careful about the spring that will want to shoot out. This site has a video that shows you how to do a spring change on a Version 2 gearbox, same as the one you'll find in the Socom Gear M82. http://www.mechbox.com/mechbox/v2-mechbox-spring-upgrade.html 2. Any version 2 gearbox will work from any manufacturer, but you'll need to decide if you need one wired to the front or rear of the gun. I don't know how the M82 is wired, so you'd have to do some research. The Version gearbox is used in M4's, MP5's, G3's, SCAR, and a few other guns, so it's pretty popular. 3. Just about any airsoft store should sell them, though I recommend high quality gearboxes. Unfortunately, that means they'll be $100 up to $300 or higher. You can do that, or buy the parts and install them in your current gearbox. Honestly, don't bother upgrading a gun as soon as you get it. Play with it for a few months, then decide what's really needed. And FPS isn't everything. I got by using a 380 fps JG BAR 10 for a year and it was a great sniping weapon. No amazing FPS, but accuracy was all I needed for it. And if you ever get around to upgrading it, since it will be your first time, I'd STRONGLY recommend letting a shop do it for you. I didn't upgrade my own guns til I had at least 2 extra AEG's I could use in case I screwed up.
Have you seen the airsoft M82 on pictures/videos, in detail? I watched one from ASGI, and he pointed out the 6mm barrel inside the big ass M82-barrel, and it hasn't been secured in any way to prevent vibrations. Apparently, some users have reported it being incredibly inaccurate, even for being so huge! Don't get me wrong, it's a radical airsoft gun. It looks awesome in every way, but for that price it should have a performance thereafter.. There might be a way to fix that though, some sort of home made device to secure that barrel. You better dig around and see if you find anything about just that before spending that kind of money!

Isn't the SOCOM one discontinued? Anyways, they're releasing another one soon, but in limited quantities, like 100
The limited quantity is just to begin with, to see if they are getting the responses they want for continued production.
ok there is a place called "Airsoft Extreme" near where I live so I might be able to get it upgraded there. anyone know when are the new models ones coming out? this was gonna be a potential Christmas present lol cool site with some Barrett themed stuff http://www.airsoft-barrett.fw.hu/ they are just kits tho
Airsoft Extreme should be more than able to upgrade a Ver.2 gearbox. The Santa Clara store is near me so I go there for most of my parts, and upgrades and fixes if I'm too lazy to do them myself.
