Cancel your New Year’s Eve festivities, Saudi religious police warn
Saudi Arabia's religious authorities have warned would-be revelers against celebrating New Year's Eve in the predominantly Sunni Muslim kingdom of 30 million people, local media report.
The warning was delivered by the Commission of the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (CPVPV), the government agency that employs "religious police" or Mutawa to enforce Sharia Law inside the Islamic nation.
The CPVPV based its warning on a religious edict handed down from the elite committee of Saudi clerics that forbids such celebrations, the local Okaz daily reported.
Saudi Arabia follows the Muslim lunar calendar, unlike all other Gulf states that use the Gregorian calendar.
While on patrol, the Mutawa enforce a number of rules, which include checking that women wear the abaya, a black, robe-like dress, enforcing the no-driving rule for females, and ensuring that drugs are not being traded.
The religious police also forbid the sale of red roses and gifts for Valentine's Day on February 14.
In November, Mutawa arrested two men in the capital of Riyadh for offering free hugs. Reportedly, the police reacted to the complaints of local families and individuals about the men's actions. The two had to sign a pledge that they would not offer free hugs ever again.
I just woke up and all I read was "Sunni Mushroom Kingdom" and I was thinking "is there a Muslim Bowser now?"
God I am so fucking glad I don't have to live in Saudi Arabia.

Your princess is in another Palace
Surrounded by 30 Ferraris

No, your princess is at the top of the highest tower, only you have to get there from the dungeons first.
:v:
But seriously, is it worth it to keep forbidding even the fun things in life with religion as an excuse? bleh.

If it was a ministry it'd sound even more like it's out of 1984.

Another firm but fair punishment handed down by the no fun police.

A lot of religions seem to have banning a lot of things arbitrarily or telling you that enjoying sins is a sin and you're going to whatever variation of hell the religion happens to have as core principles.

You'd be surprised at how many things can send you to hell for eternity in Hinduism. If you find yourself asleep during the 'sacred' hours of dawn or dusk, not only do you go to hell, but you also wind up being born an outcaste or beggar in your next life apparently. Don't get me started on the sale of ginger or cows, much less praying before you consume anything made of milk (or milk itself.)
I was born into this religion, and half the shit spoken of in our scriptures makes no sense to poor old me either.
No fun allowed.

Afghanistan used to have one, closely modeled after Saudi's Mutaween and run by the Taliban. The term commission is somewhat only used because it's not a full fledged department per se, but rather a division of one of the larger religion oriented ones, like those in charge of organizing Hajj and such.
That having been said, them issuing this isn't out of the ordinary and most expats living in "American compounds" or "British compounds" (to which the Mutaween tend to turn a blind eye unless shit really hits the fan) should be just fine and able to party it up without a problem. This shit usually only tends to be enforced on Indian, Sri Lankan, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Filipino migrant workers apart from the local populace (who are also, to an extent, able to get away with it).

fuck man now I have to pay for my hugs again
Oh, and to add on something else, we also have the world's most obvious get out of hell free card in any religion whatsoever: All you have to do is utter the name of God, to wit, Narayana (one of the many names of the Preserver, Vishnu) just as you're going to die, and all your sins get burned up, even if you were the world's biggest asshole while you were alive.
I'm pretty sure no other religion's got that kind of get out of jail free card, far as I know.

Holy shit, Hinduism is even worse than Christianity. At least Christians have to repent.

Just curiosity, how you know that?

Know what? That Christians have to repent? Am I wrong about that?

No regarding to Hinduism, that's all.
