Freeview launches free mobile TV app for Australia
Ever since Australians started getting TV streaming on demand, it's fair to say we've started to expect more from media across the board. But until now, free-to-air TV hasn't quite met the task.
That could change today with the arrival of the Freeview FV app, which lets you stream every digital free-to-air TV channel to your mobile, for free.
The app was announced in October and has been put together by Freeview, the industry body that wrangles all Australia's broadcasters together to get them to play nice for the sake of Australian viewers. Freeview brought them together for the splashy launch of digital TV, and for the decidedly more fragmented launch of Hybrid Broadband television (HbbTV), which it dubbed Freeview Plus.
The idea behind the Freeview app is an easy sell -- it's regular TV, streamed straight to your phone.
I've already tried it out with ABC News, and it works pretty well. This is pretty significant considering that, until now, you could only watch the content on each of the networks (ABC, SBS, 7, 9, Ten etc) through their own apps, and generally the content was on-demand reruns rather than live TV.
And unlike what I've heard about American free-to-air TV, Freeview in Australia has enough content to rival cable networks - in fact pretty much the only paid-TV competitor is Foxtel, which is getting destroyed by online streaming services like Netflix. This won't help.
There are some other features - and some catches - in the article.
Problem I see is data caps and or internet connection.
We know that straya is still being fucked by crappy copper and now crappy nbn/fibre/fttn.
I'm assuming there's quality options on the app cause forcing 1080p content down a connection that can barely open up youtube would fucking suck.
Still neat though and that's something I would expect to see in NZ too since we have Freeview but most of the main channels on Freeview already do that sorta thing themselves.
Yeah there are quality options available. But gosh our Internet isn't that bad haha.
It's convenient because now I don't need ABC iview, SBS On Demand and all of those other apps. I can get by with just the one app now. It's actually a hell of a good deal.

I'll have you know that if it wasn't for data caps the 4G would actually be usable, it's like 3x faster than our broadband even with 1 bar.
ok now you're just bragging
Gave it a go, not really surprised it's got a 2.3/5 on the play store, it's pretty shit.

A bunch of channels just aren't available and the quality is just as shit as we get on TV (I think we have like 1 or 2 channels broadcasting in 1080i, mostly SD and some 720i).

Sits on the first blob for 30 seconds before going to the muddy mess afterwards. Looks worse than YouTube 720p let alone 1080p.

So yeah, it's the authentic Australian TV experience. No problem streaming it on our internet because it looks fucking awful. Also doesn't hide the notification bar for some reason.
they didnt make it proper full screen? what a joke lmao

There's something wrong with your device, not the app.
And of course there will be bars on the top and bottom. It's viewing a 16:9 video on a 4:3 screen.
