I never watched any of the Robocop sequels. Guess i'll check out Robocop 2 and stay away from 3.
Robocop one just came on Netflix, I forgot how insanely good it is. I'm also a little shocked my parents let me watch it when I was a kid. I do fear massively for the new Robocop. I hope they've at least tried to make a good film even if it isn't true to the original
You know, I only saw Robocop when I was waaaaaaaaaaay too damn young to watch Robocop and I barely remember it... I remember enough to get pissed off by the remake, but I still should watch it again some time.
Literally just watched Robocop for the first time yesterday.
I was pretty interested by their discussion of how it could be a good remake, because I definitely think the new Robocop could be good. If you just take the basic idea of "cop become robot, very satiric" and make it about modern culture, it could work. There's lots to satirise. It could work, for sure. I just don't think it will.

Also love interest because they always have to fucking do that.

Closest thing to a love interest is his wife and kid. It's actually an OK film but but don't expect a scene for scene remake. The best way to think about it is that it takes the center of Robocop and builds around it completely different. IMO the second best film with the name Robocop attached. The best way to improve it though would be to up the rating, even though they do try and push the limits of a PG-13, and to fix its rather weak ending.
The new Robocop completely misses the point of the original IMO, and I haven't seen anything that looks like it's trying to send its own message. I mean he gets killed* by a fucking car bomb in the remake. In the original Murphy's death was horrible, they were torturing him and deliberately shooting off pieces of his body. There was just so many subtle things in the original, scenes which depict how horrible the world had become, the corruption of the government and companies, the fear of regular people. Robocop shoots a rapist in the dick, that's not going to happen in the remake. *Also he doesn't even fucking die in the remake, and he has that stupid human hand that just makes him look like a guy in a suit. Robocop 2 and 3 were fucking terrible. Literally made for kids.
And he dies from a propane tank heat blast car bomb. [editline]14th February 2014[/editline] Robocop 2 was fucking darker than the first one, how could you say it was for children?
This is a pretty big spoiler but [sp]Murphy is literally a pair of lungs, a head and his hand that they salvaged. [/sp] The film doesn't try and aim to be the original Robocop or make the same points, which IMO would of been redundant and made this into an even more pointless remake, it instead takes the central idea of RoboCop and builds a completely different story around it. Don't think of it as a remake, think of it as a reboot.

It's teetering on the fence so much it evidently lost sight of what it wanted to become in the first place.
The robocop remake/reboot/rethinking/reblazzle is just completely unnecessary because the original movie was pretty much a product of its time. If you do it exactly the same as the original one, it's completely unnecessary. If you do it too different, it makes no sense to make it part of the same license anymore. And if you miss the point of the original (in the case of Robocop, the fact it's satire and that Murphy is supposed to be this really slow, inefficient piece of shit), then it's just a generic shitty movie.
I'm wondering, what is their reasoning to keep the human hand?
It's for PR purposes because it's literally a human hand pulling the trigger and makes him seem "human" to the media and civilians.
Still ignores the bit in the original where the soulless corporation gets rid of his perfectly good arm Also the first trailer says you're wrong about that spoiler. [sp]Looks like he's burned and missing an arm and a leg but is mostly intact other than that...[/sp]
It wont because they aren't going to think that deeply into it and it's going to be pew pow pew pew and that's it.
We're lucky if it's going to be pew pew pew even. Guys in the vid brought up Total Recall, remember that movie and the remake? There's like 100% less pew pew in the remake.

[sp]He has 4th degree burns all over his body and like I said only use those parts and again get rid of anything else that could be useful.[/sp]
