what program are you using?
Google sketchup for 3d modeling and Keyshot 2 for rendering
i am having a hard time seeing that being made in sketchup
i am having a hard time seeing that being made in sketchup
Why? It's very blocky, and that's what sketchup is best at.
It can be done.

you should check out Illsteirs creations he is far more skilled then I and he does everything in sketchup
http://illsteir.deviantart.com/
PS yes I know allot of thing turn out blocky sketchup in my opinion can be the easiest yet hardest 3d modeling program. Sketchup is not as bad as it seems though allot of people always say it makes blockey 3d but if you look at illsteirs art you can see that that isnt true you just have to have an immense ammount of patience in which I dont have.
To put in retrospect
Illsteir = 4-9 months to make a model
me = 1-5 months to make a model.
Half a year for one model? You guys really need to switch to a modeling app.
Oh, you have proven me wrong, thats pretty amazing.
Half a year for one model? You guys really need to switch to a modeling app.
most of the time its that we take breaks. I know for one I am a hobbyist modeler so I only do it on my free time I can safely say the same for Illsteir anyway if you get the wrong idea of how fast I can model here my progress on my model from the last time I posted.

Have you made anything else than gundam in sketchup?
yeah of course LOL most is lost to time though I have a habit of cleaning up my photo bucket every blue moon

Allot of this stuff is old though I mostly do gundams now a-day its the most fun to model.
you really should switch to a 3d modeling app, you get much more control then you'd have with google sketchup i think.
made allot of progress today, imma stop cause I gotta go play pool with some friends heres a render of whats made so far,
the legs aren't small they just seem that way.

I really like the art here, nice work

this x 10000000
sketchup seems cool and easy for someone who hasn't used professional apps, but after using 3dsmax for a long time, using sketchup now consists of me getting fustrated and then ragequitting.
Remember that sketchup was created for the sole purpose of creating buildings for Google Earth. There's no reason to stay with it if you've got the talent.
no its just I like sketchup allot more its easier and the other programs frustrate me. Also like I said I do this as a hobby and sketchup is more then good enough for me, I believe there is allot more to this program then meets the eye.
There is proof in my claim heres some perfect examples

Sketchup in my opinion is technique oriented if that makes any sense at all.
Heres an update of that GM I am working on, its much more interesting now that there is more detail. I pretty much refined everything to make it seem more thin while keeping the original look.

sorry to necro this thread, I felt obligated to update it one last time. The models I cant update anymore because I had to reformat my computer, I placed them on an external hard rive and windows EFS system went nuts, it encrypted it and now I cant get in <.< so someday ill have to crack it open but that doesn't look like anytime soon.

I remember this thread
(since you lost your work it's never a better time to learn a better program)
well at the moment, I don't honestly need to. I am producing AAA work now and might join a team working on a Cry-engine game. One of which I cannot talk about unfortunately. I do on the other hand use Deep exploration, and 3ds max with my work to enhance it later on in its development stage.
but wouldn't it be cleaner to work with max from the start
I would say yes if I didn't understand the way 3ds worked but I have to now say no. I have kinda my own thing down. I actually have to say its cleaner this way. Actually, most of the time "the mod im working on now for GTA" my dev team gives me mesh to overview in sketchup before they start UV mapping it, and that's because creases and folded edges, etc is much easier to find and fix. We produce some pretty amazing things. ACTUALLY now that I think about it, if im correct isnt Mech warrior online useing sketchup for a few things?
Sketchup isn't actually a terrible 3d modeling program, allot of the plugins help allot and in all honesty, if they would add features like animation and proper UV mapping naively with sketchup id say its just as powerful as 3ds. Sketchup is just misunderstood to the people who don't actually look at what it can do rather then what most people have developed with it, just because its different doesn't mean is bad.
Here is some examples made PURELY in sketchup "by other people"

nobody's saying sketchup can't be used to make great work (i recall that old really cool boat model), just that it's objectively inferior to other apps. since you're so strongly for keeping it in your workflow even with the knowledge of other tools I'm pretty curious about a few things. what's your process? could you outline some of your reasons for sticking to this workflow? in what ways do you find it better or easier to use?
I've never seen what the best a person can do in the program as incentive to use it. Both Blender and 3ds Max are used to make movie quality models but does that mean you should just choose the program that has the best looking model?
Sounds like the "drawing with a mouse" or using MS Paint argument
I think the bottom line really is that if you want to work for people for money, you should get to grips with the more efficient alternatives since nobody will pay extra because the result was achieved in a more laborious and difficult way than was necessary. The opposite in fact, they'll probably just hire someone who will produce things for them in a fraction of the time.
And for personal reasons you should absolutely be seeking a less time-consuming way, making something over 9 months is insane unless it's a life-changing masterpiece
Its not like that at all, the bulk of that 3d model was made in a day, I just never had time to get around to finishing it, I only worked on it every other month.
