Does that site work if you have prescription lenses?

Doesn't seem to work for me. I just see a blank white page

Works for me. Maybe you need new glasses.

Doesn't it seem likely that the reason they are able to sell glasses so cheap is that they, too, are Luxotica?
The important part about glasses are the lenses, the frames are just a fashion statement.
I'm thinking if you can just get the lenses from your optometrist you could scan your head and make your own frames in 3D software and then print them out for $50

After you gain access to a multi-hundred dollar 3d printer.
when people talk about evil shady special interest groups trying to fuck over the average jon, they tend to picture the illuminati or the zionists or fifa
but in reality it's effective monopolies like these that jack up the prices on everything and most people don't even know it

yeah, in reality it's just corporate mega-conglomerates. a 100% legal entity that we interact with on a daily basis

Multiple scanning apps exist for mobile devices, with free to cheap licenses. I only suggest scanning to get better measurements for your head, but you can always do measurements by hand.
I learned how to do 3D modelling in Google Sketchup which is free.
3D Hubs lets you send files to people who have printers, and they will print out your object and mail it to you. I made a ring for my friend, and got two copies printed for $10 after shipping.

3D printing isn't exactly cheap but its affordable if you need basic replacement parts or simple customization on some items. A pair of frames would cost about $50 for the materials, but you can customize them any way you like and it beats paying $300 for designer frames.

I haven't heard of that service yet. Sounds pretty useful. I had an idea for a business similar to that but never went through with it. Maybe I should've :v:

Shit that site would of helped me immensely when I broke part of my headset. I hard to layer on so much plastic to "fix" it.

"Even the most basic pair of glasses can cost around $400"
...Where? Unless you're specifically buying a brand name, pretty high end glasses are around half that. Or is this just because America?

That's what confused me too. Basic prescription glasses go for as low as 40$ here.

I could be wrong but I looked before I posted and I attempted to find a link between that company and Luxottica. I could not find any.
Even if that's true I'm still getting a better deal. I have an unusually high prescription so the average pair of glasses there runs me like ~$75-90 after I get all the special lenses. (My eyes are so bad I require special high-index lenses to cut down on chromatic aberration and to avoid having literal coke bottles on my face.) In store that's like ~$200-300 for the cheapest pairs.
For a more average prescription you're looking at like ~$50-$75 a pair.

Same here, they refuse to use such lenses on the cheaper frames.

Nope

Simply put, probably 1% or less of the "basic pair of glasses" costs $400. If that. The video is a bit overblown in that regard. For the majority of people needing glasses below 40 with simple myopia/hyperopia, you're not going to be spending near that much, even if you were uninsured. As a personal anecdote, my glasses would be $80 uninsured (includes a few extra things like anti-glare), and $0 with insurance (and its not eyemed vision care). Walmart is actually a pretty good bet if you have a simple prescription since they do a pretty good job and their glasses are cheap. Funnily enough the ophthalmologist I worked with would include Walmart in his suggestions to patients if they asked for suggestions. A cursory glance seems to price most glasses at below $100.
The price starts going up when they get more complicated, stuff like progressives lenses, trifocals, etc. can hit the mid hundred dollars without insurance. I definitely heard older patients before complain about the price of their glasses. I don't have any concrete comparisons other than my mom's glasses, and those are $40 progressives (with insurance). Without it I think they'd be in the $100 range, but not more than $200.
Overall they exaggerate things slightly in the video, but its good to know that there is a large conglomerate operating behind the scenes so you can sort of keep track of what's going on when you're shopping and comparing glasses. Next time I get a pair of glasses I'll be paying more attention to the brand. Also didn't know they owned Eyemed, which is the most morally questionable thing that I got out of the video.
