Hello Facebros,
My name is McNab and I have been diagnosed with clinical depression about 1.2 years ago.
This thread is about everything related to depression, in this thread we talk about how we feel, what medicines we take, what the medicine does, tips on how to cope, tips on how to get help, where to go, who to talk to and so on.
I felt that I needed to create this thread because I actually see a lot of admitted cases on facepunch but none of them receiving help.
Be a nice guy, if you see someone with a problem then tell them what they should do.
Assholes are not allowed, be a dick and no doubt a box storm shall rain upon thee.

Don't worry, be happy.
Also here are some FAQ for you crazy kids out there:
Q: I'm having trouble sleeping, i usually just stay up untill the wee hours of the morning!
A: Try sleeping on your couch, sleep anywhere that isn't your bed. This has been shown to work very well, and then when you return to your bed the next night (or one night later) you'll fall to sleep a lot easier.
Q: I lost my job/my girlfriend broke up with me and now I'm sad. Am I depressed?
A: Medical science would say no, so something horrible happened in your life, you're sad, it's only natural that you would be upset. Even something as bad as a death is consolable over time, so try not to worry.
Q: Will medicine cure my sadness?
A: Medicine can do a lot of things, but no medicine can cure you. It's a team effort between the chemical reactions the medicine gives you and your brain's ability to process such information. TL;DR You need to make an attempt at feeling better, dont leave it all up to the meds.
Q: I become sad quite often, am I depressed?
A: Not necessarily.
Q: How do I get help? (school age)
A: Talk to your school's guidance counselor for outside assistance if it's amazingly bad.
Q: How do I get help? (adult)
A: This is not as simple, you may talk to people you know (friends, family, workmates) about it, and if your friends can't help you then you should seek professional assistance from a hospital.
Q: Would anybody care if I died right now?
A: I would.
I was on prozac for 2 and a half years and it turned me emotionally numb.
I should list me meds
Zolaft: Tablet that gives you laser vision and the personality of a stone.
You're super focused all the time and emotionally incapable.
Getting own3d by n00bs in COD? Take a zolaft and you'll be one of the top player I guarantee it.
Conserta: ADD pill that gives you an amazing hand-eye coordination.
Conserta is used for concentration and because of this, helps you draw better.
Life is good. You just have to find a way to enjoy it.
I do not have problems with depression specifically anymore due to taking a medication called Lexapro, but I do appear to be encountering a very related issue.
I am often having trouble getting something done or finishing a certain task (even if it is voluntary) due to me often having ridiculous amounts of apathy, lack of energy, and lack of motivation.
It cannot really be labeled as me being depressed, but rather as me being detached from reality and as a result getting endlessly less things done then I could have otherwise.
I was wondering whether anyone else in this thread has a similar problem, whether anyone has any suggestions on how to solve this incredibly destructive and persistent state, and whether anyone is taking any specific medication in this area.
If anyone would like to discuss this through other means of communication, PM me, I would endlessly appreciate any help from anyone. It is not a medical emergency, but the sooner I solve it, the better, this peculiar condition has been chasing me for atleast 3 years now, possibly due to chemical changes in my organism.
Weed is the best anti depressant I've ever used. I normally take Zoloft, but it's really hard for me to relax. When I feel like I can't relax, I hit up. My grades have been going up since.

I would highly appreciate if you told us a few more details about it, does it make you more productive overall? Does it also make you more productive voluntary activity wise?
Weed helps with my depression too, much more than any SSRI ever did.
Hi. I have Asperger's and OCD and I struggle with depression regularly. I'm okay right now, but last year I was really down, mentally suicidal but not far enough to actually do it. I'm on 300mg of fluvoxamine (luvox or movox, branded).
I'm happy to chat about things here.

I must say, 300mg certainly appears to be a rather large amount of medication compared to most andi depressants not exceeding 10-20 mg.
I'm ready! Promotion! I'm ready! Promotion!
I'm ready... depression... I'm ready... depression...

I'm really just kidding, sorry. I'm a very happy person and I think I'd hate to be depressed. When I get sad, I get usually get really sad, but there's always someone there to pull me out of it.
Any OTC drugs i can get that can help treat depression, or at least keep me more focused? Any side effects that mean that i would have a lack of emotion is fine, i'm a quiet person anyway. Thanks in advance.

Lots of depression requires lots of pills.
Lots of depression requires lots of pills.
So, it is actually a large quantity of pills as opposed to you injecting the whole thing through some type of a single shot?

3 x 100mg pills.
3 x 100mg pills.
Are they capsules or tablets?

Tablets. Wikipedia has an image of them.

Severe Clinical Depression
----------------
Seeing as I recently pulled out of this alive, let me share some stuff:
1)I took Zoloft for about 6 months in 100mg form, once a day.
BADS
-Nausea for first 3 days of taking the pills. Going on and off of them caused alot of nausea and vomiting. Taking 50mg for the first few days instead helped curtail nausea.
-Inability to achieve orgasm at start of dosages. Was able to achieve orgasm after first week of dosages. Aside from this, sexual drive was untouched for me.
-Some slight inability to feel excessively powerful emotions. MAY have been placebo.
-Still was depressed in some ways, HOWEVER the most alarming problems like anxiety and suicidaliy were significantly reduced.
GOODS
-Less compulsion and worrying. Kept anxiety at bay. No more hour long anxiety attacks in Math class. Most anxieties left the moment they arrived.
-Perkier mood. More "positive" mental energy kept me going better.
-Unintrusive, looks like an allergy or stomach pill.
2) I did counselling with a family counsellor. The environment was a small room with couches, a TV, carpet and generally a very relaxed atmosphere. The counsellor did a great job of making the room more like a living room instead of an office. Feeling relaxed and comfortable helps bring out problems you want to expose.
GOODS
-Was cheap, insurance covered it.
-Had found a someone I can be openly expressive to.
-Saying something aloud to a listening person and hearing their take on things does WONDERS for your problems. Alot of strange/pointless things that worried me or made me depressed lost their crediblity when I said them aloud.
-Works amazing in lieu of medication.
BADS
-It is only as effective as you let it be! Some people with severe depression go to counselling and say it didn't work for them. Then they say they resisted talking! Find someone you are COMFORTABLE with, and learn that you have to spill the beans. They are there to help you, not judge you. You will not benefit unless you are willing to talk.
-Unlike pills, this is incredibly easy to put off and cancel appointments to. Try not to miss appointments.
3)I had friends help me.
While you do not have to let your friends know you are depressed, doing anything with a group of friends is great. Hang out with buddies who have DIFFERENT enterainment interests than you. I found my evenings ok playing on the computer. I never thought going to the movies and going to do teenage-like things would be fun. Try to do things outside your comfort level that are reasonable. Basically, you want to get off the computer and have dinner/movies with friends. No matter what you do or dont do, try to hang out with people. Most depressed people shy away from peers. DONT DO THIS! Try getting yourself exposed to new people and friends more than you normally would. I was slowly beginning to drop my depressive attitudes and outlooks as I hung out with non-depressed and outgoing friends.
This paragraph in a sentence: Hang out with people in real life, not over the internet. Try out new things with new people. This had helped me get over alot of my depression, when combined with the two other methods above.
Currently:
-Not on anti-depressants
-No more counselling
-Actively going to places with friends and going to school sports games.
-Still getting "better", but leaps and bounds better than 3 years ago.
I was prescribed Xanax for apparently being in depression.
Too bad the doctors had no idea what was actually going on, so instead of acting as anti depressant, it had a reversed effect on me.
I've been pretty depressed several times in my life. Generally when things aren't moving forward and I just feel stuck.
Lately It's been worse then ever. I graduated from college nearly eight months ago and have been unable to find work. My parents have been slowly getting deeper and deeper in debt because their business is not doing so well and I feel the fact I am not being able to help and have no way to give back is terrible.
I have been thinking a lot about suicide so that they would have less of a burden but have not done it because I still have hope I'll find a job, though unemployment in my area is around 17% and I have no transportation for an out of town commute.
Any suggestions?
I've never been formally diagnosed, but I struggle with depression every now and then. Suicidal feelings and general sadness is basically depression, yes?
information about Zoloft
That is very interesting. Counseling is not necessarily effective for me from the perspective of actually solving things, not to say that I do not enjoy talking to my psychologist.
Unfortunately getting help from friends is not really an option to me, because I really do not have any real life ones or online ones that live close enough for me to get to them without having to travel to a different state, or a different part of the world.
Could you describe which Zoloft related effects you experienced in the area of productivity and overall motivation?
Genkaz, what kind of counseling did you have? If thats not a personal question, some work better than others.
Music helps a lot in my opinion, listen to an anthem that sounds positive, it could make you feel a bit better for a while at least. Katy perry's firework never fails to make me smile :)

I usually always listen to music that I actually enjoy and which triggers positive emotions, I have not been focusing too much on finding the worst possible music for my mental well being, thankfully.
What types of counseling are there if we were to list a few types? My type of counseling consists of sitting down with a psychologist for 50 minutes and discussing virtually anything I want with him.
The three main ones that I've been taught are person centred, CBT and psychodynamic. I don't know much about the last two because I went down the person centred route. What that is, is you sit down with someone talk about anything and if the person listening will ask a lot of open questions to get you to talk more, focusing on one specific issue if there is one, and then they will ask what you think you could do to find a solution to the problem if there is one.
They will never tell you what to do or give advice, but the other two do. Which I think is better, it's about helping the client to help themselves.
I got over depression, after being so for about a year and a half.
I can say it's all down to poor life decisions and lazyness, you bring it on yourself.
Glad I fixed my life.
I would love nothing more then to shoot up a bowl to see what that does to me.
Only problem is that I got no way of buying it.
I have the money I just need a source.

Not necessarily, you cannot really bring a gene triggered chemical imbalance on yourself.
In my viewpoint there are two commonly identified sources of depression, having the possibility of being combined:
1. External source like the one you mentioned, a depression that is actually created by an action or something otherwise independent from your actual organism functions.
2. Internal source or something similar to what I am dealing with, which is a completely out of nowhere destructive state.

That is another good question by the way, how in the world do you actually find trustworthy suppliers? Perhaps it is possible to purchase seeds somewhere to grow your own for personal consumption privately?
