Microsoft is planning to hold a special press event on September 30 to show off Windows 9, The Verge is reporting, citing people who claim to have knowledge of the company's plans. The date is currently "tentative," according to the report. It's not yet clear whether Windows 9 will actually be known as Windows 9. The operating system is currently code-named Windows Threshold, though it's highly likely that Microsoft will keep its numbering scheme with the next platform. Last week, CNET sister site ZDNet reported that Microsoft is planning to launch a "technology preview" of Threshold at the end of September or early October. The report from Mary Jo Foley indicated that users would be able to try out the operating system, but would need to have software updates automatically downloaded to the platform each month. Whenever Threshold makes an appearance, it's expected to come with a wide range of improvements, including a "mini" Smart Menu, separate windows for Metro-style applications running on the desktop, and support for virtual desktops. According to The Verge's sources, Microsoft will be showcasing some of those improvements and new features at the event on September 30. The operating system should launch as a beta preview soon thereafter. In a statement to CNET, Microsoft was succinct in its response to the news, saying only that it has "nothing to share" at this point.
$50 it's a pile of shit. Microsoft has demonstrated time and time again that they have no interest in their customer base, what makes anything different this time?
Fingers crossed: here's to hoping it will have the performance of windows 8, and the desktop interface suitable for... well desktops. Microsoft should know that not everything is a tablet yet.
Apparently Windows 7 was my idea, I've still not gotten anything back from that and untill I do I'll stick with what I've got in the mean time.

Start menu, virtual desktops, no more fullscreen metro apps, removal of the charms bar, seems to be an update that'll be worth it.
No it's more like a tick tock cycle of MS getting overly confident and then coming back to the consumers wants
According to the windows cycle the next one is going to be killer :v:
Start menu, virtual desktops, no more fullscreen metro apps, removal of the charms bar, seems to be an update that'll be worth it.
I agree. I think Windows 8 is great just for the performance boost, but there's a lot of shit like that I don't think anybody really uses that clutters things up. It's easily ignored, but there's no reason for it in the first place.
Tablets and Desktops require different levels of precision. Unifying that doesn't make sense because I don't need big buttons or UIs that dominate the whole screen to pop up on my monitor. I think they understand that now and hopefully they'll learn to keep those standards separate.
$50 it's a pile of shit. I wonder if this release will have a desktop interface that's any good. At least everyone else who stole from Xerox added some new features.
That's my birthday :v:
No it's more like a tick tock cycle of MS getting overly confident and then coming back to the consumers wants
5 replies and already a 'windows cycle' post nice
8.1 is p good.
$50 it's a pile of shit. Microsoft has demonstrated time and time again that they have no interest in their customer base, what makes anything different this time?
I would say Microsoft listens to their customer base quite well. It is a very large company, so it can be slow to implement certain things. Plus, the way Satya Nadella is planning Microsoft I think is very good. He is really refreshing Microsoft. I work at Microsoft and I am excited for the future. Also, I think people made to big a deal out of windows 8 start menu. I rather enjoy it. I can group up my programs that aren't important enough to be on the desktop or taskbar, yet still have quick access to. I basically think of it as fences but nicer, the thing I hate about how people are is that they get the mindset from what people tell them, and what they hear. So they are just "no, I don't want to try windows 8 because it sucks" yet they haven't really even given it a proper chance.
I've been using 8.1 for about a year now, and so far it's the best version of Windows I've ever used.
I think windows 8.1 is a great OS where everything is just a little cleaner because I can launch things from metro and search (window key + s). Opening the start for one tiny bar to search things in is a waste of space. I think the best balance is to keep windows 8 search and do a start menu without it.

bring back athlon support pl0x
Start menu, virtual desktops, no more fullscreen metro apps, removal of the charms bar, seems to be an update that'll be worth it.
Virtual desktops are finally being shipped with Windows? Awesome, they've been quite helpful on my Linux based laptop as the screen is fairly small for lots of work.
bring back athlon support pl0x
Wait what?
my personal experience with windows 8.1 has been mostly great. not only is there a start menu and all, I actually like it better than the windows 7 start menu since you can right click for a bunch of regularly used admin options: I've even gotten used to the whole corner-clicking window-switching shenanigans which I do have to admit I thought was retarded to begin with (along with the whole app-focused UI and everything), but overall doesn't negatively affect productivity. the desktop is fundamentally the same, the tools are fundamentally the same, everything that matters is still there. I hope windows 9 is good [editline]22nd August 2014[/editline] the only thing that seriously vexes me is the skype app, which is hopelessly defective and lacks basic functionality such as getting chat noises to shut the fuck up (do not disturb is not a thing any more)

No Video overlay when I switch to a program? Fuck that.
Hope they continue their good > bad > good > bad pattern.
Hope they continue their good > bad > good > bad pattern.
Well Windows 8 was pretty bad when I tried it during the beta, but I'm on 8.1 and it's pretty good. Maybe Windows 9 will be bad.
Hope they continue their good > bad > good > bad pattern.
My god there is no pattern stop saying this.

hopefully this iteration can be not shit with high resolution monitors
