So recently the internet in the college dorms here at Algonquin have sucked ass. And I mean terrible, terrible ass. Suddenly Monday just came around last week and decided to shit on our bandwidth. Usually problems like this just disappear in an evening or over a day. This time it stuck around all week, so I decided to actually report the problem. Essentially, connecting to sites is entirely easy. Maintaining any kind of streaming connection results in some of the laggiest, slowest bullshit I have ever seen. Youtube became unusable overnight. Porn is a hopeless cause now. Not a single internet game of mine can connect to a server without giving me 3,500 ping (Despite the fact that before connecting, it pings perfectly at 100~ or whatever have you). This is what they told me;
"Work Done :
Playing online games in RES will result in the internet speed being throttled. Clients are recommended to get Rogers Cable Internet if client wants to use internet connection for more than academic purposes. (GUNAYDU 02/04/2010 4:25:41 PM)"
What.
WHAT?
$5,500 for two semesters, and they can't even give us decent fucking internet? Also, I'm sorry, but throttling? When did my college move to Soviet Russia? And I thought it was illegal or something. Excuse me for coming back to my room at the end of eight hours of theory and wanting to unwind a little, thats just entirely heartless and insane of me. Real students just study after studying and then study some more and maybe eat somewhere inbetween that, of course.
Taking, no joking, recommendations on how to pursue this legally. I graduate in two months but if the college honestly thinks they can just continue doing this even after I'm gone then fuck them right up their goddamn ignorant asses. I've never heard of someone being able to keep their chins high and their head up their ass at the same time but Algonquin College's ITS has done it.
Make a thread about it.
Steal some stuff from the other dorms to make your dorm a party place.
You know what to do :ninja:

They want you to use their internet for school shit and say to get your own internet for anything else, I don't see anything wrong with that.

Did not read one sentence of the OP.
Also sorry to hear the connection is shit, mine at home usually is too. I hope your legal pursuits work out though.
I guess the legality depends on what was originally advertised in the description of the housing plan

It's a college, not a internet cafe. They don't want hundreds of people using up their bandwidth on games, piracy and porn. You pay 5.5k for two semesters of college/education not internet usage. Got a problem with it, go buy cable or something - it would be more reliable anyway.
accommodating up to 1,050 students. The furnished suites include telephone service, high-speed Internet access, cable TV, utilities and light housekeeping
Obviously its not specifying "high-speed non-throttled internet so you can watch porn and game on", but at the same time, what? I'd also love to know what motivated them to make this change when they're already facing a teacher's strike.

Actually the 5.5k is specifically for the living. I still pay food separately and my education separately as well. I'm paying 5.5k for this room and the shitty internet it once provided.
Oh poor you? $5,500? My college was rated as the best unwired campus by intel in America because our ENTIRE campus is completely wireless. You can access the internet from every inch of campus...
However, this doesn't mean the internet is any good.
The internet connection is great but they throttle it all down for all users. Each connection gets like 2/1 down/up.
How much do we pay?
I think I pay something like $8,500 a semester and we can't even get decent internet.
College isn't obligated to provide you with internet.
Grow up and deal with it.

Yeah, it definitely seems greasy of them to advertise "high speed" internet if they're going to do that and I would complain to a higher power.

If you're paying for it, then yes, they obviously are

They are when they mention they will be, then decide "nah fuck that" halfway through a semester, and therefore a contract.
They are when they mention they will be, then decide "nah fuck that" halfway through a semester, and therefore a contract.
They aren't obligated to provide it for personal use though unless that's specifically stated.
Your college is a shithole because it doesn't have decent internet?

I pay $400 a semester for community college and live at home. :colbert:
At least you can afford to go to a school that expensive. Talk to an admin about it, maybe they can do something.
What about paying for a 25Mbit connection from Rogers and you and some friends could chip in on the cost each month and share it via wireless? Depending on how many people you're willing to share it with you might only pay like $10 a month for it.
My common room doesn't have enough chairs for everyone. Beat that.
My common room doesn't have enough chairs for everyone. Beat that.
Neither does mine we had to steal chairs from other rooms and just make a massive chair-pile in our "party dorm".
Yeah well we have resorted to fighting over tables for seating and the bastards on the other side of the room have stolen our sodding bin. Everyone has gone native!
And to top that you have a so called "party dorm" we have a broken football table and toilet without doors that lock.

Community college is a joke why even bother going
In soviet russia (or rather XUSSR) we have unthrottled unlimited connections we can download large volumes of warez through. Well, it's throttled because they use ethernet cables in buildings, which limits it to 100 mbps
Internet at McGill is amazing. I download at a constant 6.2 megabytes a second.

At least you had doors.
I pay $33,000 a year for tuition here, and something like $6,000 for housing. Last time, my internet was down for four days straight.
Quit yer bitchin'.

Find the right people, and you might be able to sort out your little internet problem.
They aren't obligated to provide it for personal use though unless that's specifically stated.
This is right, if yuo go and read what the contract actually says, it says the network usage is for ACADEMIC PURPOSES ONLY.
Which means that for looking up databases and other online information it is perfectly fine.
So if you complain that you can't use it for personal use they will just point that out.
