Just finished watching it a while ago, I agree with almost James had to say, except for the discussion of beat 'em ups, he only showed streets of rage 1. That one is HORRIBLE compared to Streets of Rage 2. Which in my opinion still stands as one of the best beat 'em ups ever. I loved watching him compare and play these games though, brought me back to my grade school years of playing super metroid and having myself be scared shitless. Good times man. Good times
buy both
why did i have to be born so late with all stuff like this it just seems like i missed all the fun
I was born during the 16-bit era, but I never had one of the consoles myself. I did play a PC port of Sonic 3 quite a lot though, so I'm a little biased towards the Genesis. Though nothing can beat Final Fantasy VI in my eyes.
I Thought the genesis had some sort of MIDI sound processor that made it sound better than the snes? Or is that just me?
why did i have to be born so late with all stuff like this it just seems like i missed all the fun
You're a hedgehog, how do you play video games?
why did i have to be born so late with all stuff like this it just seems like i missed all the fun
Every generation has the same kind of fighting over consoles, the later you're born the better - that just means there's more generations of games to play with of course. Plus, with emulators you can play the games you had with wayyyyy nicer controls, I fucking loved my N64 but god damn what were they thinking :v:
Best ending monologue.
Sega Genesis is totally worth it if you get a Sega CD. It's awesome. Star Wars? Tomcat Alley? Fuck Yeah
fuck man i had no idea link to the past was his favorite game its mine too

Hell, even small bits of my memory of playing a Mega Drive make me think that.
Sega Genesis is totally worth it if you get a Sega CD. It's awesome. Star Wars? Tomcat Alley? Fuck Yeah
i have one its awesome even though it cost me $70 to get a working one
It's just that whenever I hear anybody talk about it, hell, even small bits of my own memory of playing on a Mega Drive, it seems that they had way more fun with their old stuff than I ever did with my modern games.
Part of it is just an attitude of a generation. To quote Louis CK, "if we had jetpacks people would be going around saying 'wow my jetpack is the shittiest jetpack who's your jetpack provider?'". I loved my games as a kid, and still do... although there's a lot more games I've tried now that seem to be more boring than fun (WoW was the worst example, I've never been so bored by a game in my life) The one thing I feel like I really did miss out on was the sword quest events - I can't even believe Atari attempted that, with such massive giants as Microsoft and Sony in gaming these days you'd think they'd have the power to do that, but no such thing has happened for my generation really (unless you count the massive amount of dough you can make playing some games competitively)

Overall, the snes had more music that was better though.

I think part of the glory is that the games really required inventiveness on the players part, you know, imagination and stuff. Now a-days, everything is rendered in big sparkly 3D HD graphics and stuff. Plus back then people weren't afraid to experiment and try new things.
On backwards compatibility, Game Gear games and Master System games practically weren't any different. The hardware was almost the exact same minus the resolution. You'd be better off with the MS games than the GG ones. Graphics - The SNES may of had a Super FX chip, but look at those frame rates. 32X wins this one. Sound - Thanks to the SNES running on samples, everything sounds more muffled to compress it enough just to work. The Genesis, as we all know, runs on FM technology, though tinnier-sounding and not as capable as samples, Genesis makes it there. He's also not displaying music from Nigel Mansell's racing game for the Genesis. Games - Genesis games, especially at first, were based on older SEGA titles, like Altered Beast and Flicky. Super NES games were more intended for the home, following its predecessor's footsteps. Both do have their gems, but again, Genesis wins. SNES wins in RPGS though. Phantasy Star 2 and 3 both suck compared to the first and fourth ones. "Final Fantasy 3/6 is the best..." STOP THERE! I keep on about FF5! Why must FF5 be so over-looked? Super Mario RPG; also a Square collab. Geno is trademark of Square-Enix. Action 52 for the Genesis is also more complete and much better than the NES one, which crashes. Not bad. I'm calling Nintendo bias here.

I don't like how he just dismissed the sports games like that. NHL 93 is one of the most addicting games I have ever played.
Does anyone know what the spiderman game was at 9:31? I remember it from my childhood but I can't remember the name.
Does anyone know what the spiderman game was at 9:31? I remember it from my childhood but I can't remember the name.
Spider Man: Maximum Carnage
why did i have to be born so late with all stuff like this it just seems like i missed all the fun
I'm thirteen and own not only the consoles in this video but an Atari 2600 and Pong Machine among other consoles.
The first video game I ever played was Sonic 1 when I was 6, watching these brings back so many memories, but I have to say, the Snes did have better games, but I never owned a nes/snes, only sega until my dad accidentally stepped on it, but he bought me a Nintendo 64 and super smash when it came out to make up for it. But no matter what Nintendo makes, this shit always will be some of the best music I have seen in a video game.
why did i have to be born so late with all stuff like this it just seems like i missed all the fun
This, a thousand times this. I was born 2 years after wPlaystation 1 came out. I never really got into games until near the end of its life cycle, though I think I played SNES once or twice but I really don't remember any of it. I got into games about when the Xbox and PS1 came out. I didn't really get to play PC games till like 2004 I think. Might have been earlier though, but I know I certainly wasn't in it majorly till much later. I always feel kinda sad when I hear how a lot of people's favorite games were stuff from the 8 or 16 bit era or some thing from like the 90s that I never got to play. I somehow feel like the games I like a lot now are inferior, probably due to the problems in the industry currently and the elitism that some old gamers have. I mean I know it's all about preference, but it still bugs me.
Since some of you have been hit with nostalgia, I'll just drop a link to another thread in here: Emulation/Older Games Thread Go and relive some old memories. For those of you that haven't, its time to experience a very different era of gaming. Ontopic: Considering who he is, its not that surprising the SNES came out on top. Then again, Sega doesn't exactly have a very good track record, now does it?
"Final Fantasy 3/6 is the best..." STOP THERE! I keep on about FF5! Why must FF5 be so over-looked?
You mean the Final Fantasy 5 that was japan-only, not counting fan-translation rom hacks that he'd have to emulate (which James doesn't do typically), until its release on the Game Boy Advance? When most people do these kinds of comparisons, they typically do it using US games; as seen with the usage of Final Fantasy III. Kind of hard to bring up FF5 if you can't really buy it without importing it and probably wouldn't understand it anyway. Not to mention, you're kind of missing the point; it's his opinion, and he knows it. You don't quite have to make a bunch of counter-arguments for everything just because you think he's biased. And quite frankly, you're primarily Sega-biased. :v:
Jesus fuck I forgot how many Genesis games existed, and how many of them my parents bought for me. We had so goddamn many. All the Sonic games, Mortal Kombat, Contra, Phantasy Star, Flicky, Gauntlet, all the Golden Axe games, and so many more I forgot about until I saw this video. It's a shame I have no idea what my parents did with all of them, sold it I think. [editline]16th August 2012[/editline] Also, you all make me feel old as fuck saying you all grew up with Play Station 1 and stuff.
It's like AVGN just created the opposite video NC just released. Epic, serious, and even has a relevant crossover that is funny.

My first console was the SNES, which came with Donkey Kong Country. I still have the same SNES that I got back then, hopefully it's a lifetime companion.
