There's a reason my parents forced me to quit this shit. Broke two shins on two different occasions almost tore my ear off, fractured a collar bone, busted my knees wide open, fractured a cheek bone, broke two ribs, and on top of that this big fucker tried to crush my eyes into my skull.

I love this sport.
Worth pointing out that a lot of that footage is pretty old. You only get a few really big hits like that in a season and a full-on punch up like that is rare as fuck. It's not that brutal, but when you have big guys running really fast, they can often collide spectacularly.
You'd think they'd at least wear leather skullcap or [I]something[/I].

As someone paying attention to the US Football off-season talk, some guy just blew his chest out with a shotgun because of concussions he sustained while playing and he thought he was hearing voices. "Take note Americans". Sure, whatever. That shit in the video is insane and those guys are going to be in wheelchairs in 7 years shitting into bags. I'll take the pads because even with then people are still sustaining serious injury.

isn't the average life expectancy of NFL players something like 50-55 years? I can't imagine a sport like the AFL would be much better for their health

Not really, they get all the old players doing the commentary for the games, most of them are pretty damn old
You guys don't understand. If we had pads they'd just end up as homes for spiders. Then we'd be in even more trouble.
