John McCain: "We'll be the most militarized border since the fall of the Berlin Wall", after new imm
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said that an amendment to a US immigration bill would cause the US to have the “most militarized border” since the Berlin Wall came down in 1989.
A bipartisan amendment to the “Gang of Eight” immigration bill would double the number of Border Patrol agents from 20,000 to 40,000, fund construction of 700 miles of fencing along the US-Mexico border, and provide billions of dollars for advanced surveillance equipment.
Many Republican lawmakers have refused to support the immigration reform bill as it currently stands, arguing that it does little to enforce the border. The Senate advanced an amendment to the legislation with a 67-27 vote last Monday, winning significant support from Republican lawmakers and instilling hope that the immigration reform bill could make it through the upper chamber. But although the amendment would strengthen the border, it would also rival the security at the former Berlin Wall, McCain said in a CNN interview.
Jesus. Our borders are fine. There's no reason to heavily invest in this.

Will now have a harder time getting into the country.

yeah, sure, on the Canadian side maybe because like fuck Canadians give a damn enough to sneak into the country illegally. The Mexican border on the other hand is a mess.
Little by little, you can see the political environment and government policy making a huge shift in the USA - Just look at some of the headlines on this board.

To put it mildly, the majority of Canadians consider ourselves lucky to be up here and not down there.
Except for Israel and Korea and all these other fuck places.
Some of us Americans wish we could be up there instead of down here. The fact that both political parties in the us push the fear factor and backward ass policies so far is sickening.
You guys have a pretty shit border btw

What you don't see are the miles of motion detectors, remote controlled drones, and automatic cameras.
[sp] Don't forget the concealed popup autoturrets! We've got those too! Or will, anyways. At this rate.[/sp]

There's 1,000 anti-personnel mines in this photo.
See, now, comparing yourself to the Berlin Wall is bad. Being compared to the Berlin Wall should be an insult, and yet you're proud of it?
EDIT:
I might have misread it. Sorry 'bout that.

Uh... Pretty sure McCain's speaking against it.
i agree it should be strengthened, it's too easy for those filthy americans to sneak into mexico and steal all of our jobs
Facepunch's worst trait is not making shitty thread titles but believing anything statement anyone makes. In reality, our border is hardly militarized. I don't even understand why this is a problem, illegal immigrants are not supposed to be in the country so it is the government's job to prevent them from coming in. There are hardly ever cases of border patrol agents killing illegal immigrants and border patrol actively makes sure that illegal migrants that get lost are safely returned to their country. There are no mines on this border, there is no ordnance aimed at the border, the guards on the border. With more fencing and surveillance the situation will be curbed and only good can come.

immigrants come in illegally because it takes 15+ years to get into the country without knowing anyone, if you're even allowed in at all - most people don't have an extra decade of their lives to give away on a dime, much less on something that might not actually work.there's people attempting to cross the border using ridiculous hair-brained plans just because that's simply far, far easier than attempting to navigate the US immigration policy, and you're acting like this is somehow a good thing.

Now you're just spreading blatant misinformation. Almost nobody here seems to realize this but: getting US citizenship != getting into the US. Yeah, getting citizenship is a pretty lengthy process, it's supposed to be. Actual entry, work permits, etc are far easier to obtain, lawful permanent residency is also considerably quicker than citizenship and is almost the same.

"The legislation concerning beefed up border security removes any validity to the argument that border security is not sufficient," McCain said of the amendment, which was authored by Sens. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and John Hoeven (R-N.D.).
"I mean this is not only sufficient, it is well over-sufficient,” he added. “We'll be the most militarized border since the fall of the Berlin Wall. That's why I think this amendment was very important.
But is it meant to keep mexicans out, or americans in

"Important" doesn't mean "good."
I mean, heck, he might be in favor of the bill, but I'd be a bit surprised about it. McCain is generally a fair and level-headed guy, by Republican standards. It was his biggest criticism, during his electoral bid, that he was basically just a Democrat in red.
