EA community manager Sledgehammer 70 posted the news on the Star Wars Battlefront subreddit, saying that Battlefront will "utilize a new skill based matchmaking system" instead. The thread is full of disappointed players. The Battlefield games, and most shooters worth their salt, give players the option to join servers of their choosing. Server browsers give you greater control over the maps and modes you want to play, and can offer communities stable spots where they can meet and compete. The alternative, matchmaking, is a good way to quickly jump into a game, but is less likely to foster a community that will stick around on PC. Server browsers can be inconvenient for developers who want to see the user base spread across all of the available maps and modes. Servers give the community the ability to flock to a limited set of favoured maps, to the exclusion of all others. which can effectively kill maps that fall out of favour. Is this why DICE has decided to go with a matchmaking-only option, or is it because accessibility is more important to the wide-ranging audience that a Star Wars game is likely to attract?
Welp, and I thought having to use battlelog to browse servers was annoying as it was. Why can't EA just listen and learn for once?
I could sort of understand for consoles but for PC there's absolutely no reason to not have a server browser. I guess this means mods are out of the question too since there'd be no way to join modded servers deliberately.
Big mistake
skill based matchmaking system
Well that's just fucking laughable. Way to go, EA.
2009 all over again.

if you have maps that fall out of favor maybe you should design better maps
Watch them backpedal again in a few weeks/months when people get extremely perturbed at this. At this point I'm starting to believe they just say this stuff so they can later on say "we put it back in! See, we listen to our community!"
And another reason why you shouldn't buy this game. Matchmaking is one of the worst mechanics in video games.
Customers who paid good money caught trying to have fun by playing the most fun parts of the game. Those fucking monsters.
Unless beta is ridiculously fun, no server browser=no Battlefront for me. I remember how "fun" this kind of matchmaking was in Titanfall. Never again.
Here we go...
They never learn.
if you have maps that fall out of favor maybe you should design better maps
No, people just like certain maps over others. Nuketown is by far the most popular map in BO1 and BO2 but it's arguably one of the worst maps due to how small it is. CS:GO dust2 is the most popular by far. It's just popular, that's all.

It gives them the gaming experience they want. If it's the most popular map, we can assume the majority of players enjoy playing on it - so we can consider it to be good. Dust2 is popular because it's good, too. A four wildly different paths through the map, each favouring a different play style, each path with its own ambiance and atmosphere, and both sides of the map being pretty much perfectly balanced. Good is subjective, and you can't separate it from popularity.
Well that's just guaranteed me not buying it
Server browsers are fucking shit and unnecessary. Because what happens is you easily spend a lot of time waiting in a queue for a server because everyone else already goes to the populated servers, and no one goes to the empty servers with spare capacity. Matchmaking solves that, and it's just less of a pain.
When I complained about Battlefield 3 and 4 not even having a client and killing the process whenever it disconnected from the server, I was shouted down by people saying how great the new system was. And I'm sure everyone will find this new system good too. And in Battlefield 5 when you press the play button and it starts playing a Youtube video with kill notifications and flashy sound effects with no actual gameplay, I'm sure that too will be a revelation in gaming. True skill level equality. No online harassment. Just click the Play button and dominate everyone in your unique RNG-driven video entertainment experience.
utilize a new skill based matchmaking system
It will probably be like CS:GO with the ELO style ranking.. but, it doesn't make sense for such a slapstick game. You aren't buying a Star Wars title to be a comp game, but a game that you can get lost in.

Not to say having it embedded in the game wouldn't have been fine too, it just (to me) wasn't a big deal either way. Further, comparing having no server browser to having one in a web-based client, as opposed to embedded in the game, is a big leap.
Honestly it'd be better if players just have a choice. Battlelog could've been a convenient stat-tracking and alternate method of launching the game - not the only method for PC users, especially since you can't alter the settings unless you pull up Campaign and pause, or load up a match and then stand there. Now this is just streamlining to the point of pure absurdity.

Otherwise you spread all players so thin that all of that is lost. If you're so annoyed about queuing and would prefer matchmaking then choose a different sever... Seeing as you clearly don't care what server it's putting you into anyway.
Titanfall had matchmaking and we all know how many people are still playing it. Come on DICE.
Titanfall didn't fail because of matchmaking
It had (and still has) many issues but matchmaking was one of them.

At this point in time, I'm not super concerned about the removal of server browsing. I'd like to see the finished product and see if it really caused any issues. I find matchmaking easier because I don't like individually searching through servers to find the one I want to play on. Might be nice with matchmaking if they put server browsing traits into it. (Such as certain parameters for maps, players, etc...) Possibly even adding in a matchmaking option to search for maps with certain mods on it. So, I'll hold off on judgement until we see how it plays out. They still have some time to make the situation better without backpedaling if this is truly how they want to run it.
I don't see why everyone is so annoyed, I hate having a server browser in Online FPS because it allows people put the most silly restrictions/modifications on gameplay like "Certain weapons only/banned", "Fast XP" or only having certain maps. This means that it's so hard to find a server where people are just playing the vanilla game.
Im really, really looking forward to just after the honeymoon phase of this game wears off, I genuinely think it's going to be a trainwreck.
