New Leaked Info about Warcraft Movie: Will be based on Warcraft: Orcs Vs Humans, not WoW

We’ve spent the last few days putting together some puzzle pieces and working out just what’s going on with Duncan Jones‘ Warcraft movie.
Now, though, an image has come together of where the project is headed and it looks like Jones is planning a full-blooded fantasy movie, as much like John Millius’ Conan as The Lord of the Rings. This is definitely proper Sword and Sorcery stuff.
I’ve come to understand that the film’s story is not an adaptation of World of Warcraft, and instead takes place around the events of the first couple of Warcraft games, ‘real time strategy’ classics of the mid-90s. If nothing else, this will leave room for a series of subsequent films adapting the ongoing in-game narrative.

The lead character seems set to be Khadgar, a young consul to the Kirin Tor senate, rulers of the city of Dalaran. Early in the story, Khadgar is charged with investigating a series of crimes that have rocked the city, but as we go on, we’ll find that his mission leads him into a quest beyond the city walls.
Then there’s his mentor, Medivh, a mage and the sworn protector of mankind against demonkind. Johnny Depp was rumoured for a role almost as soon as the film was announced, and while I can’t find any substance to those rumours, at least not right now, I’m sure this would be the part he was up for. Not quite Gandalf meets Captain Jack Sparrow, he’s actually a more morally complex character than will be at first revealed. Expect him to be a scene stealer, too.
And set on a collision course with Medivh is Lothar, The Lion of Azeroth, leader of the King’s Army. He’s brave but maybe a touch too bold. In a straight down the middle version of the film, this might be the role The “Dwayne Johnson” Rock would go up for, though I’m imagining somebody like Mark Strong could carry just the right amount of pride and gravity.
And then there are the King and his Lady too, playing key supporting roles. Expect to see some well-loved actors in these parts.
I’ve got less of an idea of the specific Orc characters involved, but there’s definitely plenty of them, and I know that their story will be intimately entwined with that of Medivh. We can also expect to see dwarves, trolls, elves, revenants and wraiths.
The impression I’ve picked up, from a few sources and the information I’ve been passed, is that this project makes no concessions to tidy mainstreaming, or chewing the gristle out of its meaty, raw fantasy ideas. The names are big and a spellcheck unfriendly, there will be mythical creatures all over the place, the magic will flow and so will the talk of prophecies and ancient artefacts.
Jones promised at San Diego that production on Warcraft will start early next year, which makes a 2015 release date look good.
I’m sure that concept art is being developed right now, which means that an awful lot of artists will be having the time of their lives. I can’t wait to see what they’re coming up with.

If this is true, I am glad they are doing the story of the first game instead of forcing it to take place during the MMO.
This is good.
Very good. Perhaps Blizzard can redeem the series with this. I loved the fuck out of the early warcraft games. Mostly WC2.
fuck i dont want johnny depp just because its johnny depp
"expect him to be a scene stealer" of course, even if he has the shittiest role people are still gonna be drooling all over his ~style~
has the 'huge green monster with tusks' type of orc been done on the big screen before?
As long as Medivh becomes the bad guy in the movie too I'm fuckin' hyped
We've known it was going to be based before WoW for ages.
Depp as Medivh... Ehhhhh it could work.
The Rock as Lothar? Fuck no. Mark Strong, definitely.
Who is this guy anyway? A lot of this sounds like it's been pulled out of his ass.
considering Medivh is the villain during Warcraft 2, I don't see Depp working
Honestly this is kind of a weird place to put the movie. The closing of the Black Gate is kind of a Pyrrhic victory
in fact most of warcraft's plot lines end on a depressing note
Medivh's always been my favorite character in Warcraft lore, it would be interesting to see what Depp could pull off.

Medivh isn't in WC2. You kill him in WC1 and he is somehow revived between 2 and 3.
The timing makes perfect sense, The closing of the gate doesn't happen until the end of WC2. The ending would be after Khadgar kills Medivh and the orcs are driven back, then everybody's all "Hooray! We did it!". Then the second movie starts with the sacking of Stormwind and everything goes to shit.

I really wish it was just a movie about Arthas.
Arthas is such a simple and interesting character. Tch.
Its the best approach, if the film turn out to be good then I hope they end up moving to doing WC3 and FT.
Ah yes, the old classic that was going to be Warhammer but didn't have the license; makes sense to make a movie that starts from the beginning.
But it makes me wonder, what if Blizzard actually got the permission from Games Workshop back in the day? Amongst other things, Warhammer Online and World of Warcraft would be one and the same, as "World of Warhammer", and Defense of the Ancients would have had a more Warhammery aesthetic.
This movie needs Jim Carrey.

Warhammer is a really really dark setting. While Warcraft can still be dark at some times (largely excluding WoW here.) It has a good deal of humor in it.

Rob Schneider as Orgim's Doomhammer.
Arthas is such a simple and interesting character. Tch.
Arthas is about as interesting as Anakin Skywalker. Typical 'good guy tragically turned evil' story we've seen a million times before. Sure he was a cool bad guy, but his story is far from interesting enough to base an entire movie about him.

Jim Carrey for Zul'Jin.

I liked Arthas.
It could be a very good movie if they spent like 80% of it, before he was corrupted.
Cast eddie murphy and adam sandaler as everyone
I can already tell that this movie is going to kick some serious ass.
Damn it, still have almost two years of waiting. :suicide:

I wonder... who will play Llane Wrynn?
I hope it has more blood in it than The Hobbit did. Still peeves me a bit going from black orcs blood in LOTR to nothing.
I wonder... who will play Llane Wrynn?
Sean Bean.
You know it's going to happen.
Corpsegrinder from Cannibal Corpse as an Orc, he'd love that.
Well I'm relieved. It sounds like it's taking the proper path right now.
If this works out, I'm looking forward to a WC3 movie. Just imagine Arthas becoming the Lich king in full detail

Between WC3 and WotLK I can safely say that I'm tired of Arthas.

Closest I can think of are the Gamorreans, but they're not really orcs.
I really hope they touch into the story of Lady Sylvanas, I find her story one of the more emotional and amazing stories in the Warcraft Lore.
For those who haven't read up on her.

I want to see Outland in a Warcraft movie.

Aww man, I wanted a movie about UndeadxBlood Elf tavern romance, people yelling swears in large cities and people streaking everywhere.
Arthas is the best character.
I prefer the Illidan/Malfurion/Tyrande story, the night elf lore is fantastic
