So I was at a new store in my town today and they have no one working there besides 1 security guard. The way you check things out is with a self checker that uses computers to do the job instead of a cashier and this made me think, if robots are taking over jobs how are people going to pay for the things the company wants you to buy. so what do you guys think will happen with technological unemployment, and don't say "well people will have jobs building the machines so it will replace the lost jobs" because it doesn't work that way. so will it be that no one has jobs, technological utopia with no money or will they make it illegal to just use robots to do jobs?
(i cant think of the best icon for this so i just used science)
There will be jobs and different areas. Just because we expand to robots, machines, and the like doesn't mean we lose all personnel. We're may lose surgeons to robots, but surgeons will be controlling those robots. Or the scientists will be or someone. If not, there will be other jobs available. We always need people somewhere. Sure, there will be more jobs lost to technology, but it's absolutely silly to think all jobs will be lost to technology.
Also, making robots illegal would be stupid honestly.

yes but alot of them, like all the ones that need labor to do
If robots replace jobs, then more jobs will open that involve repairing those robots.

you heard what i said. also robots can repair robots
yes but alot of them, like all the ones that need labor to do
You're right. The art of automation is going to eventually kill off alot of the labor markets. The real threat is cheap labor (off seas labor/manufacturing) which makes it hard for a country to be self sufficient.
But we really brought this on upon ourselves.
yes but alot of them, like all the ones that need labor to do
No, not all the ones that need labor to do. Not if it's not efficient. The world isn't going to turn into the world represented in "iRobot", nor is it going to be run by robots or anything. It's just not going to happen.

no its just not going to happen is a good way to look at things. but srsly robots are taking more and more jobs every year what are we going to do about it
What happens when we get robots like in the movie i robot that basically do everything and anything for people?
Then they can build, repair, maintain, and run our society and make people obsolete.
let me give a list of the lings robots are doing
stock trading
drive threw restrains with only one person working in it
making anything (cars, toys etc)
doctors
driving
building

well then you either become lazy and watch tv all day or you spend your time studying mountain climbing getting girls reading and anything else you want to do

Sounds like paradise to me.
But then what happens to the economy?
Sounds like paradise to me.

well you dont have to care about the economy after that cause you are living the good life
Once we have robots doing everything we can go communist. no point having jobs anymore
Once we have robots doing everything we can go communist. no point having jobs anymore
thats called the venus project or any other kind of technocracy
Once we have robots doing everything we can go communist. no point having jobs anymore
The matrix.
The matrix.
The Matrix would suck dick unless it was a sandbox world and even then it would still suck because everyone would end up trying to RP.
Well the thing is though a human interaction will always provide more comfort when it comes to customer service for the few decades. Still though the retail market is same from robots for some time yet.

i dont think so with shopping because it only took a sec to do and it was much easier and thats what people will like and it kinda doesnt matter because its about the cost of hiring someone vs having machines do it
Sounds like the perfect job of the future is being a security guard.
Robots can be security guards.
Get a job that involves fixing robots, robots can't exactly perfect the whole fixing each other part for a while from now.

i dont think it would be that hard because robots can tel when they are not working properly (your car does this by blinking a light that says what part of the car is broke) now all it needs to do is have the ability to tell another robot that it is broke so it can fix it (also robots dont break often anyways)
Well we could have a technological utopia where nobody works because everything is already provided by a massive network of machines. Unfortunately, the automation of the workforce is being spearheaded by the corporations, who don't see technology as a way to keep the bottom guys from working, but as a way to keep the top guys from paying.
...and? If robots take all our jobs, we just get more leisure time. You're not taking into account that the economy and the way currency is used and handled would change dramatically if this happened.
im pretty sure this would murder the lower class.
technology creating long-term unemployment is a fallacy.
saying otherwise would be like saying that shitting on the floor of your favorite restaurant is good because it gives the janitor "employment".
If robots do ALL the work, no one would have to work anymore except some poor mechanics and stuff. But this way simply some jobs are lost.
There'll always be jobs in the service sector.
you heard what i said. also robots can repair robots
And what if the robots who repair robots break down?
There'll always be jobs in the service sector.
until we develop human-level artificial intelligence, that is.
And what if the robots who repair robots break down?
robot a is a repair bot. so is robot b. robot a breaks. robot b fixes it. robot b breaks sometime later. robot a fixes it. :ms:
