Pokémon Go, the augmented reality mobile game from Nintendo and developer Niantic Labs, is out now for both iOS and Android in select countries. The app's Play Store listing is available here and the App Store link here. However, it appears the Android version is unavailable for some US users at this time, while Australia and New Zealand users are reporting the app is indeed available for both Android and iOS. According to The Wall Street Journal, The Pokémon Company is recommending US and Japan users "please wait for a while" for the app's official launch in those markets. For those who haven't been following the title's development, the game uses your smartphone's camera and sensors, as well as location-based algorithms, to place pokémon in the real world. That way, as you travel around to landmarks and notable locations in your city, you can catch the creatures and then train and battle them at gyms. The game was created by Niantic, the maker of a similar AR mobile game called Ingress, in collaboration with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. While it's a free app, Pokémon Go does contain microtransactions costing $0.99 to $99.99. You can also purchase a $35 wrist-worn wearable, due out some time this month, that lets you play the game without having to unlock your phone. It's not that great. I don't know if I had unrealistic expectations, but no battling or trading makes it a glorified version of that google maps pokemon april fools joke thing.
It is really barebones as of right now. No way to battle anyone besides at gyms. No way to add anyone. Can't trade. You don't see other trainers on your map.
Ingress was very barebones when it first came out, but the updates added a shitton of new features. I'd guess this game will take a few months to ramp up as well.
Hopefully they'll add trading and battling, and then I think I'll get it again.
My Galaxy S3 has 1.5GB of RAM, it requires 2GB of RAM. RIP me
Hopefully they'll add trading and battling, and then I think I'll get it again.
And more pokemons. 115 is very little considering how many exist in the other games.
And more pokemons. 115 is very little considering how many exist in the other games.
I was about to look up how many pokemon were exactly in it. 115 is very low. That's not even one regions pokedex, is it? I'm worried the unfinished state the games released in will tarnish the idea of a GPS tracking AR based pokemon game, because with the hype this game built on its announcement, it's got a lot to live up to with 1/3 the features/mechanics of a pokemon game.
Breaking: New Pokemon Go app kills thousands in the midst of a brutal Texas summer. Having all the pokemon be fire type around here would be fitting.

Unfortunately I don't have a constant internet connection (3G or 4G whatever) so I'll probably just wait for Sun & Moon because at least then I can just play at home without going to that many places (or if I want to go somewhere) without a stable internet connection. Also, while of the topic of that, while I like the more recent Pokemon games, I'm bated in the trap to early start online trading. Which allows me to obtain an OP Pokemon very early, so I think I'll stay away from that until beating the game.
i'm liking it so far. i feel like i'm gonna enjoy it more than ingress also i hope they add a chat. one of my favorite things about ingress was hanging out with the community
Caught a dodrio on my leg
Ran into a bug where if you customize anything on your character, the game gets stuck on that screen. I'm on a Nexus 5 though so maybe my phone is just terribly outdated.
Do you just start out with a starter pokemon from one of the generations? I started out with bulbasaur and I was hoping I could trade him for a not-awful starter, but it doesn't seem like trading's a thing yet.
My roomate and I downloaded it the minute it released in the us and went foraging around the neighborhood at 11 aclock at night.
when are other countries added?
And more pokemons. 115 is very little considering how many exist in the other games.
I'm looking at my new Pokedex right now and it definitely has 133
As far as I know all the pokemons are from first gen and the high end ones + legendaries are not in until they figure it out. Also anyone else downloaded the apk and played before their countries release? I can't seem to connect to the servers anymore. It's either they're down or I have been banned.
The rumor that people were banned for playing before their countries release was bullshit. Don't believe the rumors. Also Niantic said that all the pokemon will be put into the game in an interview a while back
I'm looking at my new Pokedex right now and it definitely has 133
The Pokedex seems to only display up to what you've captured. I haven't seen any mons other than kantomons tho, so I'm guessing there's 149 at least.
My roomate went to my local college and people have already taken over the local college gyms. This is gonna be fucking sick when they fully flesh it out.
Keeps telling me An error has occurred and to try a new name :(
It's a shame it's so barebones right now, but I still expect to have fun with it. It'll be a fun thing to do sporadically throughout daily life, checking the area for Pokemon and PokeSpots whenever I go out. I'm just mad that they waited until July to release it, because in the past couple months I took trips to Toronto and Columbus. I don't have any other trips planned for the rest of the year. :(
And more pokemons. 115 is very little considering how many exist in the other games.
Where are you getting 115 from? The in-game Pokedex shows at least 149 (catching a Dragonite unlocks all the slots up to it), which indicates that it's at least the complete Kanto dex.
One thing I don't like about it, and I suspect that this is baked into it's design, is how pokespots work. Cities are fucking bustling with pokemon but if you live in more rural areas the pokepopulation is kinda low.
Cities are fucking bustling with pokemon but if you live in more rural areas the pokepopulation is kinda low.
Yeah, this bothers me. I live in the middle of a wooded countryside so I expected it to be swarming with wildlife out here, but it's pretty dead unless I drive into the nearest town. At least the tiny town I live next to actually has PokeSpots, I wasn't expecting it to have anything. No gyms, though. :( Occasionally a Caterpie will pop up in my room, though, so there's that. Interestingly I only see Caterpie out here, while the nearby town is swarming with Weedles.
The PokéSpots are taken from Ingress (portals or whatever they're called), while it makes sense that they'd use Ingress data to populate the world for Pokémon Go, it would've been cool and interesting for the players to populate the world themselves with PokéSpots and gyms, here at my work in Brussels theres about 50 spots around the office and tons of pokemon, hell I can even get 2 spots without getting up from my desk, whereas at my house, there's no spots nearby, there's 1 spot and 1 single gym in the center of town, and that's it, there's no Pokémon nearby what so ever either, and I live in a mid sized city, not a small ass town..
I'm just ticked at the whole thing. I was expecting actual Pokemon battles and such, not just... swiping.
All the pokespots near me have been at very odd locations and they've only been filled with white nothingness. Kinda dull.
