I started playing Runescape in 2001.
I remember you couldn't see other people's levels so you could just lead them to the Wilderness and murder them, or get murdered because they were doing the same thing lol. I also remember there only being 3 worlds. With 1000 players playing between all three at any time. Man... Blast to the past...

if you still have your account and get membership you can still play with the few dozen weirdos still in there
That was a really nice documentary. I still play runescape to this day and i still love playing it. I wonder how many hundreds of hours i've spent in the game.
It kind of saddened me when I decided to go back for shits and giggles to try and see if I could log in to my old account but I can't remember what email I attached to the account I had to recover my password.
I have a friend who used to work there. Apparently the company structure is a piece of shit and working there is a nightmare. I've heard multiple reports of this as well.
He left in the middle of http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Transformers_Universe foreseeing the cancellation.

Do you have those reports somewhere? I would like to read about it.
Otherwise I really loved Runescape way back when but sadly my old account is long lost due to my memory. I feel like a minority when I say I still think it's enjoyable though...I played many hours recently, but it's been a while since I got back on. I like it still? It seems most people only play the old school one though.
runescape was so awesome haha

Well you have https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Jagex-Reviews-E322592.htm
The reports I've "heard" are from random people at game developer conferences who have worked there before.
They hired too many people and it became a middle management hell full of micro management in areas where it wasn't needed. Over the shoulder middle management became a thing. Lots of pressure. Imagine the frustration of having to explain to a middle manager why a "Physics based MMO" is a bad idea and meeting a wall of "no you have to do it" because that middle manager have to show results to the higher ups, not failure. This was the case in transformers universe.
Engine programmers being physically separated from the gameplay programmers etc. Really bad company structure. Lots of people just noping out of there.
Good game though. Lots of money involved.
I'm still permanently muted after 11 years on my main account for being a scamming, swearing lil' shit who didn't realize quoting 50 Cent-lyrics would maybe probably not be okay given the contents :vs: If I could get unmuted I'd probably go back into the game and sink some time into it, but the Jagex Twitter support deemed my mute "still valid today", which is insane.

I remember being permanently muted after talking about GTA San Andreas with someone. :v:
I stopped playing after that until a few years later I returned on a whim to discover I was unmuted for some reason.
They sent me a email this past December saying my old account name would be deleted if I didn't sign in by the end of the year. I didn't. :v:
Jagex is also one of those companies notorious (or at least they were) for taking community suggestions but giving no credit whatsoever.
They also never looked at people the community thought were prominent figures and often gave Mod status in game to people nobody knew that while thankfully no Mods were really abusive ever, they never did anything, even when reported with hackers / spammers, etc.
overall Jagex is a shit company and I'm surprised Runescape lasted this long tbh but it's bittersweet because a lot of my childhood was spent playing it
I can still get into my account but it's linked to an old yahoo account that's been suspended for years due to inactivity. Not much lost though since my highest skill was only 71, but that account spawned my username which kinda marked the beginning of my online life in a way. I remember being hardcore addicted to that game.
I also remember a time when I accidentally posted a bunch of gibberish in chat and a mod offscreen told me he'd mute me if I did it again even though we were the only ones around. Scared the shit out of me since I was only 12.
Did they ever add anymore f2p content? I remeber them adding in a tutorial quest thing and it being a huge deal because by that point I had long since finished all of the fp2 quests.

they've added a few quests, and I think made it so you can get higher tier magic/ranged gear+things like prayer pots, but f2p has been dead for years ever since they took out pvp+bot nuking.
There is some part of me that really wants to live in the universe where RuneScape manages to outlive WoW.
One Jmod developer mentioned on Neogaf ages ago that one of the temporary interns were kicked off because he was being anti-religious or something, basically a 2004 Alahu Ackbar. they had to scrap all of the guy's content. think they also pieced random content together from various ideas to produce Monkey Madness and Desert Treasure.
Semi-related. but due to internal skill numbers. Hunter was originally supposed to be released before Swan Song, justifying the boat initially since the Hunter areas wasn't added. but it was held back, presumably due to the large development on the construction skill. (internally, Construction is skill 23, but Hunter was skill 22) one of the original ideas was that Hunter fur might have been intended to be used for the skill. strangely enough Construction was released at the end of the month when Swan Song was released.
[sp]might be iffy memory. but i could've sworn that the dwarf skeleton in the Dwarf Cannon quest was a dwarf child and not an adult. some reason i think they altered the lines or renamed the item to make it sound less grim, since he was devoured by goblins[/sp]
If I could only go back and relive all those awesome memories, the hundreds of people I've met, seeing and actually getting a "Hi" back from Zezima, getting super excited for each week's new update, waking up early just to play a little bit before school. It was such a great experience for a young me, especially when my dad, who is not into videogames to begin with, started playing with me and my brother. He was so into it that he even surpassed me in combat level at one point.
I still log in at some points, maybe get a month of membership and pick up where I left off on some of my high-set goals, but many of the people I logged into the game for have long since gone and seeing the river of red 'Offline' tends to be a bit heartbreaking and I end up leaving again.
Runescape will certainly always hold a special place in my life story.

Those few dozen weirdos are 90% bots. Since the game never goes down for maintenance or updates, once something bugs out, it remains bugged forever. For example, I believe the crystal chest has been bugged and unusable for like a year now.
After I quit in high school I never really had any urge to go back, but god damn if I don't have some wonderful memories from Runescape back in the day. Runescape ended up being the reason I got into computers, all because I had to learn how to update my graphics drivers in order to play when they released that first big graphics update.

Funny that that I got a permaban appealed successfully for attempting to sell my account in 2004 (was just 12 year old me being a dickhead). They didn't really say I learnt my lesson but it was just the generic "We've detected unusual activity in your account" response.
Say what you will about Steam customer support, but you have not experienced shitty support until you've tried to appeal a ban through Jagex.

Maybe the chest is just permafucked or some asshole keeps glitching it out again. Just logged in to check and it is still glitched out.

Ohh I don't know about the old one. It went down on the new Runescape.

I think Andrew was smart to bail when he did. Investors were having more and more sway over his game and he was having less and less. All they care about is money at this point. I'll always love Runescape to death but the way it's been managed since he left is absolutely terrible.
I still play, Oldschool though, really like the way it's shaping. The developers are actually much more friendly now and participate in discussions with the community.
But as always they are corrupt at times. In one case, a streamer/YouTuber "Returning Wednesday" began broadcasting another Runescape player. That player ended up getting a manual permaban for no reason whatsoever.
I'm just glad that now they are asking the community for what they want inside the game and polling all the big stuff.
I started playing in 2003-2004'ish, was my first MMO i was 14 years old and stopped in 2006 when world of warcraft caught my attention. Still i have fond memories of my time playing, fun game and quests back then. I even managed to get my mom to sign up for the 5$ membership for a period of time despite being just a kid lol. I was member of the guild Masors that hosted huge drop parties and clan gatherings. Great times
EoC is probably the most corporate, out of touch, decision jag has made besides microtrans.Their rationale was that players who quit did it because they didn't like the combat, so they copied WoW.
The thing Jag failed to realize is that people left in droves because the things they loved and all the hours of work they put into it was pushed off the table and into the trash with a firm "developer knows best even when we're wrong." They did it the first time in 2007 and by 2012 they still hadn't learned their lesson.
I remember when EoC was in beta, I decided to try out the healing abilities in The Fight Cave. I'd never gotten far enough to get a fire cape since I was playing pretty casually for most of the time.
I managed to faceroll my way through the entire thing. Combat was laughable with EoC. It was at that point that I realised this wasn't the direction I wanted runescape to go and I gave up on it.
I remember that a lot of disabled gamers had to quit for a while too since they could only really play because of its simple combat, and with the added layer of abilities to constantly use it just became impossible till they added revolution.
Jagex today really doesn't know what they're doing anymore.
SO OKAY

You know some dude tweeted the jagex support team saying their account got stolen, and they put a streamers RSN.
Jagex actually locked that account.
Also play osrs. Not rs3.
