• There's Salt Water On The Surface Of Europa
Scientists are pretty confident Europa is home to a vast subterranean ocean, but could it have any water on its surface? According to a new study, maybe yes. That’s big news for anyone hoping to send a robotic explorer to the icy moon. And it could be big news for anyone interested in the possibility of life on that Jovian satellite. Salty water from Europa’s 60-mile-thick ocean makes its way to the surface somehow through cracks in its ice sheet, according to new research. Once it’s there, it is exposed to sulfur from the neighboring moon Io, Jupiter’s largest. Magnesium chloride in the water interacts with the sulfur and produces magnesium sulfate, according to an analysis by astronomers Mike Brown of Caltech and Kevin Hand of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2013-03/europa-leaks-salty-water-its-surface-which-could-be-good-news-life-hunting-missions
didn't we cancel our europa trip in lieu of another mars mission? fuck that, we need to get our ass to europa and do some ice fishing with neil degrasse tyson.

What is that from? It looks familiar but I can't place it.
JUICE is being planned curently
oh i thought it got scrapped. that's totally optimistic then!
What is that from? It looks familiar but I can't place it.
2010: Odyssey Two. Sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Mars may yet prove to hold at the very least ancient traces of life. I do believe Europa contains life (vast oceans heated by geothermal energy is more than enough for life to flourish) but we currently lack the capabilities and funding to send sophisticated equipment like the Mars rovers there. We should also be careful before sending anything to explore its oceans as we may risk contamination which could ultimately decimate an alien ecosystem.
2010: Odyssey Two. Sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey.
2010: Odyssey Two is the novel. The movie is 2010: The Year We Make Contact :eng101: [editline]5th March 2013[/editline]
thats uh... scary
It's not the full message. The creepiest part of that movie is when Bowman appears as the starchild. There was something very... unnerving about that.
Does anyone else get a Lost Planet vibe from all of this?
I didn't realize they made a movie out of 2010 too, is it as good as 2001?
Oh my. How salty exactly?
I saw the thread title and instantly started hunting for this screenshot. Couldn't find it. Then decided to look to see if people beat me to it. Honestly, though, I liked The Year We Made Contact more than A Space Odyssey. 2001 was great, don't get me wrong, but I just feel like 2010 was more... impacting. Mostly the last scene with the [sp]thousands of Monoliths that engulf Jupiter, transforming the planet into a star.[/sp]
We should send out a Prob or something to it
I didn't realize they made a movie out of 2010 too, is it as good as 2001?
It's not made by Kubrick so no. As a movie, it's great but it lacks what made 2001 amazing, the innovative cinematography.
I didn't realize they made a movie out of 2010 too, is it as good as 2001?
Not even close. You've kind of got to think of it as a different film when you watch it and not associate it to 2001 cuz it's good... just no where near as good.
