It comes amid fierce fighting close to the capital, Damascus. The UN estimates that more than 60,000 people have been killed in the uprising against President Assad, which began in March 2011. 'Live and die' The speech is Mr Assad's first public address since June. In an interview with Russian TV in November - his last public comments - he said he would "live and die in Syria". Since then opposition rebels have gained control of swathes of territory in northern Syria, and have formed a more inclusive leadership council which has been recognised by the US and the EU. But opposition efforts to gain ground in and around major cities including Damascus have been met by stiff resistance and increasingly destructive air strikes. On Saturday the UK-based activist group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, reported fierce fighting in Harasta and Daraya, suburbs of Damascus. Diplomatic attempts to end the conflict in Syria have so far failed. UN and Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has been pushing a plan approved at an international conference in June that would create a transitional government. But the plan leaves President Assad's role unclear. The Syrian opposition has insisted that Mr Assad must step down for the conflict to end. Mr Brahimi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said a week ago that a negotiated solution was the only option. On Friday, Nato began to deploy Patriot missiles to Turkey to help Turkish troops repel attacks by missiles or aircraft from Syria.
live stream
his days are numbered
his days are numbered
I wonder if he is going to go to the end like he said previously. Related, He is pretty much putting the blame entirely on the rebels at the moment.
This is pretty syriaus.
This is pretty syriaus.
He is a real rebel bashar
He says he is willing to negotiate with anybody but Islamists, essentially what he is going on about. Probably lying but whatever.
I can't get over that he looks alot like an unfun Mr. Bean.
He is a real rebel bashar
That pun is half-assad.
He is suggesting moderated peace and a political solution, listing off his requirements. [editline]6th January 2013[/editline] He is suggesting a charter be written with opposition for the future of Syria if I'm understanding correctly. [editline]6th January 2013[/editline] He is suggesting a political solution would include general amnesty and is suggesting that political solution be drawn up within the next few days.
so what will happen when (if it happens) he's dead? will americunt come in and shit their fake freedom all over it?
Oh man that translator succeeeeees
That pun is half-assad.
what assad attempt at making puns
Speech over, now to wait a hour or so for the media to dissect the important bits and report on it. [editline]6th January 2013[/editline] "President Assad spoke of a political solution based on halt to foreign funding of rebels, new national charter and referendum" -BBC
I guess he's going to be in assad state of affairs once this war's over. :suicide:
Honestly, seeing who might get in charge of the country, Syria was better off with this guy.
Bashar al-Asshat
He looks like Neville Chamberlain.
Bastard is part of the Empire, Rebel Alliance all the way
Bastard is part of the Empire, Rebel Alliance all the way
Rebel Alliance are terrorists
Rebel Alliance are terrorists
I had friends who worked on the Death Star...
his days are numbered
People have been saying this for over a year now. It's a very large number, I'm guessing.
If Syria ends up becoming some extremist Islamic state it will be a real shame. I'd almost want Assad over that.
I'm kinda surprise he didn't fled the country already.
I had friends who worked on the Death Star...
No way! Me too, what sector did your's work in?
too much blood has been shed in syria although unlikely, the ideal situation would be for assad to stay in power. he is surely the lesser of 2 evils. and fuck extremism
He's a monster, and should be killed by the rebels. Can't wait when the rebels control the country. I'd rather have a muslim government than one controlled by a person who bombs innocent people and shoots down peaceful protests. EDIT: Victim of the war, started by whom?
Keep assad and have oppressed people. Or lose assad and have a power vacuum most likely resulting in Extremists taking power and it turns into the new Somalia or Afghanistan.
Man, all of the assads are just weird looking. Bashar has a tiny face and an odd neck And Hafez has an Alien head. Maybe these al-assads are extra-terrestrials?
