Washington (CNN) – Joe Arpaio, the Republican former Maricopa County sheriff known for his hard-line immigration tactics, says he's running for Senate. "I have a lot to offer. I'm a big supporter of President Trump," Arpaio told the Washington Examiner in an interview kicking off his campaign. "I'm going to have to work hard; you don't take anything for granted. But I would not being doing this if I thought that I could not win. I'm not here to get my name in the paper, I get that every day, anyway." Arpaio was defeated in the 2016 election after 24 years in office as sheriff. He was convicted last year of criminal contempt for defying a court order to stop racially profiling Latinos but was pardoned by President Donald Trump, whose presidential campaign Arpaio had supported, in August before serving any jail time.

Sets up primary fight GOP Sen. Jeff Flake is retiring, setting up a fight among top Arizona Republicans for the nomination. National Republicans appear poised to land their top recruit for the seat: Rep. Martha McSally is set to holds events Friday in Tucson, Phoenix and Prescott where she'll make what's being billed as a "special announcement." Arpaio and McSally would join Kelli Ward, the conservative state senator who drew 40% of the vote in the 2016 primary against Sen. John McCain, in the race. Ward is supported by a super PAC funded by the GOP megadonor Mercer family. She was also backed by Steve Bannon -- though Ward distanced herself from the former White House chief strategist after Bannon's comments in a new book drew condemnation from Trump. The Democratic candidate in a race that represents one of the party's best pick-up opportunities on the 2018 midterm map is Rep. Kyrsten Sinema.
Source
Another fascist knocking at the federal government's gate. Let's hope a more conventional candidate keeps him out of the general election.
I'm a big supporter of President Trump,
Mr. Arpaio said a lot of words, but this is the only thing you need to take away from it.
Please arizonans vote for kyrsten sinema.
The Democrat candidate's positions check out pretty well based on a brief scan of her wiki page. She'd be a shoe-in if she was running within MA. If Democrats can get the race as charged up as they did for Alabama, there may be a chance, especially if they can match the core base of GOP voters. I'm sure there will be an analysis of the demographics from 538.
can convicted criminals run for senate?
Arizonians (Arizonans?), for the love of God, please pull an Alabama.
can convicted criminals run for senate?
Of course they can. Whether or not they should be senator is another matter and is up to the voters.
Absolutely not. We stopped a pedo, we'll stop him too.
Of course he is...
Yes lets elect a person who indirectly killed people through neglect in his jails and joked about running an illegal immigrant concentration camp. Fuck him and anyone who supports him.
Absolutely not. We stopped a pedo, we'll stop him too.
Is this what politics is now? Stopping the utterly obviously morally bankrupt from winning through the skin of our teeth? Are we going to fight someone who eats babies for breakfast tommorow? What has gone wrong with this country
Arizonians (Arizonans?), for the love of God, please pull an Alabama.
If not, let's just give the state back to Mexico.
How can convicted, guilty felons run for Senate but not be allowed to vote in many states? Can someone who knows more on the topic please explain this to me?
"This is greatly disturbing" is what you'll hear from every damn Republican before their torso drops to the floor like a slinky due to the absence of a spine If their establishment pick doesn't make it, I fully expect the RNC to do what they did with Moore and throw their support behind Mr. Concentration Camp. Vote these fucking monsters out

STOP PLEASE.
How can convicted, guilty felons run for Senate but not be allowed to vote in many states? "Hey Adams, think we should write something down about criminals running for public office?" "Naw, the good people of our nation are smart enough not to elect criminals to high office. No need to write that down".
I think it's probably one of those things where it wasn't written in the original books because it wasn't thought of. "Hey Adams, think we should write something down about criminals running for public office?" "Naw, the good people of our nation are smart enough not to elect criminals to high office. No need to write that down".
I think part of it had to do with worries about the judicial branch undermining the legislative/executive branches. IE they were worried about a corrupt court system convicting any Congressional candidate they didn't like to prevent them for running from office. Are you trying to argue convicted felons shouldn't be able to run for office? Personally I think that if someone has served their time there shouldn't be any lasting penalties. You can become a convicted felon for having too much weed on you in Arizona. Felons who have served their time can vote in most states, but I agree that's bullshit its taken away at any point and the right to vote should never be taken away. This isn't me defending Arpaio. He's the closest the US has come to running literal concentration camps in recent history. I don't understand how anyone can support him after that story about him trying to plant a pipe bomb on a teenager to boost his polling.
can convicted criminals run for senate?
We're about to have one as our President soon
First a child molester, now this. GOP's really putting their best foot forward, huh?
Their best are what normal people call "the worst"
They aren't sending their best, folks.
We have some bad yokels here.
This guy makes my blood boil. I still cannot believe the sickness of pardoning him.
If he makes it past the primary I think he'd be a incredibly weak candidate.
can convicted criminals run for senate?
Convicted criminals can run for President.
Totally not Quid Pro Quo. Trump pardon's him, he runs for senate openly supporting all of trump's agenda.
Arpaio is an evil man who deserves to be charged with crimes against humanity, not run for senate. Outside of the well-documented crimes against humanity that Arpaio has committed against illegal immigrants, he's also an absolute fucking failure on actual crime. He is so self-obsessed with tracking down illegal immigrants and abusing them that the MCSO failed to investigate or resolve thousands of sex abuse cases, including hundreds of incidences of child sexual abuse. Arpaio is not only a psychopath who abuses and tortures his inmates - he also protects child rapists. Sound familiar? It's the GOP mantra. The MCSO marked multiple child rape cases as "exceptionally cleared" or "solved" despite never even fucking investigating them at all. In one case they marked a child rape case as solved despite never identifying a suspect. When a thirteen-year-old girl with mental disabilities reported to a teacher that her uncle had raped her, the MCSO lied to the girl's family about the lab's rape kits results and the detective denied the factual existence of physical evidence, including semen and physical trauma. Her uncle continued raping her with impunity for four years - because the MCSO detective ignored the lab's request for a blood sample from the uncle and marked the case closed. Arpaio's response to this shit was effectively just "we're understaffed." The MCSO's special victims unit was three people, reduced from five, for an area with a population of 4.2 million. Less than once percent of the MCSO worked on child sex abuse cases - yet he has hundreds or thousands of his employees working to track down and arrest illegal immigrants. Rape's okay so long as we catch the spics, according to Arpaio. Arpaio has ignored hundreds of court orders. When a judge ordered the MCSO to put dashcams in all vehicles after a series of racial profiling lawsuits, Arpaio did nothing, and trivialized the judge's ruling in an official MCSO training video. Once, MCSO SWAT officers raided an upscale home looking for drugs and weapons, launching tear gas canisters through the windows, which then caught the house on fire. When the family dog, which was in the house at the time, tried to escape the flames, officers sprayed it with a fire extinguisher and locked it inside a burning house, killing it. Also, their APC ran over a neighbor's car, just because. They found an antique shotgun and a 9mm pistol, and no drugs, and caused hundreds of thousands in property damage. The MCSO is a radical militia group, and every officer affiliated with them is supporting what amounts to little more than a terrorist organization that assaults and threatens political opponents and hunts down racial minorities to jail, humiliate, abuse, and kill. Arpaio is the American Goebbels. I've never held more absolute hatred for a human in my life. Arpaio is truly evil - the only seat he deserves is an electric one.
How long until people start missing the days when politics was full of greasy scumbags and not dangerous criminals and lunatics.
