http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2010/08/13/no-shock-att-backs-wireless-exemption-from-net-neutrality/
In a move that surprises no one, AT&T weighed in to support an idea behind a plan from Google and Verizon that would exempt wireless networks from rules requiring equal treatment of Internet traffic. Reuters But the views of the telecom company are a drop in the bucket when compared with the furor the proposal ignited through most of the tech world. “Wireless is simply different,” wrote Joan Marsh, AT&T’s vice president of federal regulatory, in a post on an official company blog. “Wireless networks simply cannot provide the same amount of capacity as wireline networks,” and thus have to be able to manage traffic, she wrote in the post, which didn’t take a stance on specific aspects of the Google-Verizon proposal but argued that wireless shouldn’t be governed by the same rules. The need to manage traffic is one of the key points often cited by opponents of “net neutrality” — the idea that Internet providers should not deliberately slow or block Internet sites and services. Companies like phone and cable providers say they sometimes need to do that if a particular service is hogging capacity. So it’s no shock at all that Verizon and AT&T might want wireless carriers to be treated differently in any net-neutrality rules. What has the rest of the technology community up in arms is the fact that Google now also supports such an exemption, at least for now.
god damnit
If they want to let us pay more for better internet, fine by me, as long as they don't slow down access for those who don't want the upgrade.
If they want to let us pay more for better internet, fine by me, as long as they don't slow down access for those who don't want the upgrade.
But isn't this about the site owners paying up so they aren't buried in low-preference bandwidth?
If they want to let us pay more for better internet, fine by me, as long as they don't slow down access for those who don't want the upgrade.
But this is what will happen, "premium" users will be given priority on bandwidth leaving less for those who do not want to pay more.
But this is what will happen, "premium" users will be given priority on bandwidth leaving less for those who do not want to pay more.
I was going to say something like: "People wouldn't fall for that, I mean, come on." But then I thought about it. Be afraid people. Very.....very afraid.
And once again I will go ahead and point out that if this happens to land based lines, someone will create a ISP that doesn't bottleneck sites, and instantly get millions of internet users. :sax:
And once again I will go ahead and point out that if this happens to land based lines, someone will create a ISP that doesn't bottleneck sites, and instantly get millions of internet users. :sax:
Hopefully. But then again, hopefully this will be a temporary thing on wireless networks, which I only ever use to check Facepunch on the train or something with my phone.
And once again I will go ahead and point out that if this happens to land based lines, someone will create a ISP that doesn't bottleneck sites, and instantly get millions of internet users. :sax:
But the question is will it happen in Australia, will we get the NBN, and will my parents let us get that ISP
But the question is will it happen in Australia, will we get the NBN, and will my parents let us get that ISP
It's only 10 years away if labor gets in.
Meanwhile in Europe we enjoy the fastest and bestest internets :smug:
Meanwhile in Europe we enjoy the fastest and bestest internets :smug:
If this takes off it will be world-wide within a few months.
It's only 10 years away if labor gets in.
Yeah good luck with that, borrowing $50,000,000,000 to build it. The labor government says they will have a budget surplus by 2013, meaning we are earning nothing till then, and only then can we pay off any part of the total $300,000,000,000 debt the current government racked up in 3 years. How about no labor.
If this takes off it will be world-wide within a few months.
As much as I hate the EU and all branches thereof, I believe they would step in and stop this should any ISP try it. Alternatively you'll have someone who doesn't bottleneck as the rest of the ISPs which would then get the most costumers. :sax:
We really need to quarantine the US so this does not spread.
:argh: Can't they see that no one outside their company's think that it's a good idea!
Well, time to move.
Come on Time Warner stay normal.
If this takes off it will be world-wide within a few months.
Last time I checked it's illegal in most of Europe. Our governments actually have power over corporations.
Isn't this illegal here too? It should be if it already isn't. They'll be stopped.

You guys know that "tiered internet" has existed on the wireless spectrum for years, right? AT&T and Verizon have always blocked P2P protocols on their wireless networks. So let's not get mad at them NOW, you should have been mad at them the whole time.

It sounds like Verizon outright blocks it but AT&T just tells you not to do it in their ToS.
:argh: Can't they see that no one outside their company's think that it's a good idea!
They don't give a shit....
We really need to quarantine the US so this does not spread.
But I like it here :saddowns: Aside from our politics and stereotypes it is a very nice place to live.
I knew that this was going to happen.

Any country could even say "fuck off i won't pay" and nobody's gonna come and force them to pay. They just wouldn't have any more help from other countries
Just sign up with another ISP who gives you neutral traffic, problem solved.
Just sign up with another ISP who gives you neutral traffic, problem solved.
Individual service providers hold monopolies all over the place, especially in small communities. This doesn't always work. And don't say "move".
