• Don your tinfoil hats; "Incoming! The Sun Unleashes CME at Earth"
Earlier this morning, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) witnessed a complex magnetic eruption on the sun. The joint NASA/ESA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) -- a mission sitting at the L1 point between the Earth and the sun -- also spotted a large coronal mass ejection (CME) blasting in the direction of Earth. The eruption happened at around 0855 UT (3:55 am EST), when the SDO detected a C3-class solar flare originating from a cluster of sunspots (called sunspot 1092). This isn't a large flare, but right at the same time, a filament located about 100,000 kilometers from the flare also erupted.
hot-sauce :tinfoil: This was published yesterday... Should it have "hit" by now?
This happens alot, we have stuff that protects us.
OH SHIT Fuckfuckfuckfuck someone get the magnetic shields ffuuuuuuuuuuck I'm gonna lose everything on my HD WHERE WILL FACEPUNCH GO
This happens alot, we have stuff that protects us.
Aside from the atmosphere/ozone, not really. And while this may happen frequently, it usually isn't spewed at earth directly, but in another random direction. This particular instance wasn't super-duper bad, it'll probably just lead to some satellite interference, but this gives a bit of ground to the "Solar EMP" doomsday theory.
Solar EMP doesn't mean doomsday, you could probably manage to fix all of the electronics that get knocked out. And if not, we could remake them. With factories that use electroni- :ohdear:
BACKUP YOUR SHIT NOW :psyduck: ...wait, did it happen already?
Maybe this could explain why my PC would just turn itself off instantly.
Well, the EMP itself wouldn't lead to doomsday, it's what would ensue. Think about it; people would go nuts and riot in the streets, hospitals with no working equipment, banks will have lost everything. No banks = collapse of government. And then there's talk of automated first strike systems treating the destruction of defense satellites as an attack and every nuclear country on earth would blow each other to shit, but that's a bit far-fetched I would think.
Jesus sun, you have been doing solar flares for the last 1 million years! When will you finally just kill us all? So uhh... Yeah the sun is a pussy. Just sayin' no hate.
Is this why my computer had an emergency resume thing this morning?
I put tin foil dome shields all of my computers and external hard drives. They seem to be working so far. Only time will tell.

Wasn't a big deal back then because, shit, its just telegraph. But imagine if everything electronic in today's world was fried... Could've happened before 1867 as well, that's just the earliest time we can know of since there was nothing electronic that could've been affected before then.
It's only a C3 class flare, it's no big deal, really. The worst it might do is knock a satellite offline for a few minutes. On the plus side, people at nothern lattitudes will get a pretty show tomorrow.
Calm down guys, nothing will happen.

Data: "Captain, the Sun has charged its electron and proton torpedo cannons. Sensors also pick up traces of ionized Helium, Oxygen, and Iron isotopes. Our shields will not be able to take any damage without a massive boost from the auxiliary power stations." Picard: "Shields at maximum! Divert all auxiliary power to forward shielding manifolds. Even if this means bringing life support offline! I'd rather have us suffocate to death!"
I put tin foil dome shields all of my computers and external hard drives. They seem to be working so far. Only time will tell.
Hmmm, what's the name of the EMP resistant stuff used on Air Force One?
Shit just got real.
Should it have "hit" by now?

We can expect its arrival on Aug. 3.
Nothing bad will happen.

god I have a 3 page research paper due tomorrow for current topics in space sciences on this crap, specifically protecting spacemen/spaceobjects from them it will literally hurt nothing and the things it will most certainly have the least effect on is our satellites(they are designed to withstand this crap) depending on size it'll effect the diameter of the auroral circle tho literally the most boring thing ever
We can expect its arrival on Aug. 3.
Guys. ok late

Thought it said Coronal Mass Erection.
Fuck you sun, I'll EMP you then. See how you like it.
Thought it said Coronal Mass Erection. Get ready boys.
this man is so funny harrrrrrrrrrrrr
Okay, how to get atleast somekind of protection from the EMP? Shut down your computer and cover it with Tinfoil?
Okay, how to get atleast somekind of protection from the EMP? Shut down your computer and cover it with Tinfoil?
I believe there's an EMP resistance material that they use on Air Force One :eng101:
oh fuck oh fuck
Okay, how to get atleast somekind of protection from the EMP? Shut down your computer and cover it with Tinfoil?
Lot's and lot's of lead. Also, what's with the normal avatar? :frown:
