• Meaning of Life: Devil's Advocate

So this is a debate idea that I like to bring up sometimes. People usually call me a pessimist and a cynic for it, but it's just for argument. Prompt: Whose to say that everything that you do with your life doesn't just go in a casket when you die? This usually provokes them into discussing their own meaning of life. I first asked my mom, and she was like:
I should wake up in a good mood every day and if I can make everyone around me happy, then I've done something ect. bullshit ect.
She basically tried to get across that she was trying to be altruistic by being happy, which effects everyone around her. At 44 years old, her meaning of life is to make other people happy, just to make other people happy. That kind of pissed me off. Be happy to be happy. Fuck that. So I'll ask you: Is there any meaning in living your life? Do you have a motive to live?

I want to be famous someday. Not like being followed constantly by media famous, just famous for something I changed in the world for the better, that's what drives me.
Reproduce
Lets say I asked your future child the same question, and it gave the same response. It would kind of lead to the idea that the reason to live is to keep going. Pass our genes down to the next batch. Forever. I wholeheartedly deny that as the meaning of life.
There's no bloody meaning of life, now eat your cheerios and shut the fuck up.
There is no meaning of life. There is no predefined goal for us as a species, we just keep chugging along and eventually we will all die out.
my meaning of life is to live my day happy and make sure i'm alive for the next

If genes could somehow continuously exist without needing to live somehow, then they probably would, but they cannot, so they will live and create life so they can continue to exist in some form.
I want to be remembered for making a difference that benefits the planet. Not Einstein remembered, I just want to have made a difference to the human species.
Life is like Minecraft, the only point is what you make of it.
Of course there is meaning and motive. If anyone says otherwise they're lying. We all have plans to do something with ourselves no matter how big or how small.
Sorry. I brought up the meaning of life, but yeah. We don't know the meaning of life. I'm just asking if you have any reason to live. If you have no reason to live, then maybe suicide is a possibility. [editline]31st March 2011[/editline]
Life is like Minecraft, the only point is what you make of it.
But what happens when you find out that theres no point to minecraft? You build your magnum opus creation lined with gold and redstone circuits - and you realize that nothing actually came out of it. No point besides having it be there. My main argument is: Everything we do goes into a casket when we die. So with the minecraft idea, you build something. woo. you still die. Does it matter if whatever you create is left for the rest of the world to see, after you die?
Of course there is meaning and motive. If anyone says otherwise they're lying. We all have plans to do something with ourselves no matter how big or how small.
What do those plans amount to? You go off and become famous or create google - does that mean anything?
I'm pretty sure it is. If genes could somehow continuously exist without needing to live somehow, then they probably would, but they cannot, so they will live and create life so they can continue to exist in some form.
If they could exist without living? What? Here's the skinny, chief. Organisms that reproduce reproduce. The ones that want to reproduce the most eat all the ones that don't. So everything in the world wants to make lots more of itself, because if it didn't it would have been eaten instead. It's the reason you want to fuck. Because if every single organism preceding you didn't want to fuck you wouldn't be here, and so you have inherited your ancestors love of fucking.
Because we're sentient each one of us will have our own idea of what is good or evil, what is or isn't fun, etc. and thus we will find our own individual reason to live. Meaning is subjective. Objectively, the reason we exist is because our parents brought us into this world and the only reason we exist is merely to replicate that feat so that our children can continue the existence of our species.
Of course there is meaning and motive. If anyone says otherwise they're lying. We all have plans to do something with ourselves no matter how big or how small.
So? Of course we damn well have plans, I have a plan to sit down and bitch and moan on the internet. It doesn't mean that's some cosmic plan imposed upon me, it means I'm a bored asshole.
To go through all this shit, this human life, which is far more something than your common animals life.
life has no reason to exist [editline]31st March 2011[/editline] its so badass it doesn't need any :c00lbert:
To go through all this shit, this human life, which is far more something than your common animals life.
Not that it particularly matters, once your mind has been scattered into dust. Tears in the rain and whatnot.
To go through all this shit, this human life, which is far more something than your common animals life.
what did you just say

op, what is the point of this thread you ask people to post opinions on what their life goal is, and then belittle, ridicule and reject their answers when given.
op, what is the point of this thread you ask people to post opinions on what their life goal is, and then belittle, ridicule and reject their answers when given.
I'm just provoking thought. I am playing devil's advocate. [editline]31st March 2011[/editline] more of just playing asshole, but it is still meant to provoke
provoking something involves something along the lines of a nudge, a poke and a push in the right direction if you will. you're pushing people into a wall
op, what is the point of this thread you ask people to post opinions on what their life goal is, and then belittle, ridicule and reject their answers when given.
he's trying to imply there's some literal objective "meaning of life" no one's yet discovered because he's a young foolhardy fool who doesn't understand the amount of thought put into the subject in the entire history of philosophy
Just because there is no reason to live doesn't mean that you shouldn't. You only get one chance so do what really makes you happy.
provoking something involves something along the lines of a nudge, a poke and a push in the right direction if you will. you're pushing people into a wall
pout pout
he's trying to imply there's some literal objective "meaning of life" no one's yet discovered because he's a young foolhardy fool who doesn't understand the amount of thought put into the subject in the entire history of philosophy
I mentioned the "meaning of life" idea twice. But I'm really just trying to see you guys have found any reason to continue. I do appreciate some of the answers. I usually ask people who are older, but I want to see some facepunch answers.
A predetermined meaning to life is boring because it forces us into having goals we don't set. To be happy might seem alright but for someone who prefers drama or is a masochist or doesn't really care about being happy, it's very restrictive. It gives people the idea that they are not working towards the objective goal of their lives when there isn't one. They feel as though they worse for not aspiring to something they don't want to be. There is no meaning to life but what we make, no objective truth over what we should do with ourselves. We are free to shape our goals as we please whether those be the pursuit of happiness, the need for understanding, the betterment of oneself, the want to make others happy or anything else you can think of. Nothing is the only way.
The meaning of life is to live one.
To be completely and fully content without an ultimate answer... Now that is what it is to truly live.
The biggest lie in the history of mankind is that this life that you can see is all that exists. The meaning of human life is to transcend into higher dimensions. This purpose however has been torn from us a long time ago, and today it is still repressed. People are kept unaware by filling up their lifetime with incredibly pointless and time consuming activities. You spend so much of your youth being "educated", and you lose what's left of it entering a career. Entering your older stages of life, you can finally pursue your life desires with what wealth you acquired. Here you can fulfil it and feel satisfied, or realize how shallow your goal and ultimate reward was. If you're not accomplished, you are by now too old to create much of a future for yourself. Then, you die. Some of these people have children, and thus the cycle continues. And that is all of the world that you are made to see. You live life once, try to enjoy it, and then you die shortly after. That couldn't be more untrue.
