Ehh not really. When he first appeared as a kind of creeypasta on SomethingAwful being touted as real with the photoshopped images and creepypastas that followed it was pretty hair raising. Then Marble Hornets came along and gave Slenderman a physical presence which was pretty damn scary for a few videos.

I hate to be a hipster or whatever people call it but I've been with Slendy since the olden days of Marble Hornets. It used to be rather creepy then but now every bastard on YouTube is trying to cash in on it.
Hate how badly of a fad this has become, Slenderman can become the most frightening thing if executed properly, instead the attention goes to dumb Let's Players trying to rake in Youtube money by making tootally hirarios video of getting scared by a game that's not even scary or really lives up to Slenderman's reputation.

It's not being a hipster if it's completely true. However, Slenderman is still alive in things such as Marble Hornets, which still keep the original formula and don't try to capitalize on it more than just doing what they've been doing for several years.

Why did Slenderman suddenly become this huge internet and real world sensation? Marble Hornets has been around FOREVER and nobody outside of a devoted creepypasta fanbase cared about it until like summer of this year.
