The reuters article begins by saying its piracy, not terrorism, but terrorists have absolutely used kidnapping as a method of terrorism and financial gain. There's that TAL story about the guy who quoted Fight Club on his Facebook and was charged with terroristic threats. My brain classifies pirates kidnapping Americans as "terrorism" way before movie quotes.

So the sailors will probably survive, it isn't in the interests of the pirates to kill them and incur the wrath of the US.
