I will let you off with one last bit of information if your gonna write a story on this and that is Facetime, the iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 Wifi video connecting. The issue is with Wifi is that anyone can get on a Wifi Signal and potentially see what the viewers and broadcasters are looking at without them know, now Apple will deny this and say its not our problem you where not on a secure connection, in my mind I think that its all bullshit.
People should be able to have some type of security during those calls. Worst yet is once a person connects to another person on FaceTime it for some reason non of us in the office can figure out, sends us APPLE a message and says those two people are connecting via Facetime and gives out their location to us. So for whatever reason we need that information just blows my mind. As a consumer why would you need to let Apple know that you are connecting with a person via FaceTime, its non of Apple's business.
As far as Base Bands go it does not matter what baseband you TRY to get on the iPhone cause in the iOS4 there is a line of code we wrote that stands for OAU also known as "Over Air Updates". How it works is every 7 to 14 days We (Apple) and AT&T send a message to your iPhone that gathers some data from your iPhone without you knowing and we see what is running, baseband and firmware. We then send a following message. "There are optional updates for your iPhone, Would you like to install them now?" two options "Yes" or "Later". Those are what would would call "OPTIONAL UPDATES" Now there are things called "MANDATORY UPDATES". They tend to work the same way, grab data from the iPhones sends it to AT&T and us then back to your iPhone with the message, "Your iPhone (name of iphone) must be updated to the current AT&T standards to run", your only option is to "Accept" Now you can try to work your way around it until you get the second mandatory message again "You must plug iPhone into iTunes and update" If you don't do this you will then receive no Signal from the network anymore and your iPhone will potentially lock up with no signs of use until you update your iPhone via iTunes. You all agreed to this terms and condition when you installed iTunes 9.2 and then again once you updated to iOS4.
With that being Said go ahead Try to unlock the iPhone it will only last 14 days max then you will have to break that update for that one week then again and again we currently have 6 months worth of updates for this iOS4. Apple and AT&T now have complete control over their iPhones and what their customers are putting on them without them knowing anything about it. Many of the people I work with don't agree with this but even in our computers when people call in to Apple Care Support we can see if your iPhone is running a jailbreak and what baseband is currently on the iPhone. We have been instructed to not support any one with these things and possible void your warranty of the iPhone for Breaking a contract Rule.
The reason why I am leaking some of this info is cause I don't think its right that we are essentially controlling peoples iPhones.
Its their property once it leaves our retail stores and people need to know what they are getting into.

First, give major credit to Nakodari at Addictive Tips for breaking this story. Second, Apple should just unlock the iPhone rather than forcing people to use AT&T.
Many iPhone users don't like AT&T, so many that they're hungry for a Verizon version of the iPhone. Why Apple is doing this is for explanation, but this time it's apparent they've gone too far. Between the FaceTime privacy problems and the OTA iPhone use updates, Apple has become Big Brother.

inb4: Facetime = more like FacePalm jokes
I love apple. They make good quality products.
This whole iPhone 4 thing isn't really going over so well for Apple.
Like MuscleNerd rightly said, how do AT&T send a message to your phone if you're rocking T-Mobile?
This whole iPhone 4 thing isn't really going over so well for Apple.
To sum up all of their current issues:
-Back glass panel is fragile
-If you cover the lower right part of the phone with your hand it drops calls (the antenna is external)
-Apple monitors your FaceTime calls
-SAR value is now 1.17 (from 0.8)
..And this wouldn't happen on any other phone if it used WiFi to make video calls..?

Isn't the iPhone AT&T only?
Also it says that apple can send the message as well.
..And this wouldn't happen on any other phone if it used WiFi to make video calls..?
Which is why they don't.

You forgot its horrible excuse at multitasking.
You agreed to it when you updated iTunes and when your upgraded to iOS4. AT&T has every right to force the products using THEIR network to conform to their standards, and they have the right to set those standards wherever they so wish. Don't like it? Cancel your contract with AT&T and trash your iPhone. No one is forcing you to using AT&T or an iPhone. By using either, you are agreeing to their terms. This is really a null issue. Sure, it will cause some people to not use their products, but that's their choice. If you're going to bitch about it, then don't use it.
That's because it doesn't multitask, it has a dynamic app launcher.

This is completely true, the bigger issue is that they never informed people that they monitor FaceTime conversations.
Automerge, where are you?

Its a great way of saying you don't want to be in business anymore.
I have AT&T, and they fucked android hard. :(
Yet they are selling millions off dumbass customers.
Yet they are selling millions off dumbass customers.
The only thing iPhone buyers should have done is gotten better sources of information, sadly unbiased sources don't come pre-launch/launch day but usually a couple of weeks later. This makes me think back to the N900 where Nokia themselves stated both the cons and pros. In other words I wouldn't call iPhone users dumbasses, I'd be as uninformed as the iPhone users who say it's the best phone on the market. It fits some people nicely and I don't want to call them morons for that.
I'd much rather get a Nokia N97
Nokia publicly apologized for the N97, it was that bad.
The N97 was a huge flop, get the N8 instead.
Yet they are selling millions off dumbass customers.
blow me
In Candana, you can buy an unlocked phone directly from Apple. Facetime is the same sort of thing as skype, anyone could really end up seeing it.
The reception issues are apparently software based, because some 3G's and 3GS's are getting it too. Cross off that one. The FaceTime monitoring is probably to see if people are actually using it or not, it's not like Apple is doing much with the information anyways..?

They're still infringing on user privacy.
Also, it is not a software issue, Apple themselves said it was due to the metal rim being covered by hands. It isn't a big issue if your hands don't cover the lower left part of the phone, but a lot of people (including apple in their own commercials) do.

Then how come it's happening to 3GS users as well? Apple themselves have said a lot of things.

It is also hapening to the 3GS because it doesn't catch signals the same way as other phones do, it does it in intervals instead of constant sending and recieving. (coupled with AT&T's bad reception)

Dang, that's the first time I've seen a 3GS lose reception that way :v:
What's your point though? That the 3GS has the same hardware issue?
I love apple. They make good quality products.
They even treat their workers with respect and dignity!

Uhh no, that it could be software related because this started happening as soon as 4.0 came around
Nokia publicly apologized for the N97, it was that bad.

I feel stupid now, i thought of the N8 but called it the N97.
the iphone is the best phone

Yep, it's been confirmed that a software fix is coming on monday.
I wish they'd say something about the privacy thing though
This is the largest load of shit I've read in ages. First of all, it's poorly written. Second of all, the only information Apple get is your IP address, so they can connect two users.
Third, the fucking video is encrypted using RTP and SRTP. Apple has created an open standard.
The second part about over the air updates is also bullshit. There's nothing stopping them from doing OTA updates on older iPhones, but they don't because, well they don't. It defeats the whole purpose of having iTunes update critical parts of the phone in a safe environment.
What the fuck - why has the article been posted around so much?
[editline]10:04PM[/editline]
Uhh no, that it could be software related because this started happening as soon as 4.0 came around
No it didn't. Here's an iPhone 3G from 2008 with the same problem.

The iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4 have the antenna in the same area. The band antenna is really a gimmick. It can't help that much.
