[...] an anonymous audience member quoted by The Sun today claimed there were "long, awkward silences" during filming, saying they "couldn't believe how much laughter they had added in” to the broadcast version.
The apparent disparity was noticed by viewers who took to social media to point out a difference between the reaction of those in the audience and the levels of laughter heard

It is probably better than cutting footage out.
I'd surprised if someone didn't knew this already. Joey is good, but he's not enough to run the show by himself.

should have cut the entire series
jeremy, james, and hammond please save us already
It's like it will never leave Matt LeBlanc's career alone.
Would have been funny if they used canned laughter tracks originated from the episodes with the original trio.

They should have a special episode with the entire cast of Friends.
Might aswell turn it into Friends on Wheels.
You know what, just can the show and put on Friends.
The other top gear took a couple seasons to get into a groove, let this show have a run first.
should have cut the entire series
Or brought back the reason Top Gear became a household name. A suspension is far more fitting for what transpired than an outright firing.

Your assuming its going to get past the first season?
People watched Top Gear for two reasons.
The cars, and even more so the hosts that made it special.
If you remove the hosts then you've got another show that barely anyone cares about, like Fifth Gear
I watched it for Hammond, Clarkson and May.
After like season... 4, I couldn't care less about the cars.

the problem is that the episode was barely even about the cars. they tried to shoehorn in the whacky competition antics of the old top gear when the new cast don't even know each other yet
they need to sack evans, give harris and schmitz presenter roles, and go back to a bigger focus on car reviews for a few episodes until they find their own identity and crew dynamic
Am I the only one who found not LeBlanc totally irritating? To me it felt like he was trying to grab the spotlight all the time. And he was annoying. Oh and did I mention that he was totally annoying?

Yeah it's not very fact oriented. Like when they tested the Tesla roadster and claimed it ran out of charge after 50 miles but Tesla had proof that it still had a decent charge and was fully drivable. Hammond wasn't much of a fan of electric cars though and made everything about them and plug in hybrids look awkward.

Fifth Gear has some neat scientific parts though.
Pretty much the only good thing about it.

I didn't even watch it for the cars, the hosts are what made it for me.
I'm not even that interested in cars yet I still watched Top Gear just because of the old trio. They work well together, quite fun to watch. I'll give the new one a try, though I'm not expecting much out of it.

4 brothers.
Fifth gear is the one who went to college, did all the responsible choices in life, and got a job that should really pay more than it does. The over achiever that everybody shoos away and nobody cares about, despite having a lot of merit.
Old UK Top Gear is the brother that started out doing well in middle school, but then didn't finish college when he found out he had an ever rising ability in entertainment and partying. Pretty much the kid that used to study a lot, but then got burned out so much that he changed majors from engineering and went to clown college instead, and got lucky and landed a really good gig in a show.
US Top Gear is the kid who's brothers used to be the big shit in school, particularly the one brother that went on to land a tv show, and has lived in his shadow during school years, but never really ammounted to anything, and was punished by being remembered as "that guy's younger and dorky brother". Pretty much "Stiffler's cousin".
New UK Top Gear is the younger brother that was nearly aborted during pregnancy, wasn't born with any visible defects at first, but just doesn't has all the screws in tight, and got into drugs. The best he could ever hope for is repairing refrigerators or crushing cars at a scrapyard, of which he isn't the boss of.

Hammond did end up writing a favorable review for the Model S

I wonder if Tesla would let them review any of the newer stuff on Grand Tour after that debacle though

Tesla don't give out cars to the media to test. Best they might get is an extended test drive. So if they bought a Tesla then they would be free to do as they please with it.

its actually kind of funny that tesla let top gear US test the model S when it finally came out though because they gave it glowing reviews (which it rightly deserved) and even comented on how range anxiety was almost non existent with the then 200 mile battery capacity

it doesn't sound like they're reviewing cars on the tour. actually the format sounds a lot like top gear US where they'll go through a few sets of cars in one episode on one long road trip. the US show took a couple of seasons to hit on the right dynamics too, look at the first season when it was a carbon copy of top gear UK then later on they scrapped the whole studio and just did road trips for everything which works out well because the US has so many places they can travel to

mmm that's a shame. at least they can still comment on the cars like they did when they were doing road trips in old top gear

...and we open with this long anticipated showdown, of course.

But anyhow, take these such reports with a pinch of salt. Not that I want to defend Top Gear 2.5, but there were lots of reports of studio nonsense which were debunked by audience members prior to airing. That said, there were moments it seemed like they had a gun to their heads to cheer :v:
So is Australian Top Gear the repulsive cousin who everyone tries to avoid at the family reunion?
"Theres an Australian Top Gear?"
Which could be translated into:
Australian Top Gear is the one brother nobody knew about, that shows up mid season to rock the boat, revealing that he's their brother from another mother, you know the adventuress type who can't settle, showing up only for one episode, being somewhat pleasant in some aspects at first, but mostly just an eyesore later, reminding us how despite being a clown, UKTG is elegant and better in every way, even without the exotic factor. Shows up only for one episode, and then leaves after saying he has some bulshit to do back where he lives, to never be seen or heard of again.
Basicaly, the Poochie of Itchy and Scratchy.
(funny enough, I had forgotten that Aussie Gear existed, and then remembered they appeared for an Ashes contest or something vs the original crew, and then pretty much were never on UK Gear again or were ever mentioned. Not that US Gear was even ever on UK Gear, but at least Discovery did run the show here in Portugal. It wasn't THAT bad, but it was pretty much the same as someone telling a joke in a monotone tone and way of speaking, and then expect a crowd of laughter, only to be greeted by silence)
Your assuming its going to get past the first season?
Series sells for a fuckton. In the state the government has put the BBC in they'll be making Top Gear, Doctor Who and Sherlock for as long as they can.
Secondly BBC doesn't cancel stuff for low ratings or public backing away, it famously lets shows limp for a few years in the hope it picks up before cutting it down. Buzzcocks went for years after it had the wheels fly off. Sometimes it pays off, it's one of the best parts of working for the BBC as a creative. They're not ratings driven because ratings don't bring them money as there's no advertising. That and they never tell you what to do, they give you feedback that they insist you CAN follow if you want.
Hmph, not surprised by the canned laughter to be honest. I wouldn't say the crowd looked miserable, but it didn't have the same energy as it had in previous shows. Also, is it just me or did it look a lot more spacious?
