On Tuesday, the discovery of suspicious items prompted the evacuation of the INTO language unit.
A bomb disposal team later performed a controlled explosion on the Town Moor.
Two Russian students, both 18, remain in custody arrested in connection with the incident.
In an email, staff were told a "further suspicious substance" had been found and part of the campus had been closed from 04:30 BST.
Northumbria Police confirmed an area had been cordoned off.
Ch Sup Laura Young said: "Overnight a small amount of a potentially suspicious substance has been recovered from the same location and will be removed from the building in due course.
"The building has temporarily been evacuated as a precaution and EOD - Explosive Ordnance Disposal - unit are in attendance at the university building.

On Tuesday night I actually heard the detonation from about two miles away. This concerns me a lot because I'm attending this university next year :(
Silly Russian millitants. Its Ukraine not UK.
Thought this was my University for a second..
This happened at Aberdeen University a few years back, turned out to be a drug lab in the Halls of Residence, if I recall correctly.
The Russian guy who is behind this is a proper weirdo. Other people have said he walks around with knives attached to his belt or something. Glad he got arrested, he gives off really bad vibes.
Also, this really isn't a big deal. The whole evacuating thing is just standard protocol. This dude wasn't making bombs big enough to take out buildings. This really shouldn't put you off from joining here, it's a great university and this whole mess has been handled really well. I was chatting with the police and everyone is really laid back, because there really isn't some imminent threat. Just some dumb kid who made bombs (smallish ones) at school to show off for some reason??
I heard the bomb go off too, I live right near the moor. It really wasn't that bad lol
Fuck I thought it was my University. I still have one last paper tomorrow no fucking bomb is going to stop me from getting into Med.

Newcastle NSW?
My brother sent a light hearted text about the bomb squad coming in again this morning. He said it was a shame that he still had to go to work :v:
Yeah. I got snaps from my friends, poor guys got woken up at 4am and had to stand outside for 4 hours. Thankfully classes got cancelled for them.

You betcha.
Maitland.

Awesome.
Warners Bay but moving out closer to Uni soon because I don't have a car and screw daily 2 hour bus rides.
Had like 4 emails from the university about this so far, a very small part of the campus has actually been closed off.
And one did a runner to London for some reason (where he's since been caught) :v:
He didn't run. He had graduated and was going back home or something. I think one of the cleaning ladies found the suspicious stuff in his room and alerted police. Either that or he was going to London for a trip. It's not like he planted bombs and tried to escape, lol

It's funny how some people are thinking this is a bigger deal than it actually is (like OP: "This concerns me a lot because I'm attending this university next year") when it is just some dumb kid who thought it'd be cool to make little bombs about as powerful as those dynamite crackers you can buy.
The whole fiasco with bomb squad and police cordoning off the area is just standard protocol :v: To think he's gonna get his student visa revoked and kicked out from uni cause of this, what a bellend.

It's just what I'd seen in the Chronicle, not so much that he planted and ran, just they picked him up there a day after or so. You're right though, pretty dumb mistake and he'll be getting deported rather quickly I imagine.

And they've just removed the cordon around Kings Gate, so all is well now it seems.
A part of me feels bad for the kid, since he passed the year and was going to be moving into his degree. This'll be a really big regret for him in the future. He fucked up a chance to study in the UK.
Cool, Geordies in this thread reppin'.
Sucks though, a lot of people thought it was Haymarket Metro where it was happening.

Toon toon
I'm actually surprised Facepunch has this many Geordies. I thought I was one of two; the other being my real life friend.
Anyway, I went and had a look earlier when I was about town and it generally seems as though the whole thing's been sorted out. I'm just intrigued as to what it was/what the guy(s)'s motive was now.
Facepunch Newcastle meetup when?
Anyway, heard about this while I was in lesson in the college in Gateshead, thought it was going to be something much bigger when I heard about a bomb.
I definitely would do a meetup. I also have a real life friend who browses, so you're 1 of 4 at least. :v:
I live in the area, and I'm actually going to the University for a Survival tour on the 24th :v:
Slightly scared now

We should make some sort of North-East pride sub-forum where we talk about Greggs and lager
