Kou Kou, or Xing Xing in Chinese, died on Thursday of cardiac arrest after failing to recover from an anaesthetic at the Oji Zoo in the western port city of Kobe.
Veterinarians had sedated the 14-year-old animal as part of a program to impregnate his partner Tan Tan, or Shuang Shuang in Chinese, also 14.
The zoo has set up a site for floral tributes and a message board.
Giant pandas, a highly endangered species native to parts of China, are notoriously slow at reproducing in captivity.
The Kobe zoo, after trying in vain to naturally mate the pair from 2003 to 2006, then began trying artificial insemination.
Tan Tan became pregnant in 2007 but the cub was stillborn. She had a live birth the following August, but the cub died three days later.
Pandas don't have sex for pleasure.
Pandas really don't deserve to exist if they can't survive.
I mean how much effort has been placed into their reproduction and yet they fail at it.

One single death caused by humans doesn't represent all the tries to repopulate the Pandas.

they would've survived if we didn't cut their living space.
I'm sorry, but these animals are just not very good at having babies. Two newborn deaths in a row?
I don't think they'll be going extinct for a while, especially if there is some success rate in breeding them.
Pandas really don't deserve to exist if they can't survive.
Well, generally with large animals like bears, "surviving" in a human populated zone refers to them rummaging through your garbage or killing people since people are sort of building on their natural habitat.
Its a bit of an.. obligation to attempt to keep the species going seeing as it was people who drove them to endangerment in the first place.

Nature isn't nice.
Pandas are pretty fucking bad at surviving, but come on man.
They're Pandas. They kick ass.

They didn't die. At least not those two newborn pandas at Spain.
If people keeping invading their forests, why don't they just fight em off with Kung Fu?
Nature isn't nice.
People aren't really confined to nature exactly since our habitats are very complex and are built artificially.
Are you one of those people who thinks humans should just go around trashing everything in our path? It pisses me off when I hear people saying "oohhh humans are destroyin the earth," we're not, but we are destroying what is our natural habitat, and if it weren''t for environmental protection and conservation efforts we'd probably be living in some wasteland devoid of natural life (except raccoons, crows, and cockroaches).
