Authorities have arrested a man in San Francisco, California accused of operating an underground website that allowed users to purchase guns and drugs from around the world using encrypted, digital currency. Ross William Ulbricht, also known as “Dread Pirate Roberts,” was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday over his involvement in the Silk Road website, according to court papers published this week. A sealed complaint dated September 27 was unearthed by security researcher Brian Krebs in which Ulbricht is accused of narcotics trafficking conspiracy, computer hacking conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy
source: http://rt.com/usa/silk-road-bitcoin-shut-650/ yea yea I know RT sucks but whatever
Woah, I thought TOR made stuff like that impossible
Woah, I thought TOR made stuff like that impossible
Wouldn't be surprised if that was what the FBI would be gambling on a lot of people thinking, catch more people out and etc. on their shit. If I had a way to track people on some allegedly untraceable network and I had the same job to do as the FBI, I certainly wouldn't want those people to know they're not invisible.
Woah, I thought TOR made stuff like that impossible
TOR just makes it difficult, expensive and lengthy. Just like bitcoins. They're not foolproof.
If you really want to be safe while browsing illegal content on TOR, you need to be wearing a ski mask and black leather gloves.
What if TOR is a program seeded onto the internet by our governments as a tool to lure in and record the actions of people who want to remain anonymous?
If you really want to be safe while browsing illegal content on TOR, you need to be wearing a ski mask and black leather gloves.
No - you need a balaclava and fancy suit, maybe some sunglasses too

I'm surprised this didn't happen earlier.

now they'll never know who you are

Yes that's the joke, nice work.
aw man you could get cheap cigarettes there, RIP
I'm surprised this didn't happen earlier.
i loved how the project (i think it was the project) actually had a story on this but it seemed more like a plug than an advisory
Where will I spend my bitcoins now?
Also on the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24373759#TWEET908345
The FBI has also seized approximately $3.6m (£2,2m) worth of bitcoins - a virtual currency.
:o
Woah, I thought TOR made stuff like that impossible
not if the FBI runs enough TOR nodes
Durgs subforum is going to go nuts when they hear this news
GG FBI, you just killed the most responsible and safest way to obtain legitimate drugs uncut. Fucking idiots.
What exactly does he get charged with? It's not like he was ever in possession of anything, he just ran a marketplace. Sort of the same problem as with charging torrent site owners.
jesus fucking christ
TOR just makes it difficult, expensive and lengthy. Just like bitcoins. They're not foolproof.
Great point Too bad they didn't catch him through TOR and the website, they literally caught him in the US thanks to a combonation of factors such as a snafu with trying to hire a hitman, and looking at domain registration history they were able to pin the creator's identity and as such track him down and through him shut the website down He basically got cocky with recent interviews and stuff, and while he remained anonymous it couldn't be kept up with him being in the US on top of Silk Road's early versions being connected to him on top of some bullcrap involving a hitman he tried to hire.
yeah fuck it
A great win for the war on drugs.
It was going to happen at some point but fuck sake its a real fucking shame :(
At least there's Atlantis (I think that's what it was called).
What crimes exactly were he committing? That's like arresting the founder of eBay for a user selling something illegal. But then again, why am I even questioning the way things are run at this point? Arbitrary laws are enforced with inane amounts of effort.
At least there's Atlantis (I think that's what it was called).
nope, it was a scam, the owner closed it down and ran away with the bitcoins theres BMR for now
At least there's Atlantis (I think that's what it was called).
Shut down last week.
The man ran silkroad, I doubt that.
Couldn't he just publicly announce the bitcoin code, therefore all the currency would logically be stolen up overnight and then there would be absolutely no proof against him? "millions worth of bitcoins" is literally just saying there is a notepad file somewhere with some text in it.
A great win for the war on drugs.
Nope, now there will be more street violence because more people have to hit the streets.
