Calif. carjacking suspect brandishes gun, is shot
LOS ANGELES — An armed carjacking suspect who had led police on an odd, slow-speed chase through the streets of Los Angeles was shot and killed at a gas station in the Koreatown section of LA. The suspect had stopped the vehicle and “pulled out his revolver and pointed it at people inside the store,” said LAPD Cmdr. Andy Smith in an article posted on the website of the LA Times.
A video of the confrontation captured by a TV news helicopter shows the decisive action taken by LAPD officers who put multiple rounds into the stolen older-model Saturn vehicle. A bystander is seen diving for cover between a nearby car and the gas pumps.
The suspect was killed, the bystander uninjured, and all officers involved were safe following the incident. The gunman has not yet been identified, but police did say a revolver was recovered from inside the stolen vehicle.
I can hear the moralists already. He brandished a gun, he knew the risks.
What did he think would happen?
If he did show a gun and threaten civilians, or the police for that matter, then I think what happened is totally justified, but something seems sort of fishy. Why would he point it at the customers in the store? It just seems odd, and the footage is hardly conclusive.
Why didn't they use tazers????
THEY TOOK THIS YOUNG MANS LIFE

Suicide by cop?
Anyone who swings a loaded gun around has absolutely no right to complain about the consequences, simple as that.
You guys didn't watch it live, he was driving around for miles.
Different video that's not slow-mo and slightly better quality.

Because some people just don't give a shit.
Wow, that's just sad seeing a life get taken away in live-video.
Wow.... I have morals but damn, that's just sad no matter if they did brandish a gun. It's still disturbing to see a life get taken away live.

He knew what was coming, nobody is dumb enough to think they'll survive if they wave a loaded gun to police officers that's just common sense.
In times like these, taking a life away has to be done to make the community safer.
That guy pumping gas had some poor timing there.
police brutality
Sure, he brandished a gun and forced the cops to do what they had to d- oh wait, look, nearby gas pumps.
I can see where this is going:

Wow, how could cops fail to notice something that can easily explode and cause a huge fire?
Its a good thing they had the suspect bottlenecked between the gas pumps and in a line of fire that wasnt going to potentially blow up the gas pumps.
The guy with the gun didn't actually just brandish the gun, he actually shot first. He shot out of the window of the car into the air, and then the police started firing.

Because that's totally how it works.

Mythbusters did a special on this
REVISITED: A gas tank will explode when shot by a bullet. (From Episode 15)
busted
It has already been proven that when shot by a normal bullet a gasoline tank will not explode. However, if a gasoline tank is shot by a tracer round from a great enough distance so that the round can ignite with air friction, it will cause the gasoline to catch fire. By the time this happened the tank was so riddled with bullets (from previous tracers that were fired too close to ignite) that there was no contained pressure, but the MythBusters surmised that had the tank been properly enclosed, it may have exploded; but overall it remains extremely improbable.

Yes but in a petrol station where petrol is on the ground and no doubt there'd be trails of it leading to the pumps, there is a hazard. Otherwise there would be no signs around saying 'no smoking', 'no open flames' etc.
At best you could start a small fire and make a distraction but Gas Stations have excellent anti-fire mechanisms

You can't really ignite gasoline with normal bullets.
I'm pretty sure the police don't use incendiary rounds.

Petrol?
Don't you mean Diesel fuel? I think Diesel fuel is even harder to ignite because it doesn't release vapors unlike Gasoline.

That's because of the open flames igniting fumes in the air from open petrol tanks
The spark from a ricocheting bullet won't instantly cause an entire petrol station to explode

Petrol is what the rest of the world calls gasoline

Liquid petrol doesn't ignite at all. The fumes are what ignites.
It can feed a fire, but it can't start a fire.

It's not that easy. The possession of a gun itself is dangerous enough - there are choices which have to be taken, even though they're hard decisions. I totally understand it when the cops came to the conclusion to shoot him before they or anyone else get shot.
It's sad how in the US suspects get killed so much more easily. This one was armed with a gun though so it's a bit different.
In Finland, probably in other similar countries too, cops would NEVER shoot a knife wielding suspect to death even if he was drunk/reckless against the cops.
