What's better than having one team of ranger team up with another? How about all of them teaming up? That's right folks, your prayers have finally been answered. Along with Toonami reutnring (it's currently airing Sautrdays on Cartoon Network), Saban Brands has announced that the 2013 season of Power Rangers will be the 20th anniversary season based on the 35th anniversary Super Sentai, Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger. This season will see some of your favorite rangers back in action, mainly to train the new team. Before you dismiss this as an april fools joke, how about a history lesson?
Power Rangers is based on Super Sentai. Super Sentai has been running for 36 years as of now, whereas Power Rangers has been running for 20. Because of the way Power Rangers adaptations are held - the respective season is aired in Japan, and then adapted in America a year later - Power Rangers used to be one year behind, but because of the transition from Disney back to Saban, Power Rangers is now three years behind. This lag in power (corny, I know), arguably will allow Saban more time to construct a better season from the respective Sentai season. What makes next year's adaptation especially tricky is the fact that they are re-filming the Legend War sequence - presuably along with a lot of other scenes - that depict the remaining 16 sentai season that America never formally adapted. How this will affect Pirate Ranger's run versus Gokaiger's, is anybody's guess, but hopefully it'll be just as good! For a sneak peak of what's to come - along with the press release - hit the jump!
LOS ANGELES (March 31, 2012) Coming in 2013, Nickelodeon, the worldwide leader in entertainment for kids, will introduce audiences to the newest incarnation in the Power Rangers franchise with the action-packed premiere of Mighty Morphin’ Pirate Rangers. Combining thrilling storylines, dynamic action, and charming comedy, Mighty Morphin’ Pirate Rangers will look to celebrate the franchise’s iconic 20th anniversary like only Nickelodeon and Saban Brands can deliver. The all new series will feature a brand new cast of Rangers, an evil force of villains like never seen before, and an entirely new set of Zords and arsenal. In order to help celebrate the remarkable 20th anniversary milestone, faces familiar to the Power Rangers brand will also make appearances as characters that long-time fans can identify and familiarize with.
“We are very excited to be bringing this incredible anniversary season to Nickelodeon audiences and its affiliates. Power Rangers has been a pop culture icon that has withstood the test of time, and we are excited to continue its strong messages of friendship and teamwork in this all new season,” said Pete Danielsen, Executive Vice President, Programming, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group. “This brand new season will truly be something special for both the longtime fans and the new generation of kids.”
Mighty Morphin’ Pirate Rangers introduces five brand new teens who are selected to become Pirate Rangers based on their masterful expertise in their respective fields. Together, they must unite as a team to battle against the evil Space Empire led by Commander Gil. However, in order to do so, they will need to scour the planet in search of the Mega Force Keys, powerful weaponry that allows them to harness the power of former Ranger teams.
The Pirate Rangers are: Nathan, the Red Ranger and outgoing team leader; Jacob, the Blue Ranger and loyal teammate; Aiden, the Green Ranger and brains behind the operation; Abbey, the Yellow Ranger and tomboy with a bit of an attitude; and Kayla, the Pink Ranger and “young sister” of the group. Together, the team will unite under the lead of their experienced mentor, Justin Stewart (portrayed by Blake Foster), a veteran Ranger from long ago who returns to renew his stance in the fight against evil.
“This is an exciting time for Saban Brands, as well as Power Rangers fans around the world. We are so excited to introduce this brand new series and Nickelodeon is the perfect platform to showcase it,” said Elie Dekel, President of Saban Brands. “We think new fans will be hooked in by the exhilarating action, and older fans will enjoy seeing familiar faces return to the fold.”
Alongside Blake Foster, older fans can also expect to see several other returning cast members from previous seasons, including Mike Ginn (Gem / Power Rangers: R.P.M), Jason Smith (Casey / Power Rangers: Jungle Fury), Johnny Yong Bosch (Adam / Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers), Paul Schrier (Bulk), and fan-favorite Jason David Frank (Tommy Oliver) among others.
“This is the type of season that hardcore Power Rangers fans have been asking for,” said Blake Foster, one of several returning cast members. “For me, it’s just an honor to be back. I loved being the Blue Ranger in Power Rangers Turbo and it’s almost a dream come true to return 15 years later in a mentor role. For the fans, there will definitely be a few big surprises so they should stayed tuned. And who knows, maybe we haven’t seen the last of Justin Stewart in a Ranger uniform.”
Produced by Saban Brand LLC and Power Rangers Productions Ltd, Mighty Morphin’ Pirate Rangers is Executive Produced by Jonathan Tzachor. Following its introduction in 1993, Power Rangers quickly became the most watched children’s television program in the United States. Emphasizing the importance of teamwork, responsibility and helping others by following the adventures of a group of ordinary young people who “morphed” into superheroes, the series was seen in more than 60 countries and translated into numerous languages. It rose to rank as the #1 boys brand in the world from 1993-97, based on toy sales and television ratings. To date, Power Rangers licensed products and promotions have generated well over $5 billion in retail sales worldwide. Holy shit toonami is coming back.
MY BODY IS READY
Thought this was April Fool's until I saw the date.
So they're skipping Goseiger? Makes you wonder how they're going to handle the tons of Sentai seasons that were made before Power Rangers was created.

They're re-filming the legend war, so they're probably re-filming anything with pre-zyu stuff too....Is it weird that Im more surprised that somebody on facepunch watches sentai than i am the weird title of the season?

Eh, we've got dumber fandoms. Besides, they tend to range in seriousness, from the extremely goofy, to the incredibly dark and depressing. Oh god, Jetman. Goofy title, goofy idea, incredibly depressing story.

[editline]1st April 2012[/editline]
Then agian if he's involved he already knows :v:
Gotta say, the Pirate costumes don't look too bad. Tickles my balls a little. Compared to 95% of the previous ones at least.
Would of preferred a new series of the American version of Kamen Rider. Wouldn't mind Kabuto or W getting an american version.
Also FUCK YES Toonami's back.
Thought this was April Fool's until I saw the date.
Time zones can be a bitch, Google for example did its silliness March 31st too
As someone who lives in a different country, what exactly is Toonami?
I know it has something to do with Steve Blum, but that's all really.
We had toonami here in South East Asia Cartoon Network but it wasn't really much.
They never had a lot of shows and they didn't even gave a goodbye like the american one.(we also don't have train/clock face tom)
How can they have ever ranger ever? Half of them just upgraded as the program went on.

Here's hoping they bring over Navi from the sentai to this. That little robo parrot was awesome.
I wish MXC was still being filmed. A themed episode would be perfect.
http://www.toonamiaftermath.com/ Boom Toonami.
