Switch out the console icons; more general "tech platform" tags?
47 replies, posted
Now that we're going into Gen8 and the Wii, PS3, and 360 are going into "last gen," I'd say it's time to update the post icons for threads. Rather than going the obvious route of Wii U/PS4/One, though, I'd rather us just see tags for Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft to cover stuff like 3DS, Vita, or Windows as well and possibly add in stuff like Apple, Linux, or Google/Android tags to cover all the big tech platforms at the moment.
Hell, I'd even make some if you like.

Haha, updating the post icons?
That would make far too much sense.

Why the SSB logo for Nintendo? Surely a circled N would work better?
I miss ask us about the forums.
Nintendo doesn't exactly have an "icon" like the others in terms of something abstract that can fit in a square area and communicate the brand without using the actual name, at least not officially. Even Google incorporates that lowercase "g" as an icon every now and then.
I've always seen the Smash emblem as a de-facto logo for Nintendo due to the series incorporating all their franchises - or at least a vast majority of them - and being essentially "the Nintendo fighter" instead of that of just any one IP. And I think it looks cooler and more iconic than just a circled "N" and isn't as awkward-looking when right next to the actual Nintendo wordmark. It's also more distinctive: something like Ⓝ is kinda generic and you see it in other places (I think they're used on packaging) but the Smash emblem is unmistakable and you'll only ever see it come up in something related to Nintendo. So yeah, that's a bit of personal flair but I don't think many would argue (and it's not the first time I've done it either.)
Personally, I think they should just make it their logo outright, but in any case that's why I put it there.
or maybe the circle N is too hard for you?
you can try the oval shape circle around the word Nintendo(just type nintendo in google image, yull see it)
plus i think the icon should be a lil bit more colorful/glossy
btw that thread you linked is very impressive for someone who posts little

They look nice but imo they dont fit in with the other icons.

They don't follow a strict style but they all have the same look. I don't really know how to describe it. They are busy and childish and not minimalistic like the icons OP made.

That's their wordmark, not an icon, plus it's already on the tag (sans capsule; it looked too noisy with it and it would either partially cover the icon or be too small to make out the name clearly.) The idea for the tags is to have both the wordmark and an icon for a standardized look. As for the hat, it's not a bad idea but that's the Club Nintendo icon. Plus the identifying info like the bill shape and the M are on the left which would be cut off in this tag style, and it only implies the Mario series instead of Nintendo as a whole. I did think of having just Mario's M, but again: same principle.
I don't want to sound stubborn - I appreciate the feedback, seriously - but I did consider all that and decided the Smash emblem and non-encapsulated wordmark looked best. It's the cleanest look I could muster.
I mean, I could try some of those later (I'm not on my main computer at the moment) but yeah. I didn't think a big N or M next to the word Nintendo looked good.
I didn't think anybody really cared about the thread tags, they're just sort of there for flavour.
Let's just steal more from SA
SA uses the same board system as we do... ?

Same system, different version. We're on a highly modified version of VB4, they're on 2.2.9.

A heavily modified version of 2.2.9, that is.
I might make some draft designs on all the icons seeing as I'm on exam block and i've got nothing better to do with my life
[editline]16th June 2013[/editline]
okay so i made some drafts for the first column of the posticon list, got rid of the shit gradients and made it simple as possible, request's triangles look odd, what do you guys think though?

I didn't actually know what it was until you pointed it out. Clearly I'm not much of a Nintendo gamer.
just keep the old ones. I hate change
I think the whole set needs to be remade. Half of them are unnecessary, they look shit and the less we have in common with SA, the better.
Well, I already started with a consistent theme in these icons, maybe I can do the rest?
Would be a good time to reorganize the tag system in general if we were to redo all the tags, though.

You don't think they're readable? I tried to get the AA as good as possible and I thought they came out pretty coherent.
Get N or get out.
