Funnily enough there was no previous thread on this...

Blackle simply runs on the idea of replacing the white colour scheme on the Google homepage and instead using a black background as the name suggests. The reason for this is that it uses less energy and a blog post (from 2007) stating the effects of the use of Blackle by everybody show how much energy it could save.
The Blog Post: Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year
As noted, an all white web page uses about 74 watts to display, while an all black page uses only 59 watts. I thought I would do a little math and see what could be saved by moving a high volume site to the black format.
Take at look at Google, who gets about 200 million queries a day. Let's assume each query is displayed for about 10 seconds; that means Google is running for about 550,000 hours every day on some desktop. Assuming that users run Google in full screen mode, the shift to a black background [on a CRT monitor! mjo] will save a total of 15 (74-59) watts. That turns into a global savings of 8.3 Megawatt-hours per day, or about 3000 Megawatt-hours a year. Now take into account that about 25 percent of the monitors in the world are CRTs, and at 10 cents a kilowatt-hour, that's $75,000, a goodly amount of energy and dollars for changing a few color codes.
Sure, go ahead, rate me late, but I'm glad to make some of you aware on how you can do your bit for the environment. :-)
Too bad black color takes just as much to render as white one.
I hate dark websites
This is REALLY, REALLY OLD. I was using this years ago. I don't use it though, since it doesn't have image search. And pretty much all of us have the toolbar thing.

Damn right :clint:
Blackle is a load of rubbish. Displays other than CRTs, which not too many people have these days, use more energy transitioning the individual cells between on-off states rather than by being a particular colour.
I don't know why but I think this was used in PlayStation Homes' Xi quiz...I never found it too good really. The colour scheme just dulled it too much.
Blackle utterly fails.
The most interesting aspect we found was that of the LCD monitors we tested of size 22-inches or less, all showed an increase in power consumption using Blackle. Beyond the 22-inch mark however, five of the six models showed a fractional decrease in power consumption when using Blackle,
except the ViewSonic VX2835wm, which showed a 2.2-watt increase.
is anyone up for creating a google wich background flashes with different colors and we can have statistics about how many watt hours we've drained?
Tried this once didn't give any half decent search results.
I'm gonna start using this, I like black web pages more than white ones. Give off less light, y'know?
EDIT
Nevermind, appears that people aren't getting good results. I'll favorite it though, if I ever feel like not using Google.
The site looks awful it needs a extreme edition makeover
It makes my porn search results look slimming.
It's not any more eco friendly because regardless of whether the pixels are black or white, they're still being used, which requires power output and doesn't make much of a difference.

On an LCD monitor, not a CRT monitor.

Prove it.
How much time do you actually spend looking at google?

You've gotta be shitting me.
"HURR WHIET TAKES MOAR SPACE THAN BLACK I'M SAVING DEE ENVIROMENT :hurr:"
Only a complete moron would actually believe this, conveniently the owners of this website forgot to skip the part about making more revenue from getting people to use their engine instead of google :downs:
On an LCD monitor, not a CRT monitor.
Odds are that more than half the people on here use LCD screens over CRT, and that is a conservative estimate. So for Facepunch, this has no effect.

Not to mention that this article was wrote in 2007. Even now, the number of people using old CRT monitors is going to be drastically lower. Three years down the road CRT's will be a thing of the past. They aren't even sold as most stores now.
I couldn't find a CRT on the high street five years ago when I last bought a new machine, let alone now.
Blackle + DWM = Awesome (Yet not practical)

Or we just keep using google and not give a shit about the tiny amount were going to save.
I already turned the brightness on my monitor to zero. That is the biggest energy saver isn't it?
edit: not using this though, I'll listen to the guys who say black is no better than white.
Because 750 megawatt hours a year makes all the difference in the world.
I can see the Ozone hole getting smaller already...
Edit: Corrected retardation.
So?
Screw the environment. The Earth will kill us all when it feels like it, and there's nothing we can do to stop it. And don't say it can't. Hurricanes, tsunami's, earthquakes, volcanoes, ect. ect. ect. = proof & point.
Actually black is more relaxing than white for the eyes, or atleast, for my eyes, so I guess I'll be using this.
