Hollywood is helping the military build its Iron Man suit

The US military isn't keeping its interest in building an Iron Man suit a secret, and on Friday, The Wall Street Journal published new details on the work being done to create one. The government's plans for the suit, known as TALOS, are straight out of science fiction: it wants the suit to have a weapon, provide bullet protection, monitor vitals, and give its wearer superhuman strength and perception. To make that, it's called on the private sector to help, with big names like Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, and Raytheon reportedly getting involved.
Smaller companies have stepped in too, however, including some from unusual sectors and some taking unusual approaches. Most notably, special effects maker Legacy Effects — which actually created the Iron Man suit for the movies — has become involved, helping to design and 3D print prototypes, according to the Journal. Legacy itself is helping on behalf of Ekso Bionics, an exoskeleton creator, and admits that what it's doing here is a big change. "When you're doing something for a movie it is all make-believe," Legacy founder Lindsay MacGowan tells the Journal. "Whereas, for the military, that's really not going to be the case."
Creating an exoskeleton that can handle everything the military has in mind for the suit has become one of the biggest hurdles, and it's there that the Journal reports that companies are branching out. One group has begun studying sumo wrestlers to determine how they manage to move around with such agility in spite of their weight. Researchers have also been studying insect's exoskeletons to see how they maintain their strength.
It must be pretty cool when you suddenly get a military contract.
Talos the mighty! Talos the unerring! Talos the unassailable! To you we give praise!
Will they name it the Freedom Armor?
Will they integrate the sunshine and rainbows power supply that anything of this nature requires or will it just run on a form of stored unicorn tears???
Praise mighty Talos!

If Tony Stark could build the prototype in a cave, I'm pretty sure that the designers will find a way, or else. :v:
Bring Bethesda in for consultations on the visual design near the end stages, it is their name afterall. :v:
all hail the Omnissiah
from the rage of the beast Iron protect us
But isn't Putin already the Crimson Dynamo?

It runs on the wearers will to kill commies and terrorists!
but talos was a giant man of bronze not of iron jeez military get your historical mythology shit together
but talos was a giant man of bronze not of iron jeez military get your historical mythology shit together
but "Bronze Man" doesn't sound as metal
but "Bronze Man" doesn't sound as metal
Then everybody goes around calling it 'Tin Man' for laughs.

My bet is on Li-ion batteries and uptime of 30 minutes of slow waddling about.
Wheel them in on a truck, they hop off, trundle about for twenty thirty minutes, then you load their limp selves onto the truck again and wheel them off to safety for recharging and/or triage because they sure as hell gonna take SOME injuries if something hits them.
The only way I really expect an exoskeleton to work power-to-weight-wise in the next few decades is having a sort of hybrid diesel-electric or gas-electric generator to meet power to weight ratios like the Boston Dynamics BigDog and variants have.
Which, while a disadvantage in combat, would have a profound psychological effect to the poor hadji who wakes up to the noise of ten roaring american V-8s with accompanying thud-thuds of the closing footsteps of men in two-ton armored suits nearing his door.

Well in that similarity, the first improvised exosuit's going to be a lot like the first tanks, they'll have a profound psychological effect but will need tuning up to stand out on their own as a military asset.

If you wanna go the full Iron Man hog, just name it the Iron Patriot.
Tech isn't there yet. Closest we will get is something like Exoskeletons in STALKER, just enclosed.
Tech won't be there yet for another hundred years or more, really. First we need a massive power source (Iron Man used fusion, we can't even get a 3 story building sized reactor working well, let alone a fist sized one), then we need to either bring down the mobility by a tonne or invent a way to negate momentum, because the armour might survive hitting a concrete block (or being hit by high calibre guns) at more than 10kph, but the guy inside will turn to jam, which will take probably 500+ years, if ever.
Now normal powered armour suits that walk about and give superhuman strength will be doable sooner. Nuclear batteries maybe.

I expect they'll be more like Big Daddy's than Iron man.
When ever I think of an Iron Man suit that might be viable and possible to build, I always think of the Iron Monger's armour.
It seemed more down to Earth in the design aspects.

talos is a figure in greek mythology, bethesda doesn't own the name

You're really underestimating science. We've done incredible things in just 100 years. From slow locomotive trains we've gone to highly manoeuvrable supersonic jets. From simple lever action rifles we've gone to fully automatic weapons capable of unbelievable fire rates. We've treated diseases that were a death sentence. A lot can happen in even just 20 years. Take a look at something more personal. Did you have a phone capable of starting a high quality video conversation with anyone in the world on demand, wherever you are, 20 years ago?
Fuck that, how about we create an organization that will stop aliens in the upcoming year

To stop aliens, there first have to be aliens.

Spess Marines are about the only ones who can wear 'em without getting crushed like nuts.
