• New Zealand has voted to keep the current flag in the second flag referendum. • The current flag won by 56.6 per cent to 43.2 per cent • More than 2.1 million Kiwis voted • Prime Minister John Key: "Use it, embrace it and, more importantly, be proud of it." • Deputy PM Bill English: "We should all embrace that decision" • RSA: "The people have spoken" • Change the Flag campaign: "We accept the majority view" New Zealand's flag will not change, a referendum has decided. The existing national flag won 56.6 per cent of the vote, compared to 43.2 per cent for the silver fern flag. The total number of votes received was 2,124,507 - a turnout of 67.3 per cent.
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11611333
Well that sucks. The other one looked so nice.
I must say, I am hugely disappointed.
People will change the flag when its needed to be changed, not just a government agenda.
I must say, I am hugely disappointed.
Nah, I think the general opinion (or at least, my opinion ha) is that the silver fern is a sports logo and not a whole lot more. You only see it on the All Blacks' marketing material and on clothes in tourist shops. It doesn't belong on a non-corporate flag.
Well done, Kiwis. Have to say I agree with the decision.

I hoped that other countries would follow this example.

The proposed flag did have a corporate feel to it.
I would've loved if Red Peak came out as the other option, but as it stands I'd rather have this flag than the vexillological nightmare a fern would be.
I still think that as a Brit you should get a new flag. Canada, the UK and the US have very recognisable flags and we definitely do well from them. New Zealand just doesn't.
Seems weird that you still have our flag on your flag, given you have been independent for a while now.
Shame about your Australia-junior flag. It's about time you guys stop dodging the issue though and become another state. Australia will grow larger.
People will change the flag when its needed to be changed, not just a government agenda.
I think it's more likely that'll change when all the old people are dead and NZ moves forward by having a flag that doesnt have the union jack on it. It feels dated and irrelevant tbh.

All my friends and myself (read: late-teens to early-twenties) all agree that we would've voted for a new flag if it wasn't this design that was up for grabs.
Well I'm not gonna start hovering over your flag every time so I'm gonna keep thinking you are all Australians. I can see why you don't want to change your flag though.
Their current flag is ugly as shit but I'm not a fan of the new design either
Their current flag is ugly as shit but I'm not a fan of the new design either
Not really ugly, just boring and unrecognisable.
Not really ugly, just boring and unrecognisable.
too much australia
The proposed new flags all looked awful. I like the current one better. Plus, given it's so similar to Australia's flag, it's a reminder that NZ is our twin lmao
The only problem with the NZ flag is that whenever there's a NZ poster on facepunch or /int/ I think they're Australian. [editline]24th March 2016[/editline] Atleast change the shade of blue or something like god damn
welcome BACK TO THE FOLD BROTHERS REMEMBER: YOU'RE HERE FOREVER
I always liked the historical ties that Australia and NZ's flag had, even though I'm still bothered that Hawaii's flag has the union jack on it and want it gone immediately :v:
New zeland just knows if they leave our empire we will take them back with an iron fist
New zeland just knows if they leave our empire we will take them back with an iron fist
Basically that, a lot of places that the Empire has given back or forced to release have basically failed. South Africa, America, etc are the perfect examples.
Wait, what?
Just a reference to the Empire basically scaring America away from any sort of large government, referring to using different measurements, road usage etc.
Just a reference to the Empire basically scaring America away from any sort of large government, referring to using different measurements, road usage etc.
Wouldn't say the current UK is any better when it comes to measurements, fucking stones lmao.
Wouldn't say the current UK is any better when it comes to measurements, fucking stones lmao.
actually we tend to use both weights are done in KG and LB/stone, almost everything lists both and if it doesn't, it lists in metric unless it's a specific item that allows imperial
