Microsoft reportedly installing Windows 10 without consent -- again
We all know that Microsoft is using increasingly aggressive -- and desperate -- tactics to get people to upgrade to its newest operating system. A month ago it switched the update status from 'optional' to 'recommended', and last week it snuck Windows 10 advertising into a security patch.
So what dirty trick is next? Well, according to Reddit, it’s installing the OS without user consent -- and without much warning -- and hiding the decline button to make it much harder to abort the process.
One Redditor describes the situation like this:
Yep, went afk and saw this message box that said something like "Your update is ready! Restarting and installing in 13 minutes". If I made myself a meal or watched TV, I would have had Windows 10. Oh, and the best part is how they hid the "Decline" button in the more info button.
Another user says:
Yep this happened to me this morning. Working and all of a sudden Windows closed all my programs, logged me out and started the upgrade. I quickly shut down my computer and was able to stop it but my son wasn't so lucky. Same thing happened to him today.
It is very concerning that they have this kind of access to push these updates without our consent. What else is being pushed through our computers or being pulled off in the background without us knowing?
It’s likely, of course, that these unwanted installations have happened due to Windows 10 now being a recommended update. If your system is set to install all recommended updates -- y’know, for security purposes -- then you’ll receive Windows 10.
Who knows, maybe is Microsoft would focus more on fixing the hardware incompatibilities with older stuff instead of toying around like this, more folks would switch
I turned off all updating, and plan on moving to Arch by the end of June.
This is just malicious bullshit. I don't want Windows 10. Stop trying to switch me over to it.
Microsoft's doing a real good job showing just how sleazy they are, this is Grade-A shitty behavior that honestly doesn't even need to be done if Windows 10 was actually that good (and if it was good, why are they so desperate to push it?)

That and the radical tablet-friendly interface maybe only works well on tablets but feels half-assed on desktops and non-touchscreen laptops.
The two very things still used heavily by prosumers and by companies.
TBH should've made a Windows 7+ version, with the under-the-hood and real security (not the nagging nannying and forced driver updates) improvements of 10, but with a polished version of the 7 UI, and a heavy focus on backwards compatibility.
Time for them to realize a OS is a tool, not a lifestyle.
Windows 10 installed itself for me after a boot time scan that I set avast to run over night while I slept a couple months ago. I was miffed initially but now I don't even care since it works just fine and hasn't made my computer literally explode despite popular worries.
Oh boy can't wait for another 70 page argument thread where we end up at the same conclusion.
Well then, let's get it over with quickly. "You don't have any reason not to want it but if you really don't anyway you shouldn't be forced to and this is shoddy business practices." There.

Tablet mode doesn't even work well on my Surface, and that's a Microsoft branded product.
Windows 8 was perfect for tablets, and if they had some way of making that work alongside the desktop mode that would be great, but instead we get some weird half-assed hybrid of a tablet mode.
Still a good job that my machine's got weird issues with updating. I have no idea what's going on, maybe it's to do with me having multiple hard-drives, and it's probably something that I really oughta fix, but it means it can't force my OS to shift over to 10.

Just grab the GWX Control Panel and follow the instructions, it actively keeps Windows 10 from getting on your computer and deletes all the stuff that's already on it. I've been using it and I haven't seen a single thing related to Windows 10 on this computer since.
I think the dedication for people NOT to move to Win10 is even funnier.

1. The shitty incompatiblities happening and breaking computers.
2. The Privacy Debacle.
3. People don't want to change.
I'm just worried this is gonna effect us at work, seeing as Microsoft are pushing messages to tell users to let ask us to upgrade them to Windows 10 :V
My wireless adapter for my desktop is just barely working with Windows 10, it randomly breaks itself and forces a restart of the computer for me to even be able to open the network settings.

I have the icon on my computer at work, I'm just waiting for the day when I'm in the middle of a call and it pops up and starts to update while I'm trying to do work.

You're on google chrome. You can't seriously talk about "PRIVACY" while on GOOGLE CHROME.
Like seriously. Think about it.
And as a W10 user, I still haven't run into anything incompatible.

While you're at it, find definition for hypocrite
There is no reason to not move over to Windows 10.
When I tried to install windows 10 last time it nearly fried my shitty hard drive.
When I tried to install windows 10 last time it nearly fried my shitty hard drive.
I'm fairly certain it did actually kill one of my hard drives, it failed to boot one day after an update.
That's the day I bought an SSD though, so good stuff came from it.

If you don't mind broken hardware/software, or the UI, or having the NSA's fist buried deep in your rectum, etc

fair example of someone not knowing what they are even talking about
If you don't mind broken hardware/software, or the UI, or having the NSA's fist buried deep in your rectum, etc
The UI is basically windows 7, with two different "Settings" menu's for everything, one Metro, one old school.
It's silly, but hardly a problem, and hardly worse than 7 in any way.
NSA's fist is buried up all our rectums regardless, if you're online, the NSA knows everything about you
Broken hardware and software seems to be a vast minority.
If you don't mind broken hardware/software, or the UI, or having the NSA's fist buried deep in your rectum, etc
The thing is, the NSA is already in all of our systems. They already have the tools to just crack your computer with or without Windows 10.
I mean really, send an E-mail its likely to bounce out of the US where the NSA ( that I know of) snatches a copy of.
Your hardware has already been gimped to allow the spy agencies in the world to crack open, even before you got your hands on it. Even the software you have
has likely already been broken into before, and if not the services that made those softwares already collabs with the NSA and others.
If you're worried about NSA, Windows version is not what you should concern yourself about.
Windows 10 is great I don't see why anyone wouldn't want it.
fair example of someone not knowing what they are even talking about
How so?
The UI is basically windows 7, with two different "Settings" menu's for everything, one Metro, one old school.
No, it's not. Not at all.
The start menu has been replaced, the file explorer has been replaced, etc. The design language employed in Metro is vastly different than Aero.
NSA's fist is buried up all our rectums regardless, if you're online, the NSA knows everything about you
There's a difference between the NSA collecting your Google history and the NSA knowing everything you do at the OS level.
Broken hardware and software seems to be a vast minority.
I'm a member of a vast minority then, because I've encountered both.

look at my OS, I have windows 10 since it came out... my brother actually had windows 10 Blue screen all the time because it killed a wi-fi adapter driver (which ended up damaging the whole component.)
