The spokesman said he did not know whether there was any fighting before Gbagbo's surrender.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/blog/2011/apr/11/ivory-coast-gbagbo-arrested-live-updates A rush from the AFP:
ABIDJAN (AFP) - Troops loyal to Ivory Coast leader Alassane Ouattara captured his besieged rival Laurent Gbagbo in Abidjan on Monday, France's ambassador Jean-Marc Simon told AFP. "Laurent Gbagbo was arrested by the Republican Forces of Ivory Coast, and taken to the Golf Hotel," he said, referring to the internationally-recognised president's fortified base camp in the city. Earlier, witnesses had reported seeing pro-Ouattara forces entering Gbagbo's besieged residential compound, while French and UN armoured vehicles deployed on a road leading to the complex.
http://www.afp.com/afpcom/en/taglibrary/activity/web/multimedia/afp-online-news A rush from the BBC:
Ivory Coast: Gbagbo held after French troops move in Mr Gbagbo had been refusing to cede power Ivory Coast leader Laurent Gbagbo has been detained, after being snatched from his besieged residence in the country's main city, Abidjan. News that he was being held was broken by a Gbagbo aide and confirmed by France's ambassador and forces loyal to his rival Alassane Ouattara. French tanks earlier advanced on the presidential residence in Abidjan. Mr Gbagbo has been refusing to cede power to Mr Ouattara after losing November's presidential election. "Gbagbo has been arrested by French special forces in his residence and has been handed over to the rebel leaders," an aide to Mr Gbagbo, Toussaint Alain, told Reuters news agency from Paris. There were conflicting accounts about how Mr Gbagbo had been captured, with France's ambassador saying he had been taken by troops loyal to Mr Ouattara. A spokesman for Mr Ouattara told Reuters that Mr Gbagbo had been taken to the city's Golf Hotel, where Mr Ouattara himself has been staying. UN peacekeepers have accused Gbabgo forces of endangering the civilian population, and had asked French troops in Ivory Coast to act against the defiant leader's heavy weapons.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-13039825 Stability's still far off regardless of what happens - I think he commands considerable influence with armed militias anyhoo. But there's ambiguity on one major point - who's responsible for this final "thrust"? The AFP explicitly states that Ouattara's forces captured him while the BBC says French tanks led the way.
That's one less thing to worry about.
And people complain that the UN doesn't do shit.
Who's he?
Looks like Gbagbo got gbagged
I love his expression. It's like a sad puppy.
I hope he'll be treated well, I wouldn't like to be in his situation.

President of Ivory Coast [editline]11th April 2011[/editline]
How do you pronounce that? I'm guessing the G is silent.
Yep, Bagbo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gbagbo fyi he's allegedly a war criminal
his main crime is that he made the ivory coast suck and since (iirc) france has a vested interest in the ivory coast, they went in and dealt with it by arresting him and caring about his war crimes
What a shitty president.
