According to the official statement on AT&T's website, the FCC and the DOJ got in the way of a deal—and it's going to be bad for you, the customer, in the end: The actions by the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice to block this transaction do not change the realities of the U.S. wireless industry. It is one of the most fiercely competitive industries in the world, with a mounting need for more spectrum that has not diminished and must be addressed immediately. The AT&T and T-Mobile USA combination would have offered an interim solution to this spectrum shortage. In the absence of such steps, customers will be harmed and needed investment will be stifled. AT&T will still have to pay T-Mobile a $4 billion break up fee for pulling out of the deal. Additionally, AT&T will enter a mutually beneficial roaming agreement with Deutsche Telekom. The T-Mobile purchase would have made AT&T the largest carrier in the United States—giving the company control over 100 million customers. It's closest competitor would have been Verizon Wireless with 94 million customers. The deal was opposed almost instantaneously by government regulators. In late August, the the DOJ filed anti-trust paperwork against T-Mobile saying that "AT&T's elimination of T-Mobile as an independent, low- priced rival would remove a significant competitive force from the market." AT&T of course is not too happy about the meddling feds. The company says that customers are getting the short end of the stick because the "highly-competitive" wireless carrier market needs improvements that can only be brought about if it is allowed to eat T-Mobile alive. [AT&T]
Oh MY GOD YES
4 billion dollar breakup fee? Jesus.
4 billion dollar breakup fee? Jesus.
solution: don't attempt to form monopolies
Good.
This is good, but it would have extended their coverage probably. Last I heard, AT&T barely covered anything.

Holy shit, for once the people actually stopped a massive corporate power grab. Too bad SOPA's gonna pass in a few days...
Too bad SOPA's gonna pass in a few days...
No no fucking no don't say that. unless jinxes actually exist so yes say that a lot if they do
A good start to my Monday. Tmobile only covers my city.
I don't understand the author's position. They say that they need a greater spectrum, which I think is supposed to mean the industry needs more competitors (which it does). At they same time, they're saying that AT&T buying out one of their competitors would fix that?
They used to be monopoly and were broken down, and now they were trying to be one again and stopped yet again
I need to tell my parents to switch from AT&T to anything else. Right now the bills from them are atrocious. Fucking $500 dollars for ~500 mb of internet usage a month. Add that to the fact that the coverage is shit also.
They said they needed improvements. What improvements? Would the improvements be more shittier coverage and higher cost? While I have t-mobile, they don't have much coverage as well(my phone has no signal at all).
I don't care what anyone else says this is upsetting news for me. I have two T-Mobile lines and was hoping to be able to move them over to AT&T Employee lines once this went through. Plus this would have brought in a lot of extra business to where I work since we no longer sell T-Mobile.

May someone please explain why AT&T has gotten such a bad rep around here?
May someone please explain why AT&T has gotten such a bad rep around here?
Exclusivity for iPhone when it was released(got bad rep thanks to bullshit), shit reception(debatable), buying other companies because they are behind(AT&T being behind), lying about shit(mostly every company), being last in customer satisfaction, data caps(comcast had it as well), and the attempted T-mobile buyout. They are like Apple for the carriers for wireless, wait, there are almost 0 fans for AT&T.
