I still pin the blame on Sony and their damn marketing team more than anything else

Agreed, if Hello Games worked in secrecy and brought the game to the light of day within a year of shipping (with or without Sony's help) they'd be much better off.
Big publishers just hype the fuck out of games and marketing never realizes that overexposure can and usually is a bad thing.
It's much less about hype and more the fact that the developers just did not communicate a lot of vital information in concrete terms.
They still haven't definitively answered if there is multiplayer in any capacity.
I wish Facepunch Studios could've published it.
As long as garry didn't force the name to be changed to "Get Fuckin Lost" or something.

"get lost" would be a great name for an exploration game.

Blame geoff keighley for that. he visited their office and managed to see a glimpse of the game (they didn't want to show it to him), and convinced them to put up the reveal trailer at VGX.
I feel like even mentioning the tiny amount of idiots who send death threats and similar stalking/harrassment just makes it worse. How many people wouldnt even consider harrassing a game dev before hearing over and over how many people do it and get away with it, and its only a tiny amount of people doing it either way. Its like mass media reporting on serial killers, it creates copycats, the best course of action is to ignore them and, surprise, not feed trolls
Never knew shit was being sent in Sean Murray's direction, that just makes me pity this whole situation even more.

I keep seeing this but I don't really understand it. It seems like marketing people have one job and the massive hype means they did it well. It's so hyped that even if people are disappointed, it'll probably be very profitable. I think that means more to Sony than being better-received with a smaller, niche audience.

It was going to be canceled if he didn't
I blame overhyping
It was going to be canceled if he didn't
That's a good point actually.
You know, I think the ratio of bitching about No Man's Sky's hype overshadows the actual hype itself by a ratio of like fucking 10:1 jesus christ lol

Without Sony, this game would have never happened.
Their studio was flooded in 2013 and most of the studio was destroyed.
They were about to cancel the game but Sony helped them get back on it and supported them.

Even before Sony they were hyping it up to be the biggest game ever and stuff iirc

Then they are dumbasses. :v:
I pin the blame on Sony's marketing team but I also pin the blame on the "gaming community" at large for continuously preordering and blindly purchasing games from known bad actors while in the same breath talking shit against Valve for having a free for all marketplace.
Wow you can program a video game? That's a very unique skill that not many people have, because you have Sony throwing you money you should totally be given all this special coverage so you can hype up your mediocre game!
Its especially evident than in the VR section of Steam that games that are shit are not moving as well as titles that are actually reviewed well. Its pretty similar to the mobile marketplaces around. This game should've been buried by the noise of other shitty titles.

Sean Murray did hype up the game himself though. He has made statements that turned out to be false, the big one being multiplayer.
He talked about the game in a vague way, to generate the buzz, that´s his own choice. Having some media report on it as a survival game does not mean that all the previously generated buzz becomes invalid. When you look at all the hype, at its core the fans still see it as a exploration-survival game, just a lot of extra fluff.
Hello Games did let the hype go rampant, they were partly responsible for that themselves and although in game development day one patches are common, they set up consumers for disappointment and frustration.
I feel like this video glosses over the expectations from consumers. Why should they be the ones that know the intricacies of game development and marketing, they are supposed to get good, honest information about the product.
Instead of creating understanding of the trials and tribulations developers have to go through, why not change the system works? It is obviously overworked and rushed a lot of the times.

Hello Games' first title, Joe Danger, was published exclusively with SCE.
I'd say Sony has had their foot in the door the entire time and Sony's goal isn't to make good content.
So whether they caught onto the Sony marketing train from their first title or Sony pushed them with this title it doesn't really matter.
By having been SCE/SIE exclusive or backed at any time that brings them into doubt for anyone who is the least bit discerning.

pretty good marketing team though

'a literal galaxy with endless gameplay'
'a literal galaxy with endless gameplay'
Well, I mean, Minecraft has "endless" gameplay. The playable area of Minecraft is so massive no player could ever see everything in even one single world seed at unmodded travel speeds.
The gameplay that you will have will be repetitive as fuck, but it's "endless".
This is what happens when you let Sony use your game to promote their console - they are incentivized to try and get as many sales from as broad a consumer range as possible, even though it's in Hello Games' best interest to market the game as an indie game with a niche appeal. Take a guess which side wins when the contract's inked.
For most of a year, you couldn't even find evidence that NMS was being released on PC if the only thing you looked at was Sony's marketing. They pushed it as a fake exclusive and hyped it up. And then did nothing to correct the consumer public when they took the hype and fucktupled it, because more sales.
I hope we get a post-mortem on this shit in like six months. I feel that NMS fans are owed it.

Statement was made before the flood.
Okay, so it's not an example of my point. That's fair.
I still stand by what I said about Sony from the overall handling of things.
