Net neutrality is dead — at least for now. In a 3-2 vote today, the Federal Communications Commission approved a measure to remove the tough net neutrality rules it put in place just two years ago. Those rules prevented internet providers from blocking and throttling traffic and offering paid fast lanes. They also classified internet providers as Title II common carriers in order to give the measure strong legal backing.
Today’s vote undoes all of that. It removes the Title II designation, preventing the FCC from putting tough net neutrality rules in place even if it wanted to. And, it turns out, the Republicans now in charge of the FCC really don’t want to. The new rules largely don’t prevent internet providers from doing anything. They can block, throttle, and prioritize content if they wish to. The only real rule is that they have to publicly state that they’re going to do it.
Opponents of net neutrality argue that the rules were never needed in the first place, because the internet has been doing just fine. “The internet wasn't broken in 2015. We were not living in some digital dystopia,” commission chairman Ajit Pai said today. “The main problem consumers have with the internet is not and has never been that their internet provider is blocking access to content. It's been that they don't have access at all.”
While that may broadly be true, it’s false to say that all of the harms these rules were preventing are imagined: even with the rules in place, we saw companies block their customers from accessing competing apps, and we saw companies implement policies that clearly advantage some internet services over others. Without any rules in place, they’ll have free rein to do that to an even greater extent.
RIP
It's unlikely to survive the night though, federal judges will likely vote to have it reviewed due to the tampering evidence.

Land of the free, ladies and gents.
Ajit Pai is a fukin weapon
Land of the free*, ladies and gents.
*-If you got money.
Shit Pie needs to crawl back into whatever hell hole he came out of and die there for the benefit of mankind. Fuck this.
The only way to get it back is to get a Democratic majority on the FCC. The only way to do that is to elect a Democratic Congress in 2018 and a Democratic President in 2020. That government should also be pressured to amend the Telecommunications Act to enshrine net neutrality in law, rather than it being a policy decision at the FCC.
this is sad
so great to hear my already reasonably priced internet connection in my regional monopoly is going to improve wow what a landmark decision
Trump, moore, and pai are like the triumvirate of american conservatives. moore for the radical religiousness, pai for the corporate shilling, and trump at the top for the sleaze, obsession with Obama, and shady deals/
help from russia for power.
edit: thankfully moore lost the election.
Here are the dissents from the two Democrats on the FCC
https://www.theverge.com/2017/12/14/16776712/fcc-commissioners-democrat-statements-net-neutrality
I dissent. I dissent from this fiercely-spun, legally-lightweight, consumer-harming, corporate-enabling Destroying Internet Freedom Order.
I dissent, because I am among the millions who is outraged. Outraged, because the FCC pulls its own teeth, abdicating responsibility to protect the nation’s broadband consumers. Why are we witnessing such an unprecedented groundswell of public support, for keeping the 2015 net neutrality protections in place? Because the public can plainly see, that a soon-to-be-toothless FCC, is handing the keys to the Internet – the Internet, one of the most remarkable, empowering, enabling inventions of our lifetime – over to a handful of multi-billion dollar corporations. And if past is prologue, those very same broadband internet service providers, that the majority says you should trust to do right by you, will put profits and shareholder returns above, what is best for you.

Net neutrality is internet freedom. I support that freedom. I dissent from this rash decision to roll back net neutrality rules. I dissent from the corrupt process that has brought us to this point. And I dissent from the contempt this agency has shown our citizens in pursuing this path today. This decision puts the Federal Communications Commission on the wrong side of history, the wrong side of the law, and the wrong side of the American public.
The future of the internet is the future of everything. That is because there is nothing in our commercial, social, and civic lives that has been untouched by its influence or unmoved byits power. And here in the United States our internet economy is the envy of the world. This is because it rests on a foundation of openness.

Or it's going to make its way through the courts system, where it'll be found to be a utility, and therefore the FCC will never get a say in it again, at all, ever.
Which would be a pretty fine alternative in my book.
That seems like a really long shot, I think the courts are much more likely to determine that that's a political decision best left to the legislative/executive branches. As recently as 2014 the courts have examined and struck down previous, weaker net neutrality regulations
Wow. I really didnt think it would happen.
Could Shit Pie go to jail for obstruction of justice for the whole spam anti-NN comments fraud? I hope so.
This isn't over yet, this is almost guaranteed to be taken to court which would likely result in the order being halted during that time.
Not to mention, Congress could possibly take action against this especially now with Republicans criticizing the FCC and Doug Jones being elected.
people have revolted over less
Land of the free, ladies and gents.
Free to get fucked in the ass by people with more money than everyone in your town together will earn in an entire lifetime.
people have revolted over less
yeah, but we're now in a time where complacency is the more popular of the two because revolt would require the people actually knowing what to do once they took over
I refuse to accept this.
I don't know much about how legal stuff works, but it still has to go to court right?
people have revolted over less
Wasn't the whole point of the second amendment to be able to fight back against government tyranny?
The worst part is how Ajit couldn't even act like an adult. Asshole kept cracking jokes. He could've at least tried to act professional, but instead we just stare at those fucking donkey teeth of his.
This truly is, the darkest timeline.
In all seriousness, I hope the courts can undo this mess. There’s gotta be a way to stop this, right?
I don't know much about how legal stuff works, but it still has to go to court right?
The courts'll shoot it down, they have too. Way too much shit stacked against Pai's tactics.
I don't feel so good
If this isnt fixed by the next administration I might off myself.
Comcast is my provider and I already have to pay a bullshit broadcast tv fee.
Fuck me
Wasn't the whole point of the second amendment to be able to fight back against government tyranny?
armed resistance movements in the modern world versus the technical capabilities of the american military are basically hopeless unless you can fire up millions of people at once
Are you asking for an armed insurrection against the government? Cause that's exactly what it sounds like what you're asking for.
Are you saying that the last year isn't a good enough reason?
