One state lawmaker is proposing a new bill aimed at fighting cyberbullying.
State Senator Glenn Anderson (D-Westland) introduced Senate Bill 74.
It would require schools to update their current anti-bullying policies to include cyberbullying. Under the bill, schools could come up with their own standards, but they must submit any changes to their policies to the state Department of Education.
The bill would also require districts to report incidents of bullying to the Department of Education.
Schools would also need to assure those who report bullying that they could remain anonymous.

The bill is so vague it isn't funny.
Nothing I hate more than laws or rules with vague standards and no objectivity to it.
Whatever happened to blocking someone who's harassing you and that being the end of it?
so basically you just change your school handbooks to say "BULLYING/CYBERBULLYING" instead of just "BULLYING"
that's pretty okay I guess

Actually, students are required by this law to tell their school when they do get bullied, and then the school is suppose to tell the Board of Education for the state of Michigan.
Why the State want that info if they are not going to do anything with it seems really fishy to me.
Seriously, what is with you people being against really simple shit aimed to stop harassment online.
You all have your life revolving around the internet, what if someone basically became determined to harass you AT EVERY PLACE you hung out at?

What could possibly go wrong??
examples of cyberbullying include:
hurting another student through the internet
"I said I couldn't wait for GTA V and Billy said he wasn't gonna get it and it made me feel bad :((("
-Billy gets 3 days ISS-
"I posted about how gays are immoral and Susan said she didn't agree with me."
-susan gets suspended-

Statistics, studies. Maybe they need numbers first before they should enact something?
Ooooh Nooo, they're asking if you get bullied! BIG BROTHER.

I don't see how reporting incidents like "Jimmy called me a fag on the internet" to the state government is going to prevent cyberbullying
I don't see how reporting incidents like "Jimmy called me a fag on the internet" to the state government is going to prevent cyberbullying
I don't see how getting reports and numbers hurts either.
I don't see how getting reports and numbers hurts either.
What is the government supposed to do about bullying
It's a parents responsibility to raise their child to not be a little shit in school
Anti-bullying measures are reactionary only, telling schools to report incidences of cyberbullying does not solve the problem, and "oh it doesn't hurt anything" is a shitty excuse for massive overhead. I'm sure the DoE needs to worry about cyberbullying statistics and not funding schools and important shit like that.
Parents aren't doing their job, or have you not noticed that yet? They can't really do parenting anyway because they have to work long hours just to get food and heat for their kids.
And you can take proactive steps to prevent harassment and bullying but you have to start young and keep it going to high school.

The government shouldn't be a foster parent.
The government shouldn't be a foster parent.
The public's not going to do it.
The public's not going to do it.
And just because there's possibly going to be a bill passed, you think the government's going to do it? And they're going to be doing a good job? Haha.
Also, I like how you implied every parent is overworked and has exactly zero time to spend with their kids. (A lot of parents don't even know their kids are school bullies!)
"lol y dnt those lil fags just grow up and stop being hurt by bullies"
I don't see anything wrong with this
in a weird way wont this make like, 5 jobs for people who will have to sit and read all of the bullshit claims and decide which ones are good to make actions on?
"lol y dnt those lil fags just grow up and stop being hurt by bullies"
trying to use a hammer to do a fingers job however doesn't work ever

They'd do a good job if you got off your asses and actually bothered your own congressman or even worse, voted for someone else.
I'd rather the government take steps to make schooling less volatile and hateful which leads to years of negative health effects then sit back and do nothing while the public sits back and does nothing while the parents work their ass off and can't do anything. Or even worse, basically share that idea that 'kids will be kids'.

Why does it have to be the government's job. Why do I have to go cry to my congressman when I can just go the the schools themselves and, I don't know, start an anti-bullying campaign, make a speech to kids, have support groups for kids affected by bullying.
It's not the government's job. It's your fucking job. And with how bureaucratic our government is, it would take years for anything worthwhile to happen.

oh really because i was under the assumption that schools were funded and run by the government sorry i must have been mistaken

Going to your fucking school, that's public property, that's run by the local state government. IS GOING TO THE GOVERNMENT.
Its your fucking job too.

I wonder where the government gets its money. It's almost like we live in a taxpayer-funded society!

So why do I have to cry to my congressman again? Is that your pitiful idea of helping the kids?
Seriously, what is with you people being against really simple shit aimed to stop harassment online.

1: It isn't actually going to do a goddamn thing to stop online harassment
2: It's needlessly invasive
3: It's so vaguely worded that not even the person who wrote the fucking bill understands what it actually does
4: It's a waste of taxpayer money
5: It's a waste of state senate time
I wonder where the government gets its money. It's almost like we live in a taxpayer-funded society!
obviously that means we should stop petitioning our government to use the money we give them to run government programs in a way that benefits our children!

I meant just in general, you bare similar arguments of people who don't actually get involved in their government and then get all pissed when it does something you don't agree with.
Right because I totally trust the government with this, especially based on the way some states handle sex ed.
obviously that means we should stop petitioning our government to use the money we give them to run government programs in a way that benefits our children!
Petitioning the government to fix the bullying problem is washing your hands of the issue and telling the government to do something about it.
Why can't you have direct involvement with the schools again?

You don't have to be involved with the government to be disappointed with them.
What's the last involvement you had with your government, pray tell? Did you send an angry email to your senator that got canned by one of their temps?
