Google released its diversity data in a blog post Wednesday that revealed 70 percent of the company’s global workforce is male, and its US workforce is less than 2 percent black and 3 percent Hispanic. Though Silicon Valley’s highly concentrated pool of tech companies, start-ups, accelerators, and investors is notoriously white- and male-dominated, this is the first time that a major tech company has publicly addressed the issue. This move comes in response to a growing number of women speaking out against issues of harassment and misogyny in the tech sector, and a push by Jesse Jackson Sr. to draw attention to Google and other tech companies’ glaring lack of diversity.
30% women actually seems pretty high for a technology firm haha. Although it should be higher.
Is there a break-down of the ratios in different departments? It might provide a completely different perspective.
Does it matter? Answer: NO.

Actually, there is. In tech departments, 17% are female. In leadership, 21% are female. Obviously room for improvement there. Not surprising that 48% of staff are female in non-tech departments.
So long as they hired qualified people (and don't turn away people who are qualified for racial/gender reasons), who cares?
Also I went out to Google HQ awhile ago and saw more racial diversity than this. It probably depends on the office.
edit:
Also I notice there's no White Googler's network...
...so? I mean, as long as they are providing equal opportunities, I really don't think it matters. So what what if it's not an even male/female split and the races aren't perfectly divided? The idea of there NEEDING to be equal numbers of men/women/white people/black people/whatever is dumb, and gives way to dumb things like "colored people quotas."
So long as there is nothing to suggest that, proportionally, Google or any other company aren't turning down more women or other minorities in the field, the problem doesn't have anything to do with Google. What this disparity is more indicative of is a difference in the education available to these minorities, societal expectations, etc. Unless, of course, Google is actually turning down people because they're a minority in the work force. Then shame on them. But I doubt that's the case.
who cares?
Race baiters like Jesse Jackson and Eric Holder.
Who cares?
Does someone out there think that employing more black people or more white people will somehow make a company better? What's going through the minds of the people who try to make an issue out of these things is beyond me.
Google hires high quality and nothing else.
not their fault if high quality is more male than female
females that want to get into google, get gud and you will. Prove your worth hiring like everyone else does.
in my adventures of google
engineering is mainly male
PR/marketing departments is a much closer to 50/50 split
I think it's very easy for people on facepunch which is concentrated on one specific demographic to wonder why this is important but for people who feel like places like Google aren't for them this is an excellent thing to be pushing for and certainly for me I think that seeing more women get involved with this incredibly important developing field is a hopeful event and ok you can go back to saying who cares now just wanted to put it out there.
Umm wat people should get involved in what they want I be involve in and not something just because there isn't a lot of people of their race or gender there

You should try an exercise in alternate perspectives and understand that not everyone is raised believing that they can do anything and everything they want to do.
I like how people here are saying our implying diversity doesn't matter when Google is explicitly doing stuff to increase diversity.
Its sexist until its a 50/50 split between men and women guys.
Remember that Microsoft ad that got (poorly) whitewashed in the Polish version?
Its sexist until its a 50/50 split between men and women guys.
not implying anything at all by this
but then do you consider nursing sexist

classic Poland

indeed, clearly facepunchers are right, and google is wrong. :suicide:

If its women outnumbering men its liberation.
Too bad there isn't a mechanism to allow Google to find a more diverse group of employees, a 'search' function if you will.
I think the problem has more to do with women not going in high tech fields and those that do are met with sexism and misogyny.
But the ones that do make it all the way through due to their hard work and perserverance will make it to the promise land of never being fired due to gender quotas
Umm wat people should get involved in what they want I be involve in and not something just because there isn't a lot of people of their race or gender there
One of the problems is that sexism is still very prevalent in the tech industry today, and that can put-off potential female applicants. I'm pretty sure that there are heaps of women who want to be involved in tech, but they feel that they might be subject to discrimination based on something they cannot control.
On a different matter, Is English not your first language? That sentence was awfully difficult to read.
How about you just hired people based on their credentials and merits and don't even ask them to tell you their gender or race? How about just assign them an applicant number and don't even look at their name to be even more fair.

You can't just give people an applicant number when you're hiring them. Do you expect the interview to be completely non-face to face?
Google has one of the most intensive hiring processes as far as I'm aware, the interviewers might have subconscious biases.

You don't think Google conducts interviews before hiring like any other company?

So it's a catch-22. Women in tech are ""threatened"" because the industry is mainly male, but it's mainly male because women feel threatened

Either that or they're naturally less inclined toward technology and engineering work.
It's impossible to assess.
why are people posting this shit?
why are people posting this shit?
Because the lack of diversity in tech workplaces is actually a problem? Hard to see if you're a white male.
