The forward-deployed cruiser Antietam ran aground Tuesday off the coast of Japan near its home port of Yokosuka, according to two Navy officials familiar with the incident.
The ship grounded after anchoring out in high winds, officials said. When the crew noticed the ship was dragging its anchor, Antietam got back underway. Shortly after, the crew felt the ship shudder and lose all pitch control in both propellers. The grounding caused the ship to dump about 1,100 gallons of oil into the water. Nobody was injured in the incident.

Looks like the CO, XO, CMC and NAV will have the pleasure of looking for new jobs.
The ticonderogas are getting pretty old, aren't they?

I predict summary executions before the end of the week.
How do members of the US navy fuck up that badly?

It is human to make mistakes.
1100 gallons isn't that bad, right?
right?
also fun fact: a barrel of crude oil contains around 42 gallons
(not that crude oil was spilled here)

It's not an Exxon tanker leaking, but any oil into the ocean really isn't a good thing.

They're navy personnel on a ship.
If there is ever one job you expect them to do, it's to not run aground.
Well yeah it's a "Guided Missile" Cruiser not a "Guided" Missile Crusier
In any case, it wasn't guided very well.

I know someone who works on that ship. It was probably that they're not doing maintenance properly.
...but definitely the CO, XO, NAV (Maybe the CMC will get the boot but I doubt it) will get fired/relieved not because of the oil, it's because they got the ship aground. Aground ship is super dangerous, as it can destroy their sonar domes for example, which is ridiculous expensive, and will put the shit in dry dock for a good time.
Sounds like they had a lot of issues with guiding the ship away from the coast just because of the wind. Must have been quite a breeze.
The leak was much much less than anything coming from a pipeline, so it doesn't seem like the primary issue here.
For invading countries and stealing their oil US sure does a lot of dumping of it.

It doesn't take much wind to push a ship around. Especially one that's as aerodynamic as a brick. Not a ship driver but I think it's something Pilots gotta consider when coming into port because a large ship will pick up wind like a sail and that's not good when navigating tight spaces.
