But this week, Alvarenga’s heartwarming story – which has been turned into a book, “438 Days,” by the English journalist, Jonathan Franklin – took a grisly turn. Relatives of the man who he was shipwrecked with, Ezequiel Córdova Ríos, and who reportedly starved to death months into the ordeal, have filed a million-dollar lawsuit against Alvarenga alleging that he cannibalized his shipmate to stay alive, according to the Salvadoran paper, El Diario de Hoy.
There is literally no way to prove or deny this. I don't think anyone should be profiting off of it.
Even if that did happen, who could honestly blame the guy?
What was he supposed to do? Let the body rot on the ship and become even more insane than just talking to his dead friend for 6 days? And since it's already been said, there is no evidence at all that he committed cannibalism. It's just a cash grab now.
If he was anything like that family then good on him for eating the dude
Even if that did happen, who could honestly blame the guy?
There should be protection measures enacted in the first place to prevent something like this from even being legally brought up (and maybe there are somewhere, I don't know). Even if it was true, it was a survival situation, so that would justify it. It's not like he killed this guy intentionally to eat him; what's being postulated here is that the shipmate died, and then Alvarenga ate him. Not a big deal at all given the circumstances.
What a shit show. Something with no evidence. This needs to get thrown out. Then a million dollar lawsuit for replacing attorneys on top of it? Someone's going to profit, and it's not the families or anyone.. it's the lawyers.
"Cannibalism Suit" sounds metal as fuck
