only moments later - an underwater explosive detonated following this picture. if only they had calibrated their lobster radar to full smell... the lobster perished

Researchers at the University of Florida say a lobster's sense of smell could one day help protect soldiers from landmines and other explosives.
UF researchers have discovered that a type of olfactory neuron in lobsters constantly discharges small bursts of electronic pulses that may help them find an odor's location when they search for food or try to avoid danger.

Now the researchers say that ability, which they call "lobster radar" could help them develop improved electronic "noses" to detect explosives.
"An electronic nose has to recognize an odor and locate its source. Finding the source has often been the job of the person handling the electronic nose," said Barry W. Ache, director of the Center for Smell and Taste in UF’s Evelyn F. and William L. McKnight Brain Institute.
The "lobster radar" can pinpoint a smell the same way a human can hear a train moving left to right. The finding by UF's researchers could also help scientists better understand the sense of smell in all animals, including humans.
"The involvement of bursting sensory neurons in olfactory processing is not unique to the lobster,” Yuriy Bobkov, of the UF Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience, said in a statement. "It’s likely to be a fundamental aspect of olfaction."
If this actually ends up working out how they anticipated that's fucking awesome.

soon you will see this in the deadly reality of war; only the men who have lobster radars survive
For once I'm proud of living in Florida

So, are they going to be carrying lobsters in aquariums across the desert now?
They must look so out of place out there.
Two natives see them go by carrying the aquarium over their head and one of them says:
"Well, i guess they want it fresh.."
So basically a lobster smells in stereo?

Florida finally does something noteworthy that doesn't involve meth or public indecency, and now the world is going to end.
Hurray!

Actually in history people from Florida have done quite a bit.
I guess the TSA will be wanding me with lobsters now.

I hope for their sakes they bind their pincers unless they want a lawsuit.

Politicians get the pincers
As a Floridian, I feel like this will end up having to do something about meth.

I'm imagining customs officers walking through airports dragging lobsters on a leash and the mental image is hilarious.

I respect a guy who wears a life vest when out on the water. He may look like a goober, but if there's an accident and they wind up overboard, he's not going to drown but that lobster who is too cool to wear a vest sure will.

Or pain pills. You know South Florida (specifically my county) has the highest prescription drug addiction in the world, right? Why go to international druglords when you can just try to cheat the system for more meth from hospitals themselves :v:
