WASHINGTON — In the weeks after he became the Republican nominee on July 19, 2016, Donald Trump was warned that foreign adversaries, including Russia, would probably try to spy on and infiltrate his campaign, according to multiple government officials familiar with the matter.
The warning came in the form of a high-level counterintelligence briefing by senior FBI officials, the officials said. A similar briefing was given to Hillary Clinton, they added. They said the briefings, which are commonly provided to presidential nominees, were designed to educate the candidates and their top aides about potential threats from foreign spies.
The candidates were urged to alert the FBI about any suspicious overtures to their campaigns, the officials said.

This sounds totally and completely normal really
"That the Republican and Democrat nominee for president received a standardized briefing on counterintelligence is hardly a news story," said Raj Shah, a White House spokesman. "That NBC News hears about the contents of this classified conversation due to an inappropriate leak is a news story."
This is a little meta

True, but given the correspondence between Russians and people in his campaign, it's noteworthy that they welcomed the behavior they were told to report to the FBI.

That is true enough at least, its like, they were told to do this, if they didn't do it, while doing the opposite, that might indicate a big problem
Though all of this will only make sense after all of the story unfolds
Frank Figliuzzi, a former head of FBI counterintelligence and an NBC News analyst, said counterintelligence briefings "provide an opportunity for investigative subjects to be transparent with the bureau and to come back if such contacts are occurring because of admonishments by the bureau."
If they fail to do that, he said, "a couple of factors could be at play: They didn't spread the message to the rest of the team or there is some form of guilty conscience that prohibits them."
Oh well theres their problem, trump doesn't do breifings thst are filled with words and not-Trump, clearly this is the FBI's failing for not using at least a powerpoint, a sketch artist, and a puppet show.
This kinda makes me wonder:
Maybe Trump actually wasn't working with the Russians at first, until he secured the support of the GOP and became their nominee. The FBI warned him of possible foreign interference, and only when he saw just how disliked he was amongst the majority of the American population (compared to Clinton, anyhow), is when he might've started accepting said foreign interference. Collaborating with Russian aid, in order to secure a victory within the election, by any means necessary.
Just a theory, though.

Ah, getting back to the White House Classics. "You wouldn't have heard about this if it wasn't for the leakers! They're the real threat here!"

On the other hand Trump had been doing business in Russia for years by this point and was desperately trying to get Trump Tower Moscow built. He was in contact, directly and by proxy, with representatives of Putin and other oligarchs for business reasons.
Woooow who's surprised these connections became political inroads for Russia screwing with the federal election?

Nope. Trump had the infamous June 9th hotel meeting with several Russian govt contacts in 2016, a month prior to the FBI warning.
